From the ChancellorAs we complete our 99th year and move toward our CentennialCelebration, I continue to be reminded of the unique role this institution plays in thefabric of the state and region. As has been the case throughout our history, a majority ofthe Class of 2008 became the first members of their families to earn college degrees. UAMprovided the opportunity, as it has for almost a century.People like Gerald Majors, our 47th Distinguished Alumnus, are a part of that legacyof opportunity. Mr. Majors earned his degree in 1961, forged a successfulcareer in business, and is now giving back to his alma mater through hisown generosity and that of the Trinity Foundation, which he serves as amember of the board of directors. Thanks to Mr. Majors and the TrinityFoundation, UAM has a $340,000 endowment to provide scholarships tofuture generations of students, a critical need in an era of rising costs. If you’ve been to the campus lately, you’ve probably seen a lot oforange plastic fencing and piles of dirt, so please pardon our progress. Wecurrently have two major construction sites on campus. The renovationof two historic buildings – Wells Hall and Sorrells Hall – is nearingcompletion. Renovation should be finished in late October or earlyNovember and both buildings will be operational for the 2009 springsemester. We are also well underway in expanding the press box andadding chair-back seating to Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium. Site preparation is nowcomplete and steel will soon begin to rise above the north end zone for our new indoorpractice facility. You can watch the progress of our stadium projects on our athletic website(www.uamsports.com).As is usually the case this time of year, we say goodbye to old friends. Long-timefaculty members Joe Guenter, David Koskoski, Russell Nordeen and Boris and ElizabethZeide are retiring after distinguished careers. We are also excited to welcome new staffmembers, including Dr. Katherine Berry, who recently joined our administrative team asvice chancellor for advancement. Dr. Berry will be leading our alumni and developmentcomponents. We encourage you to make an investment to become more involved as welook to a new century of opportunity. As we look back at nearly 100 years of a rich and storied history, we are excited aboutour future. The outlook for enrollment next fall appears to be positive with increasingnumbers from the region’s high schools. We are in the process of planning a variety ofactivities for our Centennial Celebration. On CampusIT’S NOT SOILDr. Robert Ficklinholds his syntheticsoil substitute(left) and real soil(right).UAM MAGAZINEThe DirtDoctorOHappy TrailsTne of the indicators of globalclimate change may be fluc-tuations in the levels of carbon andnitrogen in soils of agricultural andforest lands resulting from increasesin greenhouse gas emissions. To measure carbon and nitrogenchanges, scientists need standard soilsamples — samples that have beenanalyzed by multiple laboratories andcertified as having a specific concentrationof certain elements — inorder to calibrate their equipment andassure quality control during carbonand nitrogen analysis. When laboratories around theworld began experiencing a shortageof certified soil samples in 2004, Dr.Robert Ficklin came up with a solution.Ficklin, a professor in UAM’sSchool of Forest Resources, and Dr.Russell Dresbach, supervisor of theMissouri Soil Characterization Laboratoryat the University of Missouri, developed a synthetic compound thatbehaves like a mineral soil during drycombustion analysis. The compoundis now being used as a substitute forthe standard soil samples, which arein such short supply. There are a number of problemsassociated with certifying a soilstandard, which helped contribute tothe shortage, explains Ficklin. “First, the process is time consuming andexpensive, since results from multiplelabs are required to show consistencyin the measured carbon and nitrogen,”he says. “Once a quantity ofsoil has gone through a certificationprocess, there is still the issue of alimited quantity. There are many labshe Spatial Analysis Laboratory (SAL) in the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s School of Forest Resourceshas been selected to receive the Director’s Special Commendation from the Arkansas Department of StateParks for providing mapping technology for the Cane Creek Lake State Park hiking and biking trail.Dr. Robert Weih, professor of forestry and SAL director, assisted Cane Creek Lake State Park in acquiring grants, determining the trail location and producing the trail brochure, the first color hiking and biking brochure produced bythe State Park system. The 15-½ mile multi-use trail was created through a partnership between the Arkansas State Parks, ArkansasGame and Fish Commission, and the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. More than 550 volunteers, including members of AmeriCorps and the Boy Scouts, along with Arkansas State Parks staff built the trail over athree-year period. Thetrail has 47 bridges, includingthree suspensionbridges. It is oneof the longest hikingand biking trails insouthern Arkansas.ON THE TRAIL Dr.Robert Weih, at thebeginning of a trailhe helped blaze.analyzing soil carbon and nitrogen,so high demand with limited supplyresults in high costs for certifiedstandards, if they are even available.”Ficklin and Dresbach firstdiscussed the possibility of a shortageof certified soils in the mid-1990s.When the problem became acute in2004, they went to work and createda compound that behaves like a certifiedmineral soil and proved suitablefor quality control and equipmentcalibration. “This compound is not asynthetic soil and will not behave likea soil in most ways,” Ficklin says.“As a soil scientist, I have to emphasizethat this compound does notmeet the definition of soil, but it is asurrogate for certified soil standardsduring combustion analysis