ISSN 0973-8916 (Print), 2230-7303 (Online)1126Statistical analysisThe antibody titres to C. abortus at two occasionsof oestrus synchronization (day 0 and 13-dayslater) were compared by paired t test.ResultsDetection of chlamydiae: At various occasionsof oestrus synchronization (Day 0 and 13-dayslater) C. abortus was not isolated or specificantigen was detected in the vaginal and faecalsamples collected on the day of progesteronesponge insertion (Day 0) or on the day of spongeremoval (day 13).Detection of chlamydial LPS: Chlamydia–specific LPS were not detected by the Clearviewtest in the samples collected before insertion orin those obtained after sponge removal and PMSGinjection. Samples continued to be negative afterthe third passage on McCoy cell tissue culture.PCR results using MOMP specific primers werealso negative.Systematic antibody response: ChlamydiaspecificIgG antibodies were detected in the seratested by ELISA. The mean IgG antibody titreof the serum samples obtained from the ewes onthe day of sponge insertion was 2.05 (log 10), andthose obtained after the removal of the spongewas 2.93 log 10(Table 1). The rise in antibodytitre following treatment with progesterone wasstatistically significant (p
