Current Trends in Biotechnology and PharmacyVol. 5 (1) i-vii January 2011. ISSN 0973-8916 (Print), 2230-7303 (Online)Vmaking it difficult to effectively deliver the drugto the points needed. It is also known to inducehypersensitivity reactions. Therefore, A novelmethod of drug delivery to inhibit the growth ofprostate cancer cells has been developed thatwould allow for delivery of effectiveconcentrations of paclitaxel over extended timeintervals while minimizing toxicity. It has beenshown that the HER2 receptor is over-expressedin prostate cancer cells. It was also known thattrastuzumab (an antibody) binds specifically toHER2. But there had been no clinical dataindicating that this antibody would provide anyrelief for prostate cancer patients. DannyGoldstein, a student of Prof. Simon Benita, showedthat attaching trastuzumab molecules to thesurface of oil droplets in nanoemulsions madepossible the targeting of such droplets to cellsover-expressing the HER2 receptor. He coupledtrastuzumab with emulsions containing the toxicagent paclitaxel-palmitate and evaluated theefficiency of these emulsions in laboratory testson cancerous prostate cells and on mice withinduced prostate cancer. He found that thisemulsion compound did not cause a hypersensitivereaction upon injection and even yielded betterresults than known drug treatments while inhibitingtumor growth substantially.S.ShankarEDUCATIONPhD ProgramsPhD Opening 2011, Faculty of LifeSciences, University of Copenhagen, Faculty ofLife Sciences, Universitetsparken 2, 2100Copenhagen, Denmark.
