Goodthing that didn’t happen. The new facility to be builtin Brocklehurst by BuronHealthcare with 125 of the130 beds being funded byIHA will add further availablespaces for those inneed. All this sounds greatand will without doubt helpwith the needs of our agingpopulation. There is however, another question thathas not been addressed. Thatis where are the staff comingfrom, to attend to all thefolks in these beds?Over and over again wehear on the radio and seeon television the chronicissues regarding not enoughstaff, at many seniors facilitiesand the often-sad consequencesof that reality. BCOmbudsperson Kim Carterreleased a report in Februarydealing with the needs ofseniors going forward. Shemade a total of 176 recommendations. Some of thoseare long-term solutions butmany need to be acted onsooner rather than later. Ms.Carter was in Kamloopsrecently for a forum dealingwith the report. One of the biggest problemsright now seems to beplacing seniors that need it,in a home, in a timely manner. The average wait timecurrently is 160 days andsome wait as long as onethousand days.See “Staffing...” page 253rd Annual John Howard Society Scooter RodeoSubmitted PhotoJoe Shields totally ready to go incognito through the course. PharmCertified Diabetes EducatorOne of the hardest issues Ihave consulting patients ontheir blood sugar managementis the effect that stresshas on their level of controlas it is sporadic and unpredictablein nature. Stress canhave many negative effectson your health leading to anincrease risk of high bloodpressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Stress hasa direct effect on blood glucoselevels since your bodyreleases stress hormones aspart of the “fight or flight”response to stress. For mostdiabetics, this leads to anelevation in blood glucoselevels, but for some (in particularin Type 1), it can leadto low blood glucose levels.Additionally, stress canaffect your blood glucoselevels negatively indirectlyby causing you to not take asgood care of yourself as youshould, such as not havingtime to plan proper meals, increasing alcohol intake,and/or decreasing exercise. Therefore, stress managementis a very importantaspect of lifestyle managementfor a diabetic, but isoften not discussed by yourdoctor and there are nota lot of readily availableresources in the communityto support you with this.As we believe in taking ato Seattle can now rent a carin Seattle and drive it acrossthe border to visit Vancouver;or, when a Canadian isvisiting the U.S. and theircar breaks down or theyexperience a last-minuteflight cancellation, they nowcan rent a U.S. vehicle andreturn home safely. The inability of Canadianresidents to bring rentalvehicles into Canada hasbeen a long-standing irritantto the tourism industry. Thischange will improve accessholistic approach to managingyour health, encompassingbody, mind and spirit, wehave decided to host a stressmanagement workshop forour diabetic patients in Junein order to assist you withthis issue. This workshopwill be lead by Amelie Manshadi, who is a registerednurse and a licensed spiritualhealer. She will focuson identifying your personalsources of stress as these areunique to each individualand you may not be aware ofall of them. Then, she willexplore what effects thesestressors have on your bloodsugar levels and overallhealth. Finally, Amelie willreview techniques that youcan use to help you becomemore resilient to stress andhelp you control your diabetesbetter. In order to prepare yourselffor this workshop, it isa good idea to start evaluatingthe effects of stress onyour health. June 2012 Senior Connector www.seniorconnector.com Page 9www.SouthThompsonRV.comMay is the beginning of bird seasonEarly one morning, I awoketo a rustling, scritchingsound just outside my bedroomdoor. Mice? But thereseemed to be too manyunless it was a “herd” oflemmings stopping on theirway to the ocean. Curious,I opened the blinds carefullyand just a little. There,in last year’s leaves, weredozens of white-crestedsparrows, flipping the driedleaves this way and that, asthey hungrily pecked upthe seeds hidden beneath. They were so busy, theydidn’t notice me at all as Isat on the edge of the bedand watched. They were stillthere two hours later butbreakfast called to me and Ileft them to their task. Suchenergy, I thought. If I hadthat much energy comparedto my size, I could accomplishmiracles!May is the beginning ofbird season. Some arriveearlier to stake out theirterritory but by May, nestshave been built and by Juneand the rearing of the chickshas begun. Some birds aretransients, just stoppinglong enough to feed beforecontinuing their route totheir nesting grounds furthernorth, but many stay here.Food forThoughtEnid DamerOne of my favourite spotsat this time of year is AlbertMcGowan Park, a shortwalking distance from myhome I like to go there earlyin the morning or just beforedusk, sit quietly on the benchnear