Wembley Area Action Plan - Proposed Submission Version39Urban Design & Place Making 4A Strategy for a Legible WembleyPicture 4.32 View of the Stadium from the WhiteHorse BridgeArrival by Road4.55 However, a A significant amount number ofpeople (on both event days and non-event days)arrive in the area by bus, car or other modes ofroad transport and the experience of coming toWembley should equally cater for these people. The Plan’s approach is one which balances theneed to discourage car use by prioritising walking, cycling and public transport whilst ensuring that thearea is accessible to traffic such as event-relatedcoaches, waste collection and delivery vehicles, emergency services and disabled drivers (see6.8).Given the scale of planned regeneration, thedesire to create a sustainable mixed-use communityand the relative ease of access to the wider Londonregion, the council will continue to focus on thethree stations as hubs of activity and foci fordevelopment in the area.Picture 4.33 View of Wembley Stadium from the east4.56 As well as improving the public transportinfrastructure, a two-way tidal carriageway linkingWembley Stadium with the North Circular Roadhas been created along most of the route and, although the improvements have significantly easedtraffic flows on event days, there is still no realsense of arrival when entering Wembley from theeast.4.57 Given the scale of planned regeneration, the desire to create a sustainable mixed-usecommunity and the relative ease of access to thewider London region, the council will continue tofocus on the three stations as hubs of activity andfoci for development in the area.4.58 Although some significant improvementshave been made, access into Wembley by road, particularly from the North Circular Road (A406)lacks any real sense of identity or arrival. Giventhat the eastern area will remain focused onemployment uses, the principal means forimproving legibility and public perception of thearea will be to improve the public realm and wayfinding throughout the industrial estate.Opportunities for new development to enhancemain routes into and through the area should beexploited. The quality of development along keyroutes and the potential to enhance importantjunctions will be given significant weight whenconsidering applications in these locations.WEM 2Gateways to WembleyThe enhancement of nodes around keyjunctions will be sought, particularly to the eastof the AAP area. Architecture and public realmdesign should seek to reinforce the role ofthese gateways and nodes as importantelements of the urban experience.Any new development around the Trianglejunction (High Road/Wembley Hill Road) mustdemonstrate how the strengthening ofconnections through the area has beenconsidered.
