NURTURING Child & YouthDevelopment6The <strong>YMCA</strong> nurtures the potential <strong>of</strong> childrenand youth by engaging young people andencouraging positive choices.At the <strong>YMCA</strong>, support for young people includes licensedchild care, before and afterschool programs, recreation,camp, leadership training and counseling. <strong>YMCA</strong> programsstimulate growing minds while immersing children in adynamic, caring and culturally diverse environment.<strong>2012</strong> HighlightsYouth Transitions ProgramThe <strong>YMCA</strong>'s Youth Transitions Program (YTP) is a free servicefocused on providing support to youth (aged 13-19) whoare facing barriers in their life. These barriers may be relatedto school, employment, peers, family, housing, addictionsor pregnancy. YTP <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> support programsspecifically designed to address particular challenges thatyouth face. In <strong>2012</strong>, 104 youth chose to access the program'sworkshops and one-to-one support, which helps youthcope with various life issues. 86% <strong>of</strong> youth surveyed said theyhad increased knowledge <strong>of</strong> life skills, and 100% surveyedindicated a desire to continue personal commitmenttowards education and employment goals.Virtual Y ProgramVirtual Y is a afterschool literacy program delivered throughthe <strong>YMCA</strong> within the community <strong>of</strong> Grande Prairie. Thepurpose <strong>of</strong> the program is to create an environment in whichchildren can feel safe, valued and heard. Delivered in an areawhere there are few resources or services available, VirtualY has helped children—many <strong>of</strong> whom have experiencedabuse and neglect in their lives—develop emotionally,socially, and academically. The Virtual Y depends on $80,000in annual community support to fund this program.Animal Friends: Horse VisitFor many <strong>of</strong> us, the opportunity to get up close with a realhorse is a rare event in our urbanized environment. In July,over 80 kids enjoyed a magical experience when Trifon andhis owner swung by the <strong>YMCA</strong>s for a visit. Besides getting topet and talk to Trifon, the kids also got the chance to colourand make horse masks during arts and crafts. In partnershipwith the <strong>YMCA</strong>, the Arabian Horse Reading Literacy Projectarranged the visits in an effort to spread awareness <strong>of</strong> theArabian horse to an audience unfamiliar with the breed, thegroup <strong>of</strong> children learned about grooming, feeding, and ahorse's anatomy.In <strong>2012</strong>106,305 hours <strong>of</strong> child care were providedby caring, nurturing and qualified staff.$41,578 Opportunity Fund support forchildren's Day Camp, allowing children to experience campwho could otherwise not afford the opportunity.9,651children learned aquatic life savingtechniques.2,714 children experienced day camp.154 youth gained valuable leadership skillsthrough the Leaders in Training program.1in 5Fast Factsor 10,000 people we serve will receive financialassistance.• Opened 7 new Child Care centres in <strong>2012</strong>.• 52% <strong>of</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> members are under 18 years <strong>of</strong> age.• Parents felt that <strong>YMCA</strong> Day Camps were a hugebenefit to their children in helping them formfriendships, develop important life skills and mostimportantly, have fun.• The Bridging the Gap youth employment programhad 37 graduates.
