Natural Hazards Mitigation PlanCity of Glendale, CaliforniaSection 8 – Floodsmanagement zones, three tanks near the base of the San Gabriel Mountains are located withinthe State mandated Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zone for the Sierra Madre fault. Becausethese water tanks have a heightened risk of rupturing catastrophically during an earthquake onthe Sierra Madre fault, their inundation paths should be identified to evaluate whether or nothabitable structures are located within the floodway. The evaluation should also addresswhether these water reservoirs are self-contained. In the event of a catastrophic breakage, willthe water be contained within the site, or will it be discharged to a storm drain or channel orwill it pose a hazard to properties downstream?Because the entire city of Glendale is susceptible to strong seismic ground motion, all watertanks should incorporate new earthquake resistant designs, including flexible pipe joints.According to Glendale Water and Power, all steel water tanks in Glendale have been fitted withflexible joints that can accommodate some movement during seismic events, reducing thepotential for breakage of the pipes, leading to accidental releases of water.Map 8.3: Dam Inundation Areas in the City of Glendale2006 PAGE 8- 19
