Wembley Area Action Plan - Proposed Submission Version69Transport 6with an improved access arrangement betweenOlympic Way and the Stadium would greatlyenhance the southern part of Olympic Way andremove what is currently a poor street environment. It would be supportive of the removal of thepedestrian ramps whilst ensuring providing thataccess to the Stadium and emergency egress areintegral to the design, remains adequate and thatany changes help address what is currently a poorstreet environment.Cyclists6.41 The provision of shared surfaces, where allthe users of streets share the public realm, is arecognised way of improving the environment andsafety of pedestrians and cyclists as it leads tomuch more considerate use by drivers of motorvehicles. Clearly, exclusively pedestrian streets willalso provide a safe and attractive environment, especially for shoppers, and Brent is one of theMayor's ‘biking boroughs’ with the intention ofincreasing cycling levels in outer London. Thereis an existing network of dedicated signed cycleroutes (shown on Map 6.2) and stretches ofsecondary local routes which will provide a degreeof encourage people to access into the areaWembley by bicycle. However, cycle links intoWembley are poor or non-existent with a numberof physical barriers such as railways, the NorthCircular and the River Brent. Connections betweenWembley and Willesden are particularly limited.Picture 6.5 Cycle path, Great CentralWay6.42 The London Cycle Network (LCN+) aims toprovide Map 6.2 shows existing cycleinfrastructure, proposed improvements within theAAP area, and identifies possible new links acrossmajor barriers. The Wembley to Ealing cyclecorridor is identified as a priority for infrastructureinvestment in Brent’s Local Implementation Plan2011-14 (LIP2). Improvements and new cyclinginfrastructure will be planned through the LocalImplementation Plan, Strategic Infrastructure Plan, and Transport Strategy. Funding will be securedthrough developer contributions, the BikingBoroughs Programme, TfL and other future fundingstreams. convenient, safe and accessible radialand orbital linkages throughout London. Whereverpossible, these should be segregated and protectedfrom major road traffic. Limited facilities and routesexist in the Wembley area, therefore furtherenhancements would be desirable.
