Caffeine- A Very Unhealthy Addiction
By Stephanie Hoffman
Entertainment Editor
Energy drink consumption
has continued to
increase in popularity since
1997. Teen energy drink
consumption has been linked
to serious health issues, including
obesity and a lack of
sleep.
“I drink energy drinks
almost everyday,” said senior
Lauren Forlano, “I don’t feel
as alert throughout the day
without one.”
The impact of these
drinks also depends on how
they are consumed. People,
especially young people, tend
to abuse them, by drinking
more than one at a time.
“When I drink energy
drinks, I tend to drink more
than one, but I only do that
maybe once a week, or when
I feel the need to,” said freshman
John Holland.
“I drink energy
drinks once a week usually,”
said freshman Matt Tingle,
“It wakes me up for hockey.”
Proposed Budget Cuts Alter Student, Staff Life
By Ajua Duker
Staff Reporter
The budget may be in better
shape than originally anticipated.
In an email sent out by
Dr. Jonathan Lewis, Fauquier
County Public Schools Superintendant,
on March 23, Lewis
stated, “We are all very grateful
for the hard work of Senator Jill
Vogel, Delegate Scott Lingamfelter
and others to ensure improved
funding for students
in Fauquier County schools
through the new state budget.
Now, the Board of Supervisors
will decide how much local
funding we will receive.”
The current budget indictates
a $3.3 million reduction in local
funding. However, much
of that loss could be made up
by the equalization of taxes. If
the Board of Supervisors sets a
tax rate below equalization, the
budget could be cut again.
Preparing for a long, busy day, senior Lauren Forlano takes a big sip of her Monster energy drink.
important to keep in mind
for teens include: sleep disturbance,
headaches that can
lead to decreased concentration
and overall function, dehydration
(teens think that
they are hydrating them-
As it stands now, there will
still be freshman sports next year,
the activity fee will remain at $50
per sport rather than $100, summer
school will remain in session,
coaches and staff who perform
other services for the school will
not receive a ten percent cut in
pay, and contractual employees
will not lose two contract days.
Although there are areas
this new proposal was able
to save, there are still some cuts
that will occur. The county will
lose six positions, new teaches
will be hired at a lower rate than
their predecessors, transportation
employees will receive a cut in
over-time pay, the LPN program
will be cut, and low enrollment
courses could be dropped.
The Board of Supervisors
is scheduled to make decisions
regarding the taxes by
March 30. The School Board will
make any necessary revisions at
the April 12 meeting.
“If I don’t have one,
I feel really drained, and not
as energetic but my after effects
from drinking energy
drinks are just headaches
What can the county do to save money?
“They could close school earlier
to save electricity.”