HEART OF THE COMMUNITY<strong>YMCA</strong> Welcome VillageLocated in the Boyle Street area <strong>of</strong> downtown<strong>Edmonton</strong>, the <strong>YMCA</strong> Welcome Village is avisionary partnership between the City <strong>of</strong><strong>Edmonton</strong>, the Province <strong>of</strong> Alberta, CapitalRegion Housing Corporation and the <strong>YMCA</strong>.It consists <strong>of</strong> the Melcor <strong>YMCA</strong> Village, a 150 unit affordablehousing building; the Shirley Stollery <strong>YMCA</strong> Child Care Centre,a home-like environment for children 12 months to six years;and the <strong>YMCA</strong> Family Resource Centre, a community supportfacility available to any individual, couple, or family.<strong>2012</strong> HighlightsMelcor Village NamingIn April, Melcor Developments, a real estate company withdeep roots in <strong>Edmonton</strong>, donated $1.5 million towardthe <strong>YMCA</strong> Welcome Village project. The generous gift,spearheaded by Melcor’s executive chairman Tim Meltonand CEO Ralph Young, helped the <strong>YMCA</strong> close a successful$4-million capital campaign. The <strong>YMCA</strong> Welcome Village’shousing centre was named the Melcor <strong>YMCA</strong> Village inhonour <strong>of</strong> Melcor’s contribution.Opening <strong>of</strong> the Stollery <strong>YMCA</strong> Child Care CentreIn August, the Shirley Stollery <strong>YMCA</strong> Child Care Centre openedits doors. Located in the heart <strong>of</strong> downtown, the centre is astate-<strong>of</strong>-the-art facility named in honour <strong>of</strong> Shirley Stollery,passionate philanthropist and joint founder <strong>of</strong> the StolleryCharitable Foundation. The centre is a home-like child carecentre for children twelve months to six years, providing asafe and nurturing environment for children to grow anddevelop cognitive, physical, emotional, and social skills. Thecentre features a connected outdoor play space as well asaccess to a child-friendly kitchen and a muck and guck roomwhere children can fully explore their creativity.Open House <strong>of</strong> the Boyle Street PlazaThe holiday spirit came alive this last Christmas as Boyle StreetCommunity members and <strong>YMCA</strong> staff, friends and supportersarrived at the opening <strong>of</strong> the Boyle Street Plaza. While achoir sang carols, visitors got to tour the centre and visit the<strong>YMCA</strong> Family Resource Centre, a community resource full <strong>of</strong>life-enriching services available to any individual, couple, orfamily. It’s a cardinal rule <strong>of</strong> leadership, and it applies evenmore to philanthropy. Tim Melton understands this truth andhas led—and inspired—others by example throughout hismore than four decades <strong>of</strong> involvement with the <strong>YMCA</strong>.As Executive Chair <strong>of</strong> Melcor Developments Ltd., Tim leadsa highly diversified, well-respected publicly traded businessthat has evolved from a real estate company started by hisgrandfather in 1923. Continuing a legacy <strong>of</strong> philanthropyestablished by his parents and grandparents, he also overseeshis family’s charitable foundation, which supports manycommunity organizations, including the <strong>YMCA</strong>.Tim has been a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>YMCA</strong>’s Board <strong>of</strong> Directorsand a board member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Edmonton</strong> Foundation,a position he holds to this day. In 2010, Tim became part<strong>of</strong> the capital campaign to build the <strong>YMCA</strong> WelcomeVillage, providing the lead gift through his company. INSPIRING Community LeadershipOur communities face urgent challengesrequiring immediate action. As a communityleader, the <strong>YMCA</strong> is in a position to buildhealthy communities and enrich the lives <strong>of</strong>children, youth, and families.Whether it’s supporting individuals with their health and wellbeing,encouraging child and youth development, orproviding opportunity for all, the <strong>YMCA</strong> has become aninfluential agent <strong>of</strong> positive change.In <strong>2012</strong>19,800 hours <strong>of</strong> service by <strong>YMCA</strong> volunteersdedicated to improving their local community.8,473 hours <strong>of</strong> supportive counseling serviceprovided through the Bill Rees <strong>YMCA</strong>.