3Reducing the risk of speed-related crashesSpeed-related crashes can be avoided if you control your speed and give yourselfenough time to scan ahead for hazards and enough time and space to do somethingabout them. The advice is simple:• Drive within the speed limits.• Slow down before entering curves or bends – braking in a curvecan be dangerous.• Look for and take note of warning signs indicating curves or other hazardsahead and slow down before you get to them.• Slow to the speed recommended (or lower than that shown) on the warningsigns.• If the weather is bad or the visibility is poor slow to a speed where you can pullup quickly should a hazard emerge.Warning signs like the ones shown in the picture are there to help you manage yourspeed. They alert you to possible hazards ahead. However, they will not help youif you are travelling too fast to detect them or to prepare for the hazards indicated.Controlling your speed is largely your responsibility.Sticking to the speed limits and adjusting your speed to suit the conditions will helpensure that you avoid a crash, speeding fines or losing your licence through demeritpoints.Driver qualification handbook 81
