ApplicationNoteRiceSize measurement of broken grainsApplicationSince rice is abasic foodstuff, its productquality has tobe controlledcarefully.Particle size analysis and control of theproduct appearance is carried out inalmost every plant, as the size and shapenot only influence the taste or appearanceof the final products, but are alsoimportant indicators for the productionprocess itself.Demands of quality assuranceISO 7301 (EN) describes the specificationsfor rice, and the analysis methods tocontrol these specifications. Besides testsfor moisture, odour, and detection ofimpurities and insects, the average sizeand the amount of broken grains is ofcritical interest. Additionally the price andthe customs duties depend for example onthe amount of broken,malformed/misshapen, or chalky kernels.ISO 7301 describes manual procedures tomeasure the average size of the ricegrains by using a micrometer (calliper),and to determine the amount of brokenkernels. This procedure is labourintensive, provides rather unreliablestatistics (only a few kernels areanalysed), and is very subjective(influenced by operator).SolutionWith the CAMSIZER it is possible toanalyse the average length of the ricegrains and the amount of broken kernelsfully automatically, independent ofoperator errors, and with high speed forsignificant amounts of sample. The CAMSIZER delivers reliable, reproducible and fast results in fullcompliance with the handmeasurement as specified in thestandard ISO 7301 (see Fig. 1).Equipped with an AutoSampler theCAMSIZER is able to measure approx. 900samples per week. The instrument canalso be integrated in the productioncontrol and can be operated 24/7. TheAutoSampler allows even untrainedoperators to analyse samples fromdifferent places in the production easilyand frequently, by using barcodes todistinguish different sample types. Thespeed and quantity of the measurementsreduces rejects and waste, and helps tocontrol the production parameters.Fig. 1.Comparison ofhand (blue) andCAMSIZER ® (red)measurement of one typeof rice.Other types (wild rice, carnaroli etc.) show thesame compliance.

ApplicationNoteCAMSIZER ® - Benefits at a glance• much faster than hand measurement (x100)• identical results to hand analysis• larger samples quantities provide better statistics• high sample throughput• more objective• less manpower required• works for all tested types of rice• Fully automated, with AutoSampler• counting: almost correct number of grains(within 10%)• larger sample quantities provide better statistics• excellent reproducibility• easy to use, different software levels enableoperation by unskilled personnel• maintenance free, robust designFig. 2CAMSIZER ® with AutosamplerFig. 3CAMSIZER ® :two camera system© Retsch Technology GmbH • Rheinische Strasse 43 • 42781 Haan • Germany •phone: +49 2129 5561-0 • fax: +49 2129 5561-87 • e-mail: technology@retsch.depage 2/3

ApplicationNoteMeasuring PrincipleThe patented measuring setup of theCAMSIZER – two digital cameras as anadaptive measuring unit – improves andoptimises particle analysis by digital imageprocessing. Therefore, it is possible tomeasure a wide range of particles from30 μm to 30 mm with extreme accuracy, without having to switch measuringranges or make adjustments. Thesample is fed in from the feed channel sothat all particles fall through themeasurement field. During themeasurement procedure the two digitalcameras (CCD) perform different tasks. The basic camera (CCD-B) records largeparticles, the zoom camera (CCD-Z) records the small ones. The contact-free opticalmeasurement is carried out in real time and simultaneously obtains all the requiredinformation about particle size and particle shape. A modularly configurable onlineversion of the instrument has been developed to allow automated measurements to beconducted continuously. For further information please visit our website www.retsch-technology.com or contact uspersonally:Retsch Technology GmbHRheinische Str. 43 Phone: +49 (0) 21 29 / 55 61 – 042781 Haan E-Mail: technology@retsch.comGermanyOur International Sales manager will be happy to help you with any inquiry you mayhave:Mr Gert Beckmann Phone: +49 (0) 21 29 / 55 61 – 196E-Mail: G.Beckmann@retsch.comMr Jörg Westermann Phone: +49 (0) 21 29 / 55 61 – 173E-Mail: J.Westermann@retsch.com© Retsch Technology GmbH • Rheinische Strasse 43 • 42781 Haan • Germany •phone: +49 2129 5561-0 • fax: +49 2129 5561-87 • e-mail: technology@retsch.depage 3/3