<strong>2012</strong> HighlightsStrategic PlanOver the past year, <strong>YMCA</strong> staff and Board members haveworked hard to renew the <strong>YMCA</strong>’s strategic plan, one thataddresses the needs <strong>of</strong> our changing community. Their hardwork and effort paid <strong>of</strong>f, and a new strategic plan for 2013–2016 was created. The plan identifies the many challengesnow facing our communities by focusing on four strategicdirections. It’s a bold and innovative approach that will helpfoster a <strong>YMCA</strong> better and stronger than ever.New ScholarshipTo honour the contributions <strong>of</strong> Franco and his wife, BarbaraSavoia, a fund has been established in their names to helpfulfill the dreams <strong>of</strong> young people and aid them in reachingtheir full potential. Franco believes that it is our responsibilityto be purposeful in our actions to assist others in reachingtheir personal best, and thus "Star-Building." The Franco andBarbara Savoia Star-Builder Scholarship Award is an annualscholarship for young people in the Melcor <strong>YMCA</strong> Villagewho plan to pursue post-secondary education.BrandingWith <strong>2012</strong> came a new facelift for Canadian <strong>YMCA</strong>s. Newbranding was introduced to give the <strong>YMCA</strong> a more youthful,more engaging image. Through this re-branding, Canadian<strong>YMCA</strong>s look forward to providing more focused programsand services that will be consistent across the country.Communication staff worked tirelessly over the last year tochange communication materials to meet the new standards.The result? A colourful, friendly, and vibrant new look for the<strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> Northern Alberta.1,415 children, youth and adults participate atthe Bill Rees <strong>YMCA</strong>.99% occupancy rate at <strong>YMCA</strong> Downtown Housing.365 days per year <strong>YMCA</strong> Downtown Housingprovided 24/7 housing and supports to the mostvulnerable members <strong>of</strong> our community.1in 5Fast Factsor 10,000 people we serve will receive financialassistance.• 51 <strong>YMCA</strong>s across <strong>Canada</strong> have joined togetherunder a new strategic plan and a common brandmessage in order to deliver more focused andconsistent service to members throughout thenation.• Over the past year Board and Staff have worked as acommitted team <strong>of</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> leaders to renew our localstrategic plan.10
Franco SavoiaFormer President & CEOPassionate about ending homelessness.On November 14, <strong>2012</strong>, family members, friends, andcommunity leaders gathered to celebrate the manyachievements <strong>of</strong> Franco Savoia, who would be retiring as thePresident and CEO after a long and distinguished career.Under Franco’s leadership, the <strong>YMCA</strong> has undergone manyremarkable changes: membership increased from 17,000 to25,000; the number <strong>of</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> Child Care Centres jumped from13 in 2000 to over 40; the Don Wheaton Family <strong>YMCA</strong> openedin 2007; and in <strong>2012</strong>, the $36.5 million <strong>YMCA</strong> Welcome Villagewas completed.Passionate about philanthropy and the health and well-being<strong>of</strong> others, Franco has always had a close affinity with his localcommunity, beginning his <strong>YMCA</strong> career as a communityworker in Toronto’s Little Italy. Helping to make the <strong>YMCA</strong>what it is today, Franco leaves an enduring legacy that willbenefit our <strong>Edmonton</strong> community for years to come.11
Katie HicksYouth Conference ParticipantWhere WestMeets EastA Senior Director <strong>of</strong> Child Care for the <strong>YMCA</strong>, Katie Hicks hadthe opportunity to participate in the <strong>YMCA</strong> Europe Catch theVision Youth Conference that was hosted in Istanbul, Turkey.The conference was the first <strong>of</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> Europe’s Roots forReconciliation initiative, which strives to increase internationalpeace building through youth relationships.The motto <strong>of</strong> the conference, “Where West Meets East,”underlined the importance <strong>of</strong> peace building between differentcultures. Listening to guest speakers who came from aroundthe world, Katie learned about cultural sensitivity and youthempowerment, and forged enduring relationships withinternational peers.Thanks to the conference, Katie now has a new outlook oninteracting with others: “Through experiencing the culture andconference, I recognized that although there are differencesamong us, we are all committed to our work in our localcommunities through the <strong>YMCA</strong>.”Now, back in <strong>Edmonton</strong>, Katie is looking forward to linking upwith friends made during the conference. With their support,she plans to establish pen pal relationships between childrenfrom the <strong>YMCA</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Edmonton</strong> and children from the <strong>YMCA</strong>s inEngland and Kosovo.13
