Getting Ready for Your Colon Testwith GoLYTELYBe Sure You’re Ready for Your TestYour doctor has ordered a test to check yourcolon for any problems.Your colon must be empty and clean for the doctorto see.If your colon is not clean and empty we will notbe able to do the test.Read this whole handout right away and do eachstep inside very carefully.1 to 2 Weeks Before Your TestMake plans for someone to drive you to andfrom the clinic. We cannot let you leave if youare alone.Driver:Phone:Plan to take off work the day of your test.You will be sleepy and forgetful after your test.Call your insurance company. Time Before Your TestFor 7 <strong>Day</strong>s Before Your TestDon’t take any of these medicines:IbuprofenMotrinAdvilCelebrexNaprosynPiroxicamAleveAsk your doctor when to stoptaking these (if you take them):Plavix (clopidoquel)HeparinLovenox (enoxaparin)Coumadin (warfarin)Other blood thinnersAlka SeltzerPepto BismolGinko BilobaIronHerbal supplementsFish oilFor 3 <strong>Day</strong>s Before Your TestDo not eat any nuts or corn.Do not eat any seeds or foodsthat have seeds in them, likeberries, tomatoes or cucumbers.Shop for these things at yourdrug or grocery store:Your GoLYTELY prescription(1 bottle) Flavor packets are okay. Dulcolax LAXATIVE (Bisacodyl 5mg) tablets. Generic is okay.A supply of liquids (see the list ofwhat’s OK to drink on the next page)You may also want these:Baby wipes and A&Dointment (in case you get sore).It’s OK to keep taking these:Blood pressure medicinesAspirin 81mg (baby)Heart medicinesSeizure medicinesDepression medicinesAnti-viral medicinesBirth control pillsMultivitamins (NO IRON)DO NOT FOLLOWTHE INSTRUCTIONS ON THEBOTTLE OF GOLYTELY


<strong>Day</strong> Before Your TestDo Not Eat Any Food Today!No Breakfast, No Lunch, No Dinner, No Snacks!When You Wake UpStart the “liquid” diet. Drink at least2 glasses (16 ounces total) of liquidsevery hour while you are awake.It’s OK to drink:Sprite, 7Up, ginger ale, Pepsi Cola,Coca Cola, Root Beer, Dr. PepperApple juice, white cranberry juice,white grape juice (no red or purple)Crystal Light yellow lemonade,yellow or orange GatoradePlain beef or plain chicken brothPlain coffee and tea, with sugarif you likeDo NOT drink:Anything red, green, blue orpurpleAlcohol, milk, orange juice, tomatojuice, or any fruit juice or vegetablejuice with pulp (little pieces) in itAt 4:00 p.m.Take 4 Dulcolax LAXATIVE (Bisacodyl5mg ) tablets (a total of 20 mgs).Keep drinking two (2) glasses ofliquids every hour.Mix GoLYTELY in the large bottle byfilling it with water. Shake it well andplace it in the refrigerator.At about 6:00 p.m.Start drinking the GoLYTELY.Drink a full glass every 10-15 minutesuntil it is all gone. Keep drinking allthe mix even if your stool (poop) isclear or yellow.Stay close to your toilet the rest ofthe day and the night! Expect a lotof diarrhea.Use baby wipes and A&D ointmentto help with soreness.Having a Hard TimeDrinking All the Mix?Feel sick to your stomach? Take a 30-minute rest. Or try small sips of Coca-Cola. Then start drinking again.Do Not Drink After Midnight!3

Youwill be sleepy and forgetful after yourtest.It’s OK to take any of these medicineswith one sip of water but not food:Blood pressure medicinesHeart medicinesSeizure medicinesDepression medicinesAnti-viral medicinesPlease arrive 30 minutes before your appointmenttime to check-in.Your driver must check in with you.You will be groggy and not able to driveuntil the next day. When you go homeyou may not walk or leave by taxi, bus,or bicycle.
