Natural Hazards Mitigation PlanCity of Glendale, CaliforniaSection 6 – EarthquakesMap 6.3: Earthquake Scenario for the 1857 San Andreas Rupture ShowingEstimated Intensity Values in the Region Resulting from this EventThe next closest segment of the San Andreas fault to the City of Glendale is the Carrizo segment, located approximately 41 miles from downtown. This fault segment, which is about 75 miles (121km) long, also ruptured during the 1857 earthquake. Slip on this segment of the San Andreas faultwas greater than on either of the two other segments, averaging 6 to 7 m, and locally displayingoffsets of as much as 8 to 10 m. Several paleoseismological studies have been conducted on thissegment of the San Andreas fault. This would suggest that this segment is well understood, but thedata are often conflicting or inconclusive. Past earthquakes have been resolved in some trenchexposures but not in others only a few miles away, and the slip estimates for past earthquakes asdetermined from these exposures also vary. To account for and resolve these discrepancies, the 1995WGCEP used a slip rate of 34±3 mm/yr, and a slip per event of 7±4 m. The error bars on the slipper-eventdata reflect the varying measurements that have been made along the fault length for the1857 event. These values resolve into a recurrence interval of 206 (+149, -125 years). This segment2006 PAGE 6 - 18
