2Looking out for yourself and othersVulnerable road usersAs a <strong>driver</strong> you have a responsibility to drivesafely and to look out for the safety of yourselfand other road users. This section providessome revision and new information that mayhelp you in minimising your risk as a <strong>driver</strong> andthat of other road users when interacting with:• Vulnerable road users – pedestrians, cyclistsand motorcyclists.• Heavy vehicles – trucks and buses.Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are vulnerable road users, who have littleprotection in the event of a collision with a vehicle. A crash that could kill orinjure a pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist may only leave a scratch or small dent inyour car. Each year, about 5,500 pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are injuredor killed in NSW.All <strong>driver</strong>s are pedestrians at some time of the day or week and some <strong>driver</strong>s alsoride bicycles or motorcycles.
