27 LETTERS, TRACTS, Iffc^Ihiflory of Britain, with regard to its conftitution, politicalIntereft, and commerce. The other mafter is to teach, i. Arithmetic ; 2.Book-keeping; 3. A courfe of mathematics ; and, 4.A courfe of natural philofophy, illuftrated by experiments. Each of the mafters is to finifli his wholecourfe in two fcfTions, if poflible *, otherwife, whatremains is to be gone through, at proper times, in afubfequent feflion, without any further charge to theIhident. A writing-mafter is to attend the academy >every day , and a teacher is to read the fuperior Greekand Latin claflics one hour every morning with fuchof the ftudents as would make furtheY progrefs in thelanguages. Both thefe mafters to be paid by the ftudents. The inftruments for the experimental part they areto purchafe by contribution, and have already about2:00 guineas fubfcribed for that purpofe. Their firftfcffion begins in 061:ober." This is their plan. It isno doubt well contrived for that place. It has nothingin it that can be called ufelefs or fuperfluousevery thing to be taught has a tendency to the endpropofed. But it may be proper to vary a little fromit, and to make fome additions in an academy here.Writing, arithmetic, book-keeping, and alfo fomeparts of mathematics, are here taught in privatei'chools •, hiftory, chronology, and moft of the otherparts m.entioned in the Perth fcheme, are hardly evenattempted : The things taught are neceflary to accomplifha merchant's clerk ; the things hitherto neglectedwould form the merchant for extenfive bufinefsand for manly converfation : And it is unqueftionablyby teaching the hiftorical and philofophicalthings that a fchool either obtains or deferves thename of an academy.Writing, arithmetic, and book-keeping, may be leftto be taught as before ; and then two mafters will, with the greater fuccefs, manage the remaining parts.
