Natural <strong>Hazard</strong>s <strong>Mitigation</strong> PlanCity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Glendale</strong>, <strong>California</strong>Section 7 – WildfiresThe <strong>Glendale</strong> Fire Department is party to an agreement that authorizes calls for emergencyresponse to be dispatched through the Verdugo Joint Fire Communications Center, whichcoordinates 33 different stations in the region. This “region” includes stations not only from<strong>Glendale</strong>, but also from Burbank, Pasadena, San Marino, South Pasadena, Monrovia, Arcadia,Sierra Madre and San Gabriel. The Verdugo Joint Fire Communications Center is located onthe third floor <strong>of</strong> Fire Station 21 in <strong>Glendale</strong>, at 421 Oak Street. Dialing 911 in any <strong>of</strong> the citiesserved by the Verdugo Fire Communications Center connects the caller to police or <strong>California</strong>Highway Patrol dispatchers, who determine the nature <strong>of</strong> the emergency, and transfer fire andparamedic calls to the Verdugo Communications Center. A dispatcher at Verdugo enters thepertinent details into the computer for transmittal via radio to the fire station that is dispatchedfor that particular incident. Emergency personnel are on the road within 1 to 2 minutes <strong>of</strong>receiving the call, and remain in constant radio contact with the Verdugo CommunicationsCenter as additional details are received.Numerous other agencies are available to assist the City if needed. Several Federal agencieshave roles in fire hazard mitigation, response, and recovery, including: the Fish and WildlifeService, National Park Service, US Forest Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service,Office <strong>of</strong> Aviation Services, National Weather Service, and National Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong>Foresters. The <strong>State</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Emergency Services can be called upon for further aid ifnecessary, as can Federal agencies, including the Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, the Department <strong>of</strong>the Interior, and, in extreme cases, the Department <strong>of</strong> Defense.
