Van der BaanEmail:Mirko.vanderBaan@ualberta.caOffice: CCIS 3-090Office hours: MW 4:00-5.30pm.It is strongly recommended to contact me by email to confirman appointment.TAs:Amna Feroz and Yoones VaeziEmail:aferoz@ualberta.ca and yvaezi@ualberta.caTA Office: CCIS 3-099TA <strong>of</strong>fice hours: By appointmentClass time: RF14:30-15:50Place: Tory, Room 2-87Website: eClassObjective:On completion <strong>of</strong> this module, the student will be able to understand theprinciples and practice <strong>of</strong> interpreting seismic reflection data.Syllabus:This introduction to seismic interpretation will cover the following topics:Overview <strong>of</strong> reflection seismology; limits to seismic reflection pr<strong>of</strong>iling; pitfalls inseismic interpretation; petroleum systems; seismic-to-well ties and seismicphase; structural and stratigraphic interpretation; carbonate reefs and salt; directhydrocarbon indicators and impedance inversions; amplitude variations with<strong>of</strong>fset; and use <strong>of</strong> seismic attributes to assist geologic interpretations.Course Prerequisites:Obligatory for <strong>IPG</strong> students; for non-<strong>IPG</strong> students: consent <strong>of</strong> courseinstructor is required. It is important to prepare yourself for this course througha review <strong>of</strong> the prerequisite material. Students who do not have the requiredprerequisites at the time <strong>of</strong> taking this course should not expect supplementarypr<strong>of</strong>essorial tutoring from the instructor.

This overall mark is then used to assign course grades.Grade boundaries will be decided based on a combination <strong>of</strong> historical studentperformances and the instructor’s expectations and judgment. Where possiblenatural grade boundaries will be used. Misrepresentation <strong>of</strong> Facts to gain a deferral is a seriousbreach <strong>of</strong> the Code <strong>of</strong> Student Behaviour.Deferred Final Examination:A student who cannot write the final examination due to incapacitating illness,severe domestic affliction or other compelling reasons can apply for a deferredfinal examination. Such an application must be made to the student’s Faculty<strong>of</strong>fice within 48 hours <strong>of</strong> the missed examination and must be supported by aStatutory Declaration (in lieu <strong>of</strong> a medical statement form) or other appropriatedocumentation (Calendar section 23.5.6). Deferred examinations are a privilegeand not a right; there is no guarantee that a deferred examination will be granted.Misrepresentation <strong>of</strong> Facts to gain a deferred examination is a serious breach <strong>of</strong>the Code <strong>of</strong> Student Behaviour.Deferred exams will be held on Saturday January 26, 2013 9:00 a.m. in CCIS L1-140.Reexamination:A student who writes the final examination and fails the course may apply for areexamination. Reexaminations are rarely granted in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Science.These exams are governed by <strong>University</strong> (Calendar section 23.5.5) and Faculty<strong>of</strong> Science Regulations (Calendar section 182.5.9). Misrepresentation <strong>of</strong> Facts togain a reexamination is a serious breach <strong>of</strong> the Code <strong>of</strong> Student Behaviour.
