ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN WORKING AROUND BATTERIES!Basic Rules for Battery Care & Maintenance.SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.SHIELDEYES.EXPLOSIVEGASES CANCAUSE BLINDNESSOR INJURY.! DANGER/POISONNO•SPARKS•FLAMES•SMOKINGSULFURICACIDCAN CAUSEBLINDNESS ORSEVERE BURNS.California Proposition 65 Warning: Batteries, battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and leadcompounds, and other chemicals known to the state of Californiato cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm. Wash handsafter handling!Warning: Follow all safety instructions when handling batteries!Always wear safety glasses and a face shield when working on ornear batteries. All batteries generate explosive hydrogen gas. Keep sparks, flamesand cigarettes away from batteries at all times. Do not connect ordisconnect “live” circuits. To avoid creating sparks, always turncharging and testing equipment off before attaching or removingclamps.ALWAYS DISCONNECT GROUNDED CABLE FIRST ANDCONNECT IT LAST TO PREVENT DANGEROUS SPARKS.Perform all work in a well ventilated area. Never lean directly overa battery while boosting, testing or charging it. PROTECT YOUREYES!Batteries contain corrosive sulfuric acid that can destroy clothingand burn the skin. Neutralize acid spills with a paste made ofbaking soda and water or large quantities of water. BE CAREFUL!.SELECTING THE SIZE.Replacement batteries should equal or exceed the OriginalEquipment battery in ratings. Replacing the original battery withone that has a lower capacity may result in poor performance andshorter life. If the replacement battery has considerably lesscapacity than the Original Equipment battery, it may not crank theengine at cold temperatures. Difficulty may also be experienced incranking high compression engines when they are hot. This “hotstart” condition can impose a cranking load on the battery equal toloads experienced at cold temperatures. A replacement batterymust have the same voltage as the Original Equipment battery, and in most cases, it should be of the same polarity. Be sure thereplacement battery is dimensionally correct for the vehicle, andthat it is compatible with the holddown. If it is taller than theOriginal Equipment battery, be sure that top terminals clear thehood or battery cover by at least 3/4" (19mm)..IN-VEHICLE SERVICE AND TESTING.FLUSH EYESIMMEDIATELYWITH WATER.GETMEDICALHELPFAST.KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.DO NOT TIP. KEEP VENT CAPS TIGHT AND LEVEL.DO NOT OPEN FLUSH COVER BATTERIES.Follow safety precautions:WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION!Prior to any testing, visually inspect the battery. Look for:• Cracked or broken case or cover • Loose cable connections• Leaking case-to-cover seal • Corrosion• Damaged or leaking terminalsNeutralize any corrosion with a baking soda/water paste or batterycleaner spray. Scrape or brush off the residue and wash the areawith clean water. Following your visual inspection, check the battery’sstate of charge with a voltmeter. You must boost charge a weak battery before load testing.(See charging chart under “Charging Tips” section.)If fully charged, perform a load test. PROTECT YOUR EYES!.DRY CHARGE ACTIVATION.Important…WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION!1. Fill each cell to proper level with battery-grade sulfuric acid of1.265 specific gravity. Battery and acid must be at atemperature of 60°F to 100°F (16°C to 38°C) at time of filling.2. Boost charge 12V batteries at 15 amps until specific gravity is1.250 or higher and the electrolyte temperature is at least 60°F(15.5°C). BOTH CONDITIONS MUST BE MET. (Boost charge6V and 12V heavy-duty batteries at 30 amps.) If violent gassingor spewing occurs, reduce charge rate.3. After charging, check electrolyte levels. If required, addadditional electrolyte to bring all levels to the bottom of thevent wells. DO NOT OVERFILL. If the battery requires top-offwhile in service, add distilled water…DO NOT ADD ACID..SAFE INSTALLATION.Follow safety precautions:WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION!Special care must be taken when installing a battery to avoid aserious explosion or accident. ALWAYS WEAR EYEPROTECTION WHEN WORKING AROUND BATTERIES…THEY CAN EXPLODE!1. Mark the positive (POS) cable. Turn off all electricalaccessories. Disconnect hood and trunk bulb if opened to cutoff all current.2. Carefully remove old battery, disconnecting the ground cablefirst, to avoid any dangerous sparking around the battery.3. Battery tray should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected fordefects. Use a paste made from baking soda and water toneutralize any acid or corrosion. Repaint if necessary. The traymust be held fast to supporting members to prevent vibrationand road shock. Replace tray and/or holddowns if necessary.4. Clean and dry the new battery and verify that it is not damaged.5. Clean the cables and connectors and check that the cables arefree from corrosion. Replace cables if necessary, sincecorroded or worn cables reduce starting power significantly.6. When placed in the vehicle, the battery should rest level in thetray. Be sure there are no foreign objects lying in the tray thatmay cause damage to the bottom of the battery container. Putcorrosion protector washers on battery terminals. Be sureterminals will clear hood, fender, box lid, etc. to avoid vehicledamage and/or explosion.7. The holddown should be tightened until it is snug. It should notbe tightened to the point that it will distort or crack the batterycover or case. Use torque values specified in the vehicleowner’s manual.8. Cable terminals should be brushed until shiny and spread wideso that they will slip easily over the battery post without force.Do not hammer on them. Be sure marked POS cable isconnected to POS (+) terminal. Connect NEG (-) cable last toprevent dangerous sparks. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN! It’s agood idea to install special corrosion retarding fiber washersaround terminals to help extend battery life.9. Make sure the cable is not putting a strain on the terminal post.Never go back to the hot terminal after attaching the groundcable. The “grounded” cable should be connected to thebattery last. Check for proper battery polarity with respect tothe vehicle specifications. “Ground” polarity is usuallyindicated. “Reversed” polarity will cause serious damage to thevehicle’s electrical system. Note that the positive tapered toppost is larger than the negative top post.241REFERENCE
