Jordan Smith...LIGHTS, SOUND, ACTION...In July 2012 Jordan beat competition fromacross the country to gain an apprenticeshipin Lighting & Sound at the prestigiousHoward Assembly Room at Opera North.Jordan studied with us on the ExtendedDiploma in Musical Theatre but took everyopportunity to develop technical theatreskills by supporting a whole host of studentshows staged in the Park Lane Theatre. It washis willingness to put in extra hours and todevelop new skills which led Jordan to gainthis fantastic career start.“I am very excited and privilegedto be given the opportunity to workwith professionals, and develop myskills within such a well-establishedenvironment. Based atthe internationally-renowned HeadingleyStadium, it provides all the food requirementsfor the diverse range of events hosted at thevenue plus weddings, parties and conferences.“Being an apprentice has been more than Iexpected,” said Ryan.“I’ve enjoyed all aspects of thetraining, getting a good grounding inbasic theory and being able to practiceskills at work. Olympic Success: The <strong>College</strong> washeavily involved with the London 2012Olympic Games, with students taking partin everything from carrying the Olympictorch, baking cakes for celebration events in<strong>Leeds</strong>, dancing to crowds on the relay route,and helping out as torch ambassadors.Team GB’s Nicola Adams (who becamethe first female boxer to win an Olympicgold medal in the Women’s Fly Final) was aformer student of <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> on theNational Diploma in Software Development.<strong>College</strong> Opens New Dining Destination:<strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> has joined up with TheFlannels group to open a restaurant in aprestigious city centre location. The FoodAcademy, on the third floor of Flannels,<strong>Leeds</strong>, showcases the <strong>College</strong>’s mosttalented students. On completing training,students who excel have the opportunity tosecure an apprenticeship at the restaurant,providing invaluable experience in aprofessional, high quality environment.Recently, the students have worked withMichelin-starred chef, Steve Smith.Sauce of Inspiration: The man behind ReggaeReggae Sauce, Levi Roots, shared the story ofhis rise to sauce super stardom with studentsat <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Levi visited the <strong>College</strong>’sThomas Danby Campus to chat to Hospitality& Catering and Business students about settingup and succeeding in business. His appearanceon the BBC’s Dragons’ Den brought both Leviand his Reggae Reggae Sauce to the public’sattention, with his sauce now stocked by majorretailers and the Levi Roots brand extendedacross a range of other products.Once in a Lifetime Experience: Studentsand staff from <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> receivedthe opportunity of a lifetime when they weregranted a private audience with His Holinessthe Dalai Lama during his visit to the city in2012. The Tibetan spiritual leader and NobelPeace Prize Laureate was in <strong>Leeds</strong> as the keynotespeaker at the Yorkshire International BusinessConvention (YIBC) <strong>Leeds</strong> 2012. 16-19 Study ProgrammesFrom 2013, all full-time 16-19 students will berequired to study English and Maths if theyhave not achieved a GCSE Grade C or abovein these subjects. FEES & FUNDING: 24+ LOANSLearners aged 24 and over and starting afurther education course on or after 1stAugust 2013 may qualify for a 24+ AdvancedLearning Loan. These loans help to pay thetuition fees charged by colleges and trainingorganisations. It’s easy to apply, and learnersdon’t have to pay anything back until theirincome is over £21,000 a year.FEES & FUNDING: Adult LearningGrant (ALG)The Adult Learning Grant scheme closed tonew applicants in July 2011. If you are over19 and on a low income, you can apply tothe Discretionary Learner Support Fund.FEES & FUNDING: Studying onBenefitsYou may be able to claim Job Seeker’sAllowance while studying provided thecourse covers no more than 16 hours perweek. You must also be actively seekingwork. Studying while you are on benefitscan be complicated but it is by no meansimpossible. Within the last coupleof years the electrical department hasbeen able to train students though our fulltime provision and progress them on to anapprenticeship programme with JTL studyingat <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>.The tutors in both campuses are qualifiedand experienced tradespeople, withover one hundred years of experienceworking in industry. The skills of theteaching teams cover almost all fields ofelectrical installation and engineering, fromdesigning and implementing multi-millionpound commercial electrical installations,to designing and constructing complexelectronic and PLC based systems.On all electrical courses the tutors useindustrial experiences to develop the skillsthrough theory and practice.
