SUMMARY<br />

The President has challenged all <strong>of</strong> us <strong>in</strong> federal service<br />

to revolutionize how we approach energy efficiency and<br />

renewable energy technologies while we pursue the<br />

recommendations <strong>of</strong> the National <strong>Energy</strong> Policy. Congress<br />

has also assigned a high priority to energy conservation<br />

and renewable energy <strong>in</strong> legislation.<br />

This national priority is high because America’s prosperity<br />

and quality <strong>of</strong> life depend on an economy fueled by<br />

affordable, reliable energy. Each <strong>of</strong> us plays a vital role <strong>in</strong><br />

ensur<strong>in</strong>g that energy and water resources rema<strong>in</strong> available<br />

to susta<strong>in</strong> our economy and are abundant for future<br />

generations. In order to achieve greater energy <strong>in</strong>dependence<br />

and security, we all must cont<strong>in</strong>ue to <strong>in</strong>crease our efforts to<br />

conserve energy and aggressively pursue renewable energy<br />

opportunities.<br />

With limited budgets and resources, pursu<strong>in</strong>g these goals<br />

can be challeng<strong>in</strong>g. However, many federal employees<br />

have found successful solutions us<strong>in</strong>g a number <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>novative tools and creative projects that serve as sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

examples for us to follow. The dedication <strong>of</strong> our federal<br />

energy champions demonstrates how every action we take<br />

as federal employees and <strong>in</strong>dividuals can cut our nation’s<br />

energy bill and help ensure our national security and<br />

prosperity for years to come.<br />

The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> is work<strong>in</strong>g hard to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease the pace established by this year’s award w<strong>in</strong>ners.<br />

We will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to provide all available resources, expertise,<br />

and assistance so the federal energy management community<br />

can cont<strong>in</strong>ue on its well-established path <strong>of</strong> excellence.
