2009 Maple Blues Awards,January 18th, 2010is, naturally, the music but there’s a truesense of fellowship that follows the progressof this relatively tiny industry each year, aswe all wish the best to those who tirelesslyplay – and live – the blues. It’s a relativelysmall club, but it’s clearly one built upon thecommon embrace of its membership. There’s no denying the sense of family that“Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable”.– Kenyan ProverbBrotherhood. There are many reasons for this. Ofcourse, times are tough – and we’re all sickof hearing it. MAPLE BLUES AWARDS cont’d from p 3together rather than keeps us apart. It’s agroup hug of the best order and this yearespecially, in light of cutbacks and industryshrinkage (as alluded to by presenter ChuckJackson), the hug was beyond therapeutic. Not quite brothers, but similar indemeanor, hosts David Gogo and DannyMarks did a more than entertaining job ofkeeping things rolling, ad-libbing their waythrough the program. Danny had, indeed, met his match in the equally fun-lovingGogo, who anteed up admirably with eachanimated detour from the script, providingan extra element of audience delight. Butthe spotlight was clearly on the winners, attractively framed by the stunninglybeautiful architecture of Koerner Hall’slush, wooden interior. Yes, the MBAs werea landslide for Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk with5 significant wins (Entertainer, Electric Act,Male Vocalist, Harmonica, Guitarist) but theband is beloved based on the heritage of itsmembers – hardly an overnight success andvery much a hard-working product born ofthe Canadian blues scene. And as someonerelatively new and fresh is ushered intothe fold, Jeff Healey – one of the pillars ofour blues community – was posthumouslyhonoured with Recording of the Year. Songsfrom the Road producer, Alec Fraser, wasthe ultimate recipient of this award on Jeff’sbehalf, having just survived a potentiallydisastrous illness. Who better to bask in thisglory with an acceptance speechto be long-remembered by all inattendance? In sickness and inhealth, as it goes, Fraser wenton to win Bassist of theYear – deservedly so.Just as the host band,The Maple BluesBand, has become amuch-loved stapleof the Toronto BluesSociety’s nationalblues awards, it wasequally fitting to hearshowcases from someof the country’s best musicians:Harry Manx, the Twisters, Clioand Paul Reddick, each turningin spectacular performanceswhile representing considerablerange in their individualtreatments of the genre. The theme of family wasagain driven home in thechoice of thisyear’s BluesWith A Feelingr e c i p i e n t –Chris Whiteley, ably presentedto him by hisbrother, Ken,and real-lifepartner, DianaBraithwaite. Chris and Dianaalso took home Songwritersof the Year awards as Chrisscooped up Horn Player, foradded icing for the cake. The community continuedto embrace long-time artistsalongside up-and-comers – from popularfavourites like Bucky Berger (Drummer),Suzie Vinnick (Female Vocalist) andMichael Fonfara (Keyboard) to NewArtist of the Year winners, the Blackburns, themselves the epitome of a family band.Following in the fine, funky footsteps oftheir popular father, Bobby Dean, thisclose-knit association of brothers arereaping the just rewards of the aptly-namedBrotherhood, a labour of love which speaksvolumes about their experience on bothsides of the music business. The selectionof Ed Torres as Blues Booster of the Yearmarks a significant moment in our bluescommunity. Both Ed and brother Frank haveworked above and beyond the call towardsestablishing Canada’s only all blues radiostation, 101.9 DAWG FM, launching June1st. This will provide a national communityof die-hard fans with a monumental meansof championing a distinctly Canadian bluesvoice on the world stage. As the parade ofwinners took their place on stage to performtogether to the delight of a rapt audience,it was obvious that this had been a year toremember – an uncommon celebration ofsimilarities and differences, fused togetherby a common love for the music: whereit’s been and where it’s going next. TheAfterparty in the lobby, featuring the musicof MonkeyJunk and a chance to schmoozeand mingle, provided an opportunity to revelin a year of very real accomplishments anda chance for everyone to place the events ofthe evening into a more personal context.- Story and photos by Eric Thom4 MapleBlues February 2010