the water and watchthe ducks. Mallards mostly, but some ruddy ducks...rustycoloured with blue bills and aspiky little tail. Coots, a sootyblack bird (looks like a duckbut isn’t a duck), bob as theyswim about, calling to eachother with guttural voices.Louder and even moreguttural, are the red-wingedand yellow-breasted blackbirds. They perch on thereeds while they build theirnests and raise their young, continuously defining theirterritory with harsh cries.Their calls are not musicto my ears, but their matesmust be impressed. They areso beautiful, especially theyellow-breasted, they musybeforgiven their nasty voices.Hundreds nest aroundthe edges of that little pond, setting up a chorus that neverstops.Above the pond to thesouth, is farmland. Whilecows graze peacefully, meadowlarks build nestsin grass clumps. The oddbluebird flashes by lookingfor a nesting box. It is anidyllic scene and one I neverget tired of, yet I almostnever meet another soul.In the evening the adultsplay ball but I’ve never beenjoined by any of them ortheir children. On the southside of the Hal Roger’sCentre, there is a benchwhere a few elderly unable towalk down to the pond, sit inthe sun and enjoy the view. It’s a shame more peopledon’t take advantage of thisKamloopsian treasure. Or isit? If masses of people visitedthe pond, perhaps the wildbirds would go elsewhere. I’llkeep it as a secret!June, to me is strawberrymonth. The Farmers’ Marketbrings in the berries assoon as they begin to ripen. So flavourful, so unlikethose picked green south ofthe border and ripened artificially. The best way to eatstrawberries is in a bowlwith light cream or yogurt. If you are having a specialdinner, this dessert looksspectacular and tastes thesame. You need a ‘flan shell’,a simple white cake batterbaked in a special flanpan, or you can purchase aready made one. Wash anddry the berries and arrangein concentric circles insidethe cooled flan shell, pointyends up. Make a sauce, usingyour own homemade strawberryjam.Mix 3/4 cups of jam with3/4 cups of water. Mix andstir over gentle heat untilthe jam melts and the mixtureis smooth. Mix 4 1/2teaspoons cornstarch with2 tablespoons fresh lemonjuice, and add to the jam.Cook, stirring constantly, until thick. Boil gently, 3minutes. Spoon over strawberries, making sure you fillevery nook and cranny andeach berry is covered. David Thompsonof the Montreal basedNorth West Company madehis famous exploration ofthe entire Columbia Riverfrom its source to its mouth. Thus the Columbia Connectionwas verified as animportant trade route fromcentral and eastern B.C. andWashington to its mouth atFort Astoria. The Astoriansquickly pushed up theColumbia and its tributariesand started three forts; FortOkanagan is what is nowcentral Washington State,Fort Spokane and FortKamloops. The Okanagan FirstNations had led the Astoriansto the head of their valleyand by portages, throughwhat is now Westwold theyfollowed Monte Creek tothe Thompson Valley. TheShuswap First Nations werefriendly and cooperative, too, and they led the Astoriansto Cumcloups whereDavid Stuart wintered withthe First Nations people in1811-1812 and where AlexanderRoss arrived in thespring of 1812 for the purposeof trading. On May 16, 1812 Rosswrote, “We encampedat a place called by thelocal natives, Cumcloups.Assembled to trade werenot less than 2,000 natives.”In the fall of 1812 AlexanderRoss built a small fortnear the junction of theNorth and South ThompsonRivers, eventually to beknown as Fort Kamloops.Within weeks, hard onthe heels of the Astorians, the North West Companyunder Joseph La Rocqueestablished a fur post in thesame area. The men from the twoforts were friendly rivalssince they were the onlyEuropeans for thousandsof miles. In a short timehowever, in the aftermath ofthe War of 1812, the NorthWest Company boughtout the Astorians. In 1813Ross took over as the chieftrader of the Nor’westers, and along with several others, ran the Cumcloups postuntil it was swallowed byits arch-rival the Hudson’sBay Company in 1821. Thetrading post at Cumcloupsfrom 1821 onward was runby the Hudson’s Bay Companyand took the nameThompson’s River Post. The first man put in chargeof the post was Chief TraderJames McMillan and a successionof Scots ran the postfor many years afterward. The routes taken by thefur brigade are most interesting. At first the furs weremoved by trains of horses,as many as 300, throughGrand Prairie (Westwold)to the Okanagan Valley, down the west side of thelake and river to Fort Okanagan,at the meeting of theOkanagan and ColumbiaRivers. From there thefurs were loaded into smallbateaux, somewhat like Yorkboats and sailed downriverto Fort Vancouver, atthe mouth of the ColumbiaRiver. Furs from as farnorth as Fort St. James weretransported through FortKamloops in this manner.Kamloops was an importantstop for the fur brigade eventhough it didn’t producemany furs. It was valued asa strategic