Sydney,controlled by the Commonwealth Government, under conditions which willenable you not only to become an efficient tradesman, but give you theopportunity of qualifying as a Drafting Technical or Professional Officer inMechanical or Electrical Engineering, or Ship Construction.RATES OF PAY are in accordance with the Arbitration Court Awardmade between the Department and the Trade Unions. Technical CollegeFees will be paid by the Commonwealth Government and on completion ofthe first year, an additional weekly payment is made, subject to satisfactoryprogress. Three weeks' annual leave, and liberal sick leave aregranted, and an allowance is payable to apprentices who are obliged tolive away from home owing to distance.ELIGIBILITY 5 year apprenticeships are available in all trades for boyswho are IS years and under 17 years. PerthThe Navy's New Ships(By a SpecialCotrespondent}A piece of Australian Naval history was enactedin (he United States Navy's Shipyards at Bostonon Saturday, July 17.The occasion was the commissioning ofH.M.A.S. PERTH, the first of the Rj\.N.'s threeguided missile destroyers on order from theUnited States.The 4,500 ton ship represents a new era in thesea defence of Australia ... it is the Navy's firstdestroyer fitted with guided missiles and the firstAmerican-built destroyer obtained for Australiain the fifty-four vear history of the R.A.N.H.M.A.S. PERTH is the twenty-fifth destroyerof the Charles F. Adams type to be built in theUnited States.She is the first of the destroyers to commissionfor a "foreign" Navy.I KARA SYSTEMA number of modifications have been made inthe Australian ships.One of the main changes is in the antisubmarineweaponry.Australia's own anti-submarine missile systemIKARA" will be fitted in place of the U.S.N.'s•ASROC*.This type of destroyer is considered to havelew equals anywhere in the world.The United State Navy has been enthusiasticabout the performance of the destroyers alreadyin service.One senior U.S.N, officer describes them as:The ship we have been trying to build for fiftyyears ... it has the best of everything."PERTH will be followed by H.M.A.S. HOBARTat the end of this vear. and bv H.M.A.S. BRISBANEin 1967.COMMISSIONINGH.M.A.S. PERTH officially became an Australianwarship at the commissioning.Before a gathering of Australian and Americanguests, the Australian Ambassador to the UnitedStates, Mr. Keith Waller, formally accepted thedestroyer for the Australian Government.PERTH'S Commanding Officer, Captain IanCartwright, read the commissioning warrant.A United States Navy band, performed at theceremony, and played some typical Australiannumbers with the aid of music sent specially fromAustralia.Saturday's ceremony ended with the WhiteEnsign being hoisted, and the ship's company of332 officers and men marched on board to takecharge of the destroyer.The Chief of the Australian Naval Staff, ViceAdmiral Alan McNicoll, attended the ceremony.With the commissioning of H.M.A.S.
