Therefore, A novelmethod of drug delivery to inhibit the growth ofprostate cancer cells has been developed thatwould allow for delivery of effectiveconcentrations of paclitaxel over extended timeintervals while minimizing toxicity. It has beenshown that the HER2 receptor is over-expressedin prostate cancer cells. It was also known thattrastuzumab (an antibody) binds specifically toHER2. But there had been no clinical dataindicating that this antibody would provide anyrelief for prostate cancer patients. DannyGoldstein, a student of Prof. Simon Benita, showedthat attaching trastuzumab molecules to thesurface of oil droplets in nanoemulsions madepossible the targeting of such droplets to cellsover-expressing the HER2 receptor. He coupledtrastuzumab with emulsions containing the toxicagent paclitaxel-palmitate and evaluated theefficiency of these emulsions in laboratory testson cancerous prostate cells and on mice withinduced prostate cancer.
