36<strong>Parks</strong> <strong>and</strong>L<strong>and</strong>scape<strong>Cambridge</strong> boasts some <strong>of</strong> Perth’s most beautiful openspaces including Lake Monger <strong>and</strong> Perry Lakes Reserves.The <strong>Town</strong> also maintains a magnificent stretch <strong>of</strong> coastlineincorporating Floreat <strong>and</strong> City beaches, a variety orrecreational <strong>and</strong> bushl<strong>and</strong> parks, l<strong>and</strong>scaped roadreserves <strong>and</strong> street trees.Lake Monger ReserveLake Monger Reserve, with a total lake area <strong>of</strong>71 hectares <strong>and</strong> a reserve area <strong>of</strong> 38 hectares,is one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong>’s major assets. It provides forpassive, active, <strong>and</strong> environmental/educationalpursuits for local residents <strong>and</strong> visitors. On theeast side <strong>of</strong> the lake, rehabilitation works continueto improve water quality, fauna nesting sites <strong>and</strong>visitor underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the wetl<strong>and</strong> ecosystem.Perry Lakes ReservePerry Lakes Reserve with a total area <strong>of</strong>57 hectares accommodates passive, active <strong>and</strong>environmental/educational pursuits. Adjacent toBold Park this reserve incorporates Alderbury sportsground <strong>and</strong> is the site for the annual Garden Weekevent. This regional event attracts visitors fromaround the State <strong>and</strong> provides displays <strong>and</strong> tips onall the latest gardening products <strong>and</strong> information.Water ManagementThe <strong>Town</strong> works within guidelines set down by theDepartment <strong>of</strong> Water for its use <strong>of</strong> ground water.In the last two years we have used less than ourallocation. This is due to the implementation <strong>of</strong>hydozoning (watering parks according to need)plus the introduction <strong>of</strong> ecozoning (replacingunutilised turf areas with native waterwise plants).


Coastal AreasThe <strong>Town</strong>’s 4.7 kilometres <strong>of</strong> coastline includesCity Beach Park, Floreat Beach Park, the Dunes,plus the well known <strong>and</strong> extremely popularswimming areas <strong>of</strong> City Beach <strong>and</strong> Floreat Beach.The area also boasts recreational activities suchas beach volleyball, surfing, fishing, <strong>and</strong> includespicnic areas, pedestrian walks <strong>and</strong> playgrounds.Biodiversity Action PlanThe <strong>Town</strong>’s first Biodiversity Action Plan has beendeveloped to protect the biodiversity <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong>’snatural areas. Rehabilitation works are undertakenin conjunction with various community groups.<strong>Cambridge</strong> Coastcare is a local group that workswith the <strong>Town</strong> in maintaining <strong>and</strong> enhancing theecology <strong>of</strong> the coastal dune system.The Roscommon Park Community group workswith the <strong>Town</strong> in maintaining <strong>and</strong> enhancing theecology <strong>of</strong> the Roscommon bushl<strong>and</strong>.Street TreesA good streetscape provides aesthetics <strong>and</strong> unitywithin a street as well as benefits such as shade,bird attraction, noise barriers <strong>and</strong> absorption<strong>of</strong> pollution. The <strong>Town</strong>’s 14,000 street trees aremanaged in accordance with the <strong>Town</strong>’s TreescapePlan 2010-2020, a copy <strong>of</strong> which canbe viewed on the website at www.cambridge.wa.gov.au/trees. It is important to recognisethat all trees within the verge area, outsideresidents’ property boundary (fence line) are theresponsibility <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong>, irrespective if theywere planted by the resident or the <strong>Town</strong>.The construction <strong>of</strong> tree houses <strong>and</strong> other privateequipment in street trees is not permitted.The <strong>Town</strong> has a street tree pruning program, wheretrees under power lines are pruned according toWestern Power’s pruning requirements. Trees arealso pruned for property boundary, pedestrianfootpath <strong>and</strong> roadway clearance.37