location and forits excellent horse pastures.Even then, Kamloops wasseen as a crossroads of bothnorth-south and east-westtrade routes. The parallelsof the fur brigade routes toour present road and transportationsystems, are significantFrom the north, thefurs from Fort St. James andother northern forts crossedfrom 100 Mile House toLittle Fort on essentiallythe same route as today’spresent highway. When theBritish-American borderwas closed in 1846, a newroute had to be found to thePacific coast. The new fort built atVictoria by the Hudson’sBay Company in 1843would now be the destinationfor the fur brigade.Attempts to transport thefurs down the Fraser Riverroute met with ill fate. Itwas far too treacherous, soin 1849 the Fraser routeLate BloomersSinging Duowas abandoned in favour ofone discovered by HenryPeers across the Cascadesvia the Coquihalla RiverValley to Fort Hope, whichwas established in 1848-49to accommodate this trade. This route was not unlikephase one of the CoquihallaHighway opened in May1986.Fort Hope was located atthe joining of the Coquihallaand Fraser Rivers. Herethe furs were transferredfrom horses to boats andsailed down the Fraser Riverto Fort Langley and eventuallyto Fort Victoria onthe southern tip of VancouverIsland. This fur brigaderoute was used for a numberof years and later for cattledrives. It’s easy to see that Kamloopscentral strategic locationis an asset now as itwas in the fur trading days. Many of the transportationroutes of today have evolvedfrom ancient First Nationstrails, to fur brigade routes,to cattle and wagon roads,to modern highways whichlink all of B.C. to its neighbourseastward to Albertaand southward to Washingtonstate. Kamloops today, even more than in previoustimes, is the hub of most ofthe important routes goingthrough B.C. by river, rail, road and air. It remains thenatural distribution centreof South-Central B.C. as ithas been since that day in1812 when the first fur fortwas built here, 200 yearsago. For more informationplease call250.828.0600Sahali Safeway 250-374-2811 945 W ColumbiaNorth Shore Safeway 250-376-8439 750 Fortune DrFor booking information, please call Judy 250-319-9138

This is part of whatHe prayed, “I have revealedYou to those whom Yougave me out of the world. They were yours; You gavethem to me and they haveobeyed Your Word. Nowthey know that everythingYou have given me comesfrom You.” ( John 17:6-7)You can trust that Jesuswill not lead you astray. Hewill not lead you down adead-end back alley. He’sreassuring you here that youcan trust Him to do God’sbest for you, because Jesus isGod, in the flesh, so to speak. In fact, Jesus says it Himself:“I and the Father areone.” ( John 10:30) WhenJesus speaks, it’s God speakingto you. When He acts,it’s God acting on yourbehalf. If you think of God as atop end luxury vehicle, like aBMW or a Mercedes Benz,Jesus is the key that opensthe doors, starts the engineand gives you access to allthe bells and whistles ofyour vehicle.Jesus is like the passwordthat gets you into thecomputer. Without Him, allyou can do is stare at a blankscreen and wish upon a star.Jesus is the ONE who getsYOU IN!As Peter put it: “Salvationis found in no one else, for there is no other nameunder heaven given to menby which we must be saved.”(Acts 4:12)You know something; itis so incredibly simple tocall upon the name of Jesus, because He’s actually rightthere knocking on the doorof your heart.“Here I am! I stand atthe door and knock...”(Revelation 3:20) Hisinvitation is resoundinglyclear and concise. “Come tome, all you who are wearyand carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”(Matthew 11:28)Best of all, He actuallywants to be your Savior!“For God so loved theworld...” ( John 3:16) Gofigure on that one, eh! BUT,HE does!I am ever so grateful!“But thanks be to God! Hegives us the victory throughour Lord Jesus Christ.”(1 Corinthians 15:57)Leonardo da Vinci called feet “a Masterpiece ofEngineering”. When you examine feet you see howamazingly complex they really are. They absorb millionsof pounds of pressure per day. They have 26 bones, 56ligaments, 38 muscles, 33 joints and numerous nerves andblood vessels. They perform very important functions aswell: they propel us forward, act as shock absorbers andprovide a base for us to stand on.We depend on our feet to take us everywhere, but tend totake them for granted and underestimate their importance.Without healthy and well-maintained feet we could lose ourmobility and independence. Some important ways to take care of feet are: Keep themclean and dry, wear proper footwear, care for your skin byreducing corns and calluses, moisturize them and get regularexercise. One big cause of foot problems is wearing shoes with anarrow toe box. These can cause problems like corns andSubmitted by Helen Waters, LPNhammertoes. (Corns are areas of hardened skin on toesand hammertoes are when toes curl under). Wearing openbackedshoes can cause problems as well, when the frictionfrom the heel rubbing against the shoe causes calluses onthe heel.Diabetics, in particular, need to be vigilant about takingcare of their feet. Neuropathy can decrease the ability to feelthe feet and therefore injuries may not be felt. (A pebblein the shoe could develop into an ulcer). Also, high bloodsugar levels can support the growth of bacteria and fungusin wounds. It’s also important to not perform ‘bathroom surgery’ onyourself. If you have problems taking care of your feet, it’ssafer to have a professional take care of them. Regular footcare, either by yourself or a professional, will keep your feetgoing strong for years to come.