TBS @ IBC: Beale Street felt like BloorStreet at the annual International Blues Challengein January with the number of Canadiansperforming, working, and visiting this year. TheToronto Blues Society sponsored Scott McCordand the Bonafide Truth and Alfie Smith toperform in the four day blues-off which attractedover 200 bands from 40 countries. Both Scottand Alfie were blown away by the musicianshipand sense of community throughout the weekand needless to say, attracted a large amount ofattention to their music.Scott initiated his two-month old daughter,Maya, to the blues by bringing her to Memphisand, alongside his wife Kelsey, walked her upand down Beale Street taking in the sounds of theblues and the history of the music. Julian Fauth,Harrison Kennedy, The Twisters, Blackburn,Jesse Green, are just a few of the Canadians whoperformed at the IBC but it was New Brunswick'sMatt Andersen who did Canada proud by winningthe Solo Act Challenge. IBC veterans JohnnyMax and Monkey Junk's multiple Maple BluesAward winner Steve Marriner both attended thisyear and provided a huge support system for allthe Canadian bands performing.Toronto's Richard Flohil was the KeynoteSpeaker and his speech became the tone of theweekend. He strongly urged musicians to movethe blues forward and to start taking this music innew directions. Torres thanked his brother and business partner Frank along with his wife Katewho dragged him out to every blues concert she could find. He also thanked his business partner Todd Bernardand the late Al Kirkaldy who supported the venture right to his final day, including appearing on one of DAWGFM’s presentation panels in front of the CRTC. “…we will light the flame thrower in June,” said Torres of theplanned DAWG FM launch date. It was impossible to find you.’” Carlsen gave the musician 40 copies of the CDand a portable CD player, while fellow musicianTrevor Brown gave Thompson a new acousticguitar. Carlsen and Thompson immediately wentdowntown and started playing together, with theCDs front and centre. “Everyone was saying,‘Wow, you have an album? I’ve been waitingyears for this,’ ” Carlsen said. Thompson hasbeen playing music on the streets of Victoria forthe last 20 years and Carlsen said local musiciansand blues aficionados have come to view him asan institution. That night alone, they sold about15 copies for $10 each, although a few peopleinsisted on giving Thompson $20. Carlsen hassold about 15 copies, and three music stores — theTurntable in Fan Tan Alley, Lyle’s Place on YatesStreet and Alloy Music in Langford — are alsoselling the CD. The couple of exceptionsinvolve songs of a more political nature. “CarryOn” & “Freedom Day” seem to stray a little toofar from what we’ve come to expect in terms ofsound but it’s certainly not difficult to agree withthe lyrics. These might be the ‘cabaret Soul/Blues’.“Easy Going Man” returns to form and “HarpSauce” is a funky instrumental. “Trouble In TheWorld No More” returns to a political theme butwith music much closer to what we’ve come toexpect and, I think, more successful because ofthat. “Big City Blues” adds a little reggae to themix, to great effect. “The Boogieman” is a partyCatl With the Lord for cowards you will find noplace Folk Brand/Electro-Fi/Outside MusicWith winning our Talent Search and makingthe cover of Now Magazine, Catl has certainlymade a splash. Their new album, also an LPprimarily, with a CD included, finally showcasesthe lineup that won the Talent Search. Sarah K(Kirkpatrick) was added after the first albumappeared early last year. Her contributions onkeyboards, co-vocals & percussion have addedconsiderably to their profile. The original lineupwas Catl (Jamie Fleming) on guitar & vocalsand Johnny LaRue on drums, giving them anobvious connection to such duos as the WhiteStripes or the Black Keys. Catl is more interestedin older forms of Delta blues than either of thoseand Sarah K’s addition moves them even furtherfrom that sound. They did however like the waythose early White Stripes albums were recordedand part of the new LP was recorded in Detroit,at Jim Diamond’s studio, where the early Stripesalbums were done. As with many early blues, thesongs here are built on drones, with Catl & SarahK each singing, not always in unison. There arethree acoustic songs, the rest electric. Eight of theten are original with “Goin’ Home” written byLightning Slim and “Oh Death” by CharleyPatton. Many will simply dismiss this music aspunk, which admittedly is where these musicianscame from but I think if you do that, you’ll missa lot. They’ve listened carefully and, volumenotwithstanding, much of their music has moreblues spirit and energy than many other recordingsthat are more accepted. Indeed, “Call Her Name”and “A Sun’s Grave” are gorgeous acoustic blues.