Byl pronásledován StB, v září 1979 byl zatčen a odsouzen za výrobu a šířenísamizdatových publikací na dva a půl roku. Z vězení se vrátil v březnu 1981 a podepsal Chartu 77.Záhy byl opět zatčen a odsouzen za pobuřování k pětadvaceti měsícům. Na svobodu se dostal v říjnu1984. Věznění mělo vliv na jeho zdravotní stav – v roce 1988 předčasně zemřel.V letech 1978–1989 řídil samizdatovou knižní edici Popelnice, v níž vyšlo asi 130 titulů.Byl signatářem Charty 77 a nežádoucí, potlačované a komunisty zakázané literatuře věnoval vlastněcelý život. V letech 1980–1984 byl kvůli samizdatu (ofi ciálně pro podvracení republiky) vězněn,mimo jiné v severočeských Minkovicích, v jednom z nejhorších kriminálů té doby.Jaromír Šavrda could not make a living as a writer or a teacher during the “normalisation” periodthat followed the Soviet occupation of our country. He therefore worked as a store man anddevoted himself to samizdat. He was arrested in September 1979, and he was convicted aftera year in detention to two and a half years imprisonment for distributing and producing samizdatpublications. He signed Charter 77 in 1981 after getting out of prison. He was soon convicted againand sentenced to 25 months in jail for sedition. Prison life took its toll on his health and he diedbefore his time in 1988.In the years 1978–1989, Jiří Gruntorád managed Popelnice (“Dustbin”) a samizdat series ofpublications, which issued around 130 titles. He was a signatory of Charter 77 who has devotedpractically his entire life to literature that was considered objectionable and which was suppressedand banned by the communists. Because of his samizdat activity (the offi cial reason was forsubverting the state) Gruntorád was imprisoned between 1980 and 1984, including in Minkoviceprison in north Bohemia, which was one of the worst jails of that period.90 | 91