(Some ideas from ‘Nursing Foot Care’ by Susan Tremble)Tired of Cooking & Cleaning?Room & board for low income seniors in abright, new, active seniors community.• Home cookedmeals• Weekly housekeeping• Laundry roomon every floor• Exercise program• Planned activitiesM a n o r% River City Seniors Society• Library/computer room• Media room• On city bus route• Walk to Brockshopping mall• Friendly caringstaffCall today for your opportunity to join us.250-376-6536www.rivercityseniors.caSeniors ServicesYard CareSeniors DiscountCall for a FREE quote250-574-3145• Lawn Maintenance • Power Raking• Edging • Rototilling • Hedge Trimming• Pruning • Spring/Fall Clean-up• Aerating • Handyman ServicesSeniorConnectorThe Seniors’ Own NewspaperCall Sharon Brookerto take care of allyour advertising needs.250.376.8883Feriberum ipicipsundi omnis ut aut expliqu isinctototatem vellenihitAximus molupta spernat. Page 16Senior Connector www.seniorconnector.comJune 2012Canada remembers D-DayIntroductionD-Day is the name given to the landing of 160,000 Alliedtroops in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. The successof the invasion of Normandy was really the beginning of theend for Nazi Germany. The invasion, also called “OperationOverlord,” involved five separate landings by American,British, and Canadian troops and was commanded byAmerican General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Stiff Germanresistance resulted in nearly 10,000 Allied casualties, but theGermans were ultimately unable to repel the Allied forces.Although German resistance continued even after all fivebeachheads were taken, they had too few troops in the areato be effective. By August 1944, all of Northern France wasunder Allied control as Eisenhower began to prepare for theinvasion of Germany.D-Day and the Battle ofNormandy led to the end ofthe Second World War.Canadians fought there andmany young men lost theirlives there. We must not forgettheir sacrifice.Cathy McLeod, MPKamloops-Thompson-Cariboo979 Victoria StreetKamloops, BC V2C 2C1250-851-4991Essential FactsMany scholars have tried to explain the term “D-Day,”suggesting it stood for “decision day” or “disembarkationday,” but most likely it comes from the army’s use of theterm to mean an “undefined day,” or the first day of anyoperation.D-Day was originally scheduled for June 5, but theweather did not cooperate. The operation was pushed backto June 6, 1944.The D-Day invasion involved 5,000 ships carrying menand vehicles across the English Channel as well as 800planes dropping over 13,000 men in parachutes. A further300 planes dropped bombs on German troops defending thebeaches. Over 100,000 Allied troops made it to shore thatday. The most difficult landing of D-Day was at Omahabeach. Navigation problems resulted in many men drowningbefore they reached land. Omaha Beach also had the largestamount of German troops, and the fighting was fierce. It isthe Omaha Beach battle that is reenacted in the opening ofthe movie Saving Private Ryan. The success of D-Day was a death knell for the Germans.Hitler was forced to fight a two-front war against theRussians on the East and the Americans, British, Canadians, and French on the West. Within a year, Hitler committedsuicide, and the war was over.Taken from the website: http://www.enotes.com/topics/d-dayELEGANT APARTMENTS FOR ACTIVE & INDEPENDENT SENIORS1789 Primrose Court(Just up the hill from Costco)Kamloops, BCCome meet Shona Cox, our newMarketing & Rental Coordinator,at theSENIOR’S ExPOJune 1-2, 2012McArthur Sports Centreand learn about ourresidence & amenities.a t aP t i nPe vi ni eewv i e w250.851.8800toll-free 1.877.841.8999www.ridgepointe.caCall Shona today to book your personal tour.FOR PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU - FUN AND FULL OF LIFE!