The City of Glendale Engineering Department, Building and Safety Division enforcesbuilding codes pertaining to earthquake hazards. The City has adopted the provisions of themost current version of the California Building Code (CBC), with more restrictive amendmentsbased upon local geographic, topographic or climatic conditions. The City of Glendale, alongwith 55 other local jurisdictions, have worked together to make these amendments to theCalifornia Building Code consistent with the rest of southern California. Currently, Glendale’sBuilding and Safety staff are very active in the code development process and all regionalactivities to improve the technical provisions of the building code and the understanding of thepurpose of the building codes by the public. They participate in the Los Angeles RegionalUniform Code Program, (LARUCP), and promote the adoption of uniform amendments to theCBC by other local jurisdictions. The City of Glendale Planning Department enforces the zoning and land use regulationsrelating to earthquake hazards. Generally, these codes and regulations seek to discouragedevelopment in areas that could be prone to flooding, landslide, wildfire and / or seismichazards; and where development is permitted, that the applicable construction standards aremet. Developers in hazard-prone areas may be required to retain a qualified professionalengineer to evaluate level of risk on the site and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.2006 PAGE 6 - 56
