EditorialA Keppel sonIt is when we are passionate about what we dothat we achieve our best work. The late Nelson Yeo, MD of Keppel Shipyardand Keppel Offshore & Marine (Marine), whopassed away suddenly on 4 September 2012 hadembodied such passion. He once commented, ”Ihave a passion for my work and for the company. It’s an attitude I want from all my staff. If youdon’t enjoy your job, no amount of money canmake you stay.”And stay he did for 30 years, rising throughthe ranks from a shiprepair manager to helmKeppel Shipyard (refer to a special tribute to Nelsonon page 26).His passion was not confined to his area ofexpertise but powered everything that he wasinvolved in. He exemplified Keppel’s core valuesand Can-Do! spirit. He was always ready to roll uphis sleeves to tackle challenges hands-on.Customers saw Nelson as more than just a businesspartner. He was also their friend, committed tobuilding strong and lasting relationships. They sawin him a man of integrity who always worked atwin-win solutions. Such keen customer focus hasbeen key to Keppel’s success.the welfare of his people had inspired and built upa united workforce in Keppel Shipyard. He was amentor to many of the younger executives whomhe had spent time to groom and empower. He was also a fierce champion of workplace safetyand had tenaciously cultivated a culture whereeveryone looks out for each other. His definitionof success in the business went beyond that forKeppel Shipyard; he worked tirelessly to improveand promote safety, education and attract talentto benefit the industry as a whole.Away from the workplace, Nelson was a friend tothe less privileged. For the Keppel-GK Eco Village tohouse needy families in the Philippines, he ensuredthat everything done for these homeless was of ahigh standard. He showed the way by laying thebricks, literally. His charitable and compassionatespirit encouraged Keppelites to make an enduringdifference in the lives of others.Impact that lasts. That is what, I believe, Nelson hadworked so hard to achieve and leave as legacy. Hisspark was ignited by Keppelites before him and ifKeppelites following him continue to fuel the torchfor quality, teamwork, safety and integrity, we willblaze the trail for Keppel well into the future.Nelson was more than just a boss and co-workerto his colleagues and staff. Empowering Lives 31Keppelites AbroadLearning opportunities in TianjinDespite China’s meteoricgrowth over the past coupleof decades, there are manymore areas within the countryyet to be explored anddeveloped. One such areawas the site of Sino-SingaporeTianjin Eco-City (TianjinEco-City), initially a piece ofnon-arable water-scarce landwith harsh weather, but isnow developing towards athriving city.Sensing the tremendouslear ning opportunitiesavailable at this landmarkproject, Jack Tham, GMat Tianjin Eco-City KeppelNew Energy DevelopmentCo. seized the challenge ofsetting up a joint entity withChinese partners to developa District Heating and CoolingSystems (DHCS) plant to servethe Eco-Business Park in theTianjin Eco-City.Jack had a wealth ofexperience from building thefirst District Cooling Systemsplant in Changi Business Park, and brought with him theCan Do! spirit to China. In addition,we needed to work with aprudent budget and had tojuggle multiple roles. But wetold ourselves that we mustsee to completion what westarted.”More difficult than engineeringchallenges was navigatingthe local government andunderstanding the localpeople.“Dealing with authorities hereis very different from what weare used to in Singapore.Permits and approvals arerequired at all levels, so theserequire a lot of administrativework. Sometimes the otherSingapore contractors wecooperate with are equallyunfamiliar with how to interactwith local government.“We had to get to know thelocals at a personal level andbuild up trust. And this needsto be done at all levels, notjust with the top leaders.”Indeed, Jack spent muchof his time in the weekspreceding the Mid-AutumnFestival, a major festival inChina, visiting key partnerswith mooncakes to buildup goodwill and trust. Headmitted that while the tripsrequire a lot of effort, heenjoyed getting to knowhis business partners at apersonal level, beyond merebusiness formalities.Today, the DHCS plant inTianjin is complete and readyto receive its first customers.“This is only the beginning ofa long journey,” Jack mused.“The Eco-City will take timeto grow.
