PETR CIBULKA* 1950, BrnoVÁCLAV BENDA* 1946, PrahaVystudoval stavební průmyslovou školu, ale pracoval převážně v dělnických zaměstnáních.Kvůli opozičním aktivitám – byl členem Jazzové sekce a signatářem Charty 77 – ho soustavněpronásledovala StB. Vydával samizdatovou edici Půjčuj, rozmnožuj, rozšiřuj. V letech 1978–1989strávil celkem pět let za mřížemi a proslul hladovkami, kterými protestoval proti vězeňské šikaně.Katolický intelektuál, jeden z hlavních představitelů protikomunistické opozice v sedmdesátýcha osmdesátých letech. Byl signatář a v letech 1979 a 1984 i mluvčí Charty 77, patřil k zakládajícímčlenům Výboru na obranu nespravedlivě stíhaných. Od května 1979 byl ve vězení za podvracenírepubliky, na svobodu vyšel roku 1983. V 80. letech vydával a redigoval samizdatový fi lozofi ckýčasopis PARAF.Petr Cibulka studied at an industrial college for construction studies, but he primarily worked inlabouring jobs. He was systematically persecuted by the communist secret police because of hisopposition activities. He was a member of the underground Jazzová sekce (“Jazz Section”) anda signatory of Charter 77. He produced the samizdat publication Půjčuj, rozmnožuj, rozšiřuj (“Lend!Copy! Distribute!”). During the period 1978–1989, he spent a total of five years behind bars and hebecame famous for his hunger strikes, which he employed to complain about maltreatment in prison.As a Catholic intellectual, Václav Benda was one of the main representatives of the anti-communistopposition in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a signatory of Charter 77 and a spokesman for theCharter movement between 1979 and 1984. He was also one of the founding members of theCommittee for the Defence of the Unjustly Persecuted. He was put in jail for subversion of thestate from May 1979 until his release in 1983. In the 1980s, he published and edited the samizdatphilosophy magazine PARAF.88 | 89
