MANUSCRIPT SOURCES OF THE HISTORY OF NEWFRANCE AND THE FRENCH REGIME IN THEPUBLIC ARCHIVES, OTTAWATHE following are in the Public Archives of Canada at Ottawa, being transcripts of the originalsin Paris and London. Most of them are calendared in various Reports on the Canadian Archiveswhich are indicated at the proper place, but in making use of these calendars it must be remembered that they are neither detailed nor <strong>com</strong>plete. A summary knowledge of this collection isobtainable by consulting the Guide to the Documents in the Manuscript Room at the Pubhs Archivesof Canada.FRENCH SOURCESARCHIVES DES COLONIESSeriesThis series (189 vols.,patches from the king and the ministers to governors and intendants and also of letters from;the same to bishops, ecclesiastics, officers and various officials and persons connected with thecolonies It also contains numerous miscellaneous papers. It includes Canada, Acadia, Newfoundland, He Bovale, He St Jean and Louisiana, and extends from 1663 to 1785. The documentsrelate to every possible branch of the civil, military, economic and religious administration andlife of these colonies.This series is calendared as follows : vols. 1-42 in the Supplement to the Report on CanadianArchives for 1899, pp. 245-548 vols. 42-74 in the; Report for 1904, appendix K vols.;75-189in the Report for 1905, vol. i, part 6. It is thus the <strong>com</strong>plementof Series B.Series C n (I): CanadaThis first section (1<strong>23</strong> vols., 1575-1784) is mainly <strong>com</strong>posed of the official correspondence sentto France bv the governors and the intondants of New France from Frontenac and Talon down toVaudreuil and Bigot. It also includes letters patent, edicts, charters, concessions, etc. relatingto the early history of Canada, 1575 to 1660. It contains numerous edicts, memoirs, ordinances,militarv plans, trade reports, concessions, statistics, Indian papers, journals of explorations andexpeditions, etc. There is throughout the collection a large quantity of miscellaneous correspondencefrom ecclesiastics, officials and various persons There are several volumes of Proceedings of the Conseil de Marine concerning Canada, and two volumes (106-107) relate but toecclesiastical matters. This section is calendared as follows : vols,1-30 in the Report on CanadianArchives for 1885, pp. xxix-lxxix vols. 31-76 in the; Report for 1886, pp. xxxix-cl vols. 76-122;in the Report for 1887, pp. ccxxxix-cclxiii. A miscellaneous volume, not numbered, is calendaredin the Report for 1887, pp. ccxxxvii-ccxxxix.C nSeries C li (II): AcadiaThia second section (10 vols., 1603-1814) is mainly formed of the official correspondenceaddressed to France by the governors and officials of Acadia. It also includes <strong>com</strong>missionsmemorials, grants, papers, relating to De Monte, Razilly, La Tour, Charmsay and Templeare also to be found many miscellaneous papers, numerous memoirs, journals, etc., aat Beraent, <strong>com</strong>merce, English colonies, military matters, Indians, priests and missions, etc. Misce]laneous papers and correspondence relate to Acadians under English domination.This section is calendared in the Report for 1887, pp. ccxxxix-cclxm.221