“We are hereto help ourveterans”The Royal Canadian LegionBranch 52 Kamloops • 425 Lansdowne Street250-374-1742 • Lounge 250-374-1743On June 6, 1944 Canadian Forcesplayed a large part in the invasionof Normandy, turning the tideof the Second World War andcontributing to an Allied victory. We gratefully acknowledge thesacrifice of those Veterans whogave their lives, and those stillliving. Both the Federal and Provincialgovernments need to find ways to trainmore staff quickly and ensure the owners ofFrom page 24the facilities that contract to the governmentpay them properly. There needs to be anenforcement component to ensure adequatestaff is used. Also, there needs to be harshconsequences for those that don’t meet thestandard set out by the government.Canadian seniors have given their all toour county and deserve to be treated withthe highest respect. Nothing short of thebest care available and the ability to enjoytheir final days is acceptable.Other considerationsLocation:Is it central to local relatives and friends? Is there easy access to major roads and highways? Is it central to frequently accessed amenities, such as a grocery store, drug store, bank, medical clinic and place of worship? What about proximity to a shopping centre, library, continuing education institution, park, recreation centre, restaurants and cultural attractions?Amenities (in a condo or lifestyle community):What kind of security measures are in place? Is there a party room for special events and a community room for group meetings? Are there fitness facilities? Recreation and leisure opportunities? What amenities are included in the monthly condo or homeowners’ association fee, andwould you make use of enough of them to justify the cost? What is the cost of optionalamenities, such as a golf club membership?Lisa M. Petsche is a social worker and a freelance writer specializing in boomer and senior issues. On May 11 Buron Healthcare Ltd. andInterior Health representatives were joinedby Kamloops North Thompson MLA TerryLake to officially break ground at the site ofthe region’s newest residential care facility inBrocklehurst.“The community is eagerly anticipatingthis expansion of seniors care in Kamloops.”said Kamloops-North Thompson MLATerry Lake. “This new facility will allow residentsto receive the care they need closer tohome and to their loved ones.”The new three-storey building will house125 publicly funded beds and five private paybeds, providing a full range of services in ahome-like setting. Residential beds such asthese provide 24/7 care and support for individualswith complex care needs includingthe frail and elderly and those with dementia, whose needs may change over time.“Seniors are living longer, healthier livesand our government is committed to providinghousing solutions that serve theirchanging care needs,” said Kamloops-SouthThompson MLA Kevin Krueger.Key design features include the creationof a small, 10-bed neighbourhood to providea more intimate setting and allow careproviders to better respond to residentswith specific needs. It is a flexible space andincludes its own outdoor private courtyardand direct entrance, particularly beneficialfor the special needs of certain client groups.“We are pleased to be at this milestoneand look forward to watching the newbuilding take shape,” said Norman Embree,Interior Health Board Chair. “This investmentwill allow us to offer residents all thecomforts of home while at the same timeprovide high quality health care.”The building is designed to reflect Kamloops’natural environment, incorporating acombination of wood and stone. The innerneighbourhood colours and names taketheir inspiration from the Kamloops miningindustry, incorporating the natural tones incopper, quartz, amber and jade.“Buron is committed to providing thebest home possible for our residents,” saidMary McDougall of Buron Healthcare. “Ourdesign team has established a plan that isvisually appealing while adhering to InteriorHealth’s design principles. It is homelike, safe, innovative, efficient and environmentallyresponsible.“Construction will get underway at the sitelater this month and will be complete in 2013.Interior Health currently contracts withBuron at Haven Hill Retirement Centre inPenticton; Buron was recently awarded acontract to add 66 new beds to that facility.Buron also provides care services to 130seniors at Simon Fraser Lodge in PrinceGeorge, BC.I’ll be waiting onthe front porchOn the first day, God created the dogand said, “Sit all day by the door of yourhouse and bark at anyone who comes inor walks past. For this, I will give you alife span of twenty years.” The dog said,“That’s a long time to be barking. Howabout only ten years and I’ll give you backthe other ten?”And God said that it was good.On the second day, God created themonkey and said, “Entertain people, dotricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’llgive you a twenty-year life span.”The monkey said, “Monkey tricks fortwenty years? That’s a pretty long time toperform. How about I give you back tenlike the dog did?”And God, again said that it was good.On the third day, God created the cowand said, “You must go into the field withthe farmer all day long and suffer underthe sun, have calves and give milk tosupport the farmer’s family. For this, I willgive you a life