Keeping abreast of progressWhen you make a complaint, you will be told howyour complaint will be dealt with. Some problemsc<strong>an</strong> be resolved quickly. However, someenvironmental problems by their nature c<strong>an</strong> takea considerable amount of time to resolve. If youwould like to hear more about progress on yourcomplaint, please contact the relev<strong>an</strong>t localauthority or EPA office where you lodged yourcomplaint.ConfidentialityTo progress its investigation the local authority orthe EPA will, in m<strong>an</strong>y cases, need to be able tocontact you for further information or assist<strong>an</strong>ce.You will be encouraged to give your name <strong>an</strong>dcontact details, as investigating <strong>an</strong>onymouscomplaints c<strong>an</strong> be very difficult. You c<strong>an</strong> requestthat your name <strong>an</strong>d contact details be keptconfidential.In order to maintain a complete public record ofactivities relating to <strong>an</strong> EPA licensed facility/site, itis normal practice that complaint details aboutlicensed facilities are put on public file. Again, youc<strong>an</strong> request that your name <strong>an</strong>d contact details bekept confidential in which case your name <strong>an</strong>ddetails will be withheld from the public file.confidentialPlease note that information submitted to publicbodies is subject to the provisions of the Freedomof Information Acts 1997 <strong>an</strong>d 2003.Your role as a witnessFinally, in some inst<strong>an</strong>ces it may be necessary that acourt action be taken to resolve a problem. If this isthe case you may be asked to act as a witness <strong>an</strong>dto give sworn testimony.5
