Having due regard for advancing equality involves:Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people due to their protected characteristics;Taking steps to meet the needs of people from protected groups where these are different from the needs ofother people; andEncouraging people from protected groups to participate in public life or in other activities where theirparticipation is disproportionately lowThe Act states that meeting different needs involves taking steps to take account of disabled people’s disabilities. Itdescribes fostering good relations as tackling prejudice and promoting understanding between people from differentgroups. It states that compliance with the duty may involve treating some people more favourably than others.Page 132Other considerationsThere are other considerations relating to the serving of a CPO which are included here in this EIA but not againsteach protected characteristic below. This is because it may be that those affected (residents with differing rights)may be of one or more protected groups but this is not known at this stage.Residents: freeholders, leaseholders, social rented tenants of the Council, and private rented tenantsResidents may be freeholders, leaseholders, or private rented tenants.
