Natural <strong>Hazard</strong>s <strong>Mitigation</strong> PlanCity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Glendale</strong>, <strong>California</strong>SECTION 4:Section 4 – Multi-<strong>Hazard</strong> Goals and Action ItemsGOALSAND ACTION ITEMSThis section provides information on the process used to develop goals and action items thatpertain to the four natural hazards addressed in the <strong>Hazard</strong>s <strong>Mitigation</strong> Plan. It also describesthe framework that focuses the Plan on developing successful mitigation strategies. Theframework is made up <strong>of</strong> three parts: the Mission, Goals, and Action Items.MissionThe mission <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Glendale</strong>’s Natural <strong>Hazard</strong>s <strong>Mitigation</strong> Plan is to promote soundpublic policy designed to protect citizens, critical facilities, infrastructure, private property, andthe environment from natural hazards. This can be achieved by increasing public awareness,documenting the resources for risk reduction and loss-prevention, and identifying activities toguide the City towards building a safer, more sustainable community.GoalsThe Plan goals describe the overall direction that City agencies, organizations, and citizens cantake to minimize the impacts <strong>of</strong> natural hazards. The goals are stepping-stones between thebroad direction <strong>of</strong> the mission statement and the specific recommendations that are outlined inthe action items.Action ItemsThe action items are activities that City agencies, businesses and residents can be engaged toreduce risk. Each action item includes an estimate <strong>of</strong> the time line for implementation. Shorttermaction items are activities that City agencies may implement with existing resources andauthorities within one to two years. Long-term action items may require new or additionalresources or authorities, and may take between one and five years (or more) to implement.<strong>Mitigation</strong> Plan Goals and Public ParticipationThe Plan goals help to guide direction <strong>of</strong> future activities aimed at reducing risk and preventingloss from natural hazards. The goals listed here serve as checkpoints as agencies andorganizations begin implementing mitigation action items.Protect Life and Property• Implement activities that assist in protecting lives by making existing and proposed newhomes, businesses, infrastructure, critical facilities, and other property more resistant tonatural hazards.• Reduce losses and repetitive damages from chronic hazard events while promotinginsurance coverage for catastrophic hazards.• Improve hazard assessment information from which to make recommendations todiscourage new development in hazardous areas and encourage preventative measures2006 PAGE 4 - 1