span of sixty years.”The cow said, “That’s kind of a toughlife you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back theother forty?”And God agreed it was good.On the fourth day, God created humansand said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoyyour life. For this, I’ll give you twentyyears.”But the human said, “Only twentyyears? Could you possibly give me mytwenty, the forty the cow gave back, theten the monkey gave back, and the ten thedog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”“Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.”So that is why for our first twenty years,we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. Forthe next forty years, we slave in the sunto support our family. For the next tenyears, we do monkey tricks to entertainthe grandchildren. And for the last tenyears, we sit on the front porch and bark ateveryone.Life has now been explained to you. There is no need to thank me for thisvaluable information. I’m doing it as apublic service. Why? Don’t we all care?Is greed and destruction all that we’ll leave them? Our choice. Will they hear only silence? It’s five minutes past two and the children have wakened,The decision was made, the final steps taken. Was it my fault and yours that they’re crying?Do they know already their world’s begun dying? How can we answer their innocent why----Where did the earth go? June 2012 Senior Connector www.seniorconnector.com Page 31Protection OrdersThe following is part of a series of informational articlesaimed at increasing public awareness about the services providedby the Kamloops Victim Services Unit. The Unit offers a variety of information and services, atno cost, to any victim or witness of crime or trauma. All Unitmembers have received specialized, comprehensive training invictims’ issues, the criminal justice system and crisis interventiontechniques. The Unit is located at the main Police Detachment at560 Battle Street. Victim Services operates 24 hours a day, sevendays a week and may be accessed by calling 250-828-3223.People seek protection orders for a variety of reasons andin a variety of situations. Protection orders may be soughtto prevent violence or damage to property by a co-worker, aneighbor or a relative other than a spouse. While the courtsissue the greatest number of protection orders to womenlooking for protection from their male partner or ex-partner,they are also available to same sex couples or to men whoneed protection from their female partner or ex-partner.There are two primary types of protection orders: PeaceBonds and Restraining Orders. Due to the complexity ofthe topic, we will only cover Peace Bonds in this article.A Peace Bond is a court order made by a Provincial Courtjudge. The bond requires the defendant to keep the peaceand be of good behavior, and to comply with other specifiedconditions for a maximum of 12 months. Other conditionsmay include, but are not limited to, no contact with theapplicant directly or indirectly; a no go order for a locationor radius; to abide by a curfew; to surrender all firearms andweapons; to abstain from alcohol and drugs, and to submitto police requests for breath demands. In order to be eligible for a peace bond, an applicant mustshow a genuine fear for his/her life, his/her children’s lives,and/or his/her property is in danger. There must also be adocumented pattern of past violence or harassment againstthe applicant. To apply for a peace bond, applicants mustprovide a statement to police outlining the circumstancesunder which a peace bond is required. The investigatingofficer will conduct an investigation and note the cause forthe peace bond. If the investigating officer determinesthe criteria for a peace bond has been met, the officer willprepare a report to Crown Counsel for consideration.Crown Counsel will review the report and will eitherapprove or decline the request. If the request is approved, ahearing date will be set in Provincial Court. The defendantwill be summonsed to court, and the applicant will besubpoenaed to court. The defendant may hire counsel forcourt representation, as Crown Counsel will represent theapplicant. Both individuals will present their case to thejudge, who will make the decision whether the peace bondwill be granted or declined. If the peace bond is granted, the defendant will notreceive a criminal record unless the court order is breached. If the defendant fails to comply with the peace bond, afurther court date may be set to deal with the matter. While protection orders are not fail-safe, they providepeople with another level of personal security. For furtherinformation about peace bonds and restraining orders, phone the Kamloops RCMP Victim Service Unit at 250-828-3223 or drop by 560 Battle Street. The ratio of women tomen was even better thanCarl had hoped.Welcome to Mayfair — the newest development at RiverBend SeniorsCommunity.