“Oh Death” is a major performance and theMendelson Joe Live At Sixty-Five Old BoldMostly a visual artist since the breakup ofMcKenna Mendelson Mainline all those yearsago, he has put out the occasional collection ofsongs to show us that he has no intention of ceasingto be a curmudgeon. Recorded in Huntsville, notfar from his home in Emsdale, live off the floor, with his guitar and his foot for accompaniment, hetackles the issues he feels strongly about. Many ofthese topics don’t have much to do with the songtitle (“I’m A Folkie”) and many of them don’tconform to regular song structures but most ofyou already know that. A prime topic this timeis female companionship (“I’m Fussy”, “TheKiss Tells All” & “Dance With Joe”). The musicindustry takes a hit in “They Will Take YourPants”, society in general in “Going ThroughThe Motions” & “Some Dumb Machine”. “TheCanada Song” is surprisingly patriotic, with townsnicely name checked. Add in some personalcommentary and you’ve just enjoyed a delightfulforty minutes. A bonus track includes snippetsof the spoken introductions not used in the mainprogram. There are two new paintings here too,the cover and a landscape for your enjoyment. He’s not touring so you can get this one, and theothers, at www.mendelsonjoe.com.10 MapleBlues February 2010

Mike “Shrimp Daddy” Reid Messin’ WithMy System BeefySteve Marriner sure keeps himself busy. Heco-wrote, played on & produced this CD withShrimp Daddy, helping to make this harp man’ssecond CD a major step forward. Matt Sobb isonboard as well and if you think this might give ita Monkey Junk feel, you’d be right. Fortunatelythere’s a lot of room in the Chicago Blues tentand Shrimp Daddy’s forceful vocals ensure thatit remains his album. The songs Shrimp Daddywrote with Marriner are the strongest ingredientsin this mix, with more fresh ideas than might havebeen expected in this genre. Musically as wellthere’s a freshness to these songs that’ll keep it inyour player for some time.Mike Branton’s lead guitar rounds out theband, with Marriner on bass for the basic quartet.Marriner adds guitar or keyboards as needed.“Messin’ With My System” is a fine choice as thealbum title, a fast Little Walter-style romp thatfairly jumps from the speakers. “Rollin’ Nickels(for bread)” was a highlight of “Blowin’ BigBlues” but its re-write here puts it into a differentleague altogether - a very effective slow blues onhard times. The one non-original is hardly overworkedbut perhaps it should be. Jerry McCain’s“Next Door Neighbour”, an Excello single fromthe late ‘50’s, is a humourous description ofdomestic life that’s perfectly delivered. “I Don’tBelong” moves us into soul territory and ShrimpDaddy carries it off very well. My one reservationwith this CD is that a couple of the songs bringviolence rather close to the surface, so close thatit might make some listeners uncomfortable. Thatreservation in mind, this is one excellent disc.He sings in “Rollin’ Nickels” that he hopes thesounds in his head aren’t too derivative - I thinkhe’s making very good progress.Mike “Shrimp Daddy” Reid & Mike Brantonplay at a new blues venue in Milton, The HardballCafé, with Mojo Willie plus a special guest everyFriday night. You’ll be able to get the CD there. You can also contact him through his web site,www. shrimpdaddy1.tripod.com.Matt Andersen & Mike Stevens PiggybackBusted Flat/UniversalCongratulations go to Matt Andersen for hiswin at the IBC in the Solo/Duo category. He wassponsored by the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festivalin Fredericton, where he lives and I extend mycongratulations to them as well. Andersen doestravel here more often than many Maritimersthough and he & Mike Stevens recently debutedthis CD at Hugh’s Room. It certainly providesenough evidence for international recognition. They don’t always have as much fun as the CDcover implies but it certainly reflects the rapportthese two masters convey on this delightfulacoustic duo CD. “I Wanna Be A Floatplane”begins the CD, a blues that is rather more seriousthan it appears and announcing the fact that thereis more blues here than on other CDs by thisroots & rock musical hybrid. Or from Stevens forthat matter, who is not known as a blues player. His playing here leaves one wondering howthat perception came to be so proficient is he atplaying blues. All the songs here are credited toboth but “Livin’ In Sarnia” would appear to beMike’s primarily. It is also a bass harmonicafeature. “Devil’s Bride” is an even better blues. Thereally serious stuff begins with “Going Home”, aspoken word magnum opus on a soldier returninghome that should be played every RemembranceDay. “Storm’s Rollin’ In” uses the word ‘levee’,which immediately brings Katrina to mind butthe song could equally fit any natural disaster, ora relationship breakup. Magnificent harp fromStevens. “You’re A Best Seller Baby” ends theprogram on a blue note with Andersen on slide.Www.bustedflatrecords.com says that Andersenhas another CD out shortly.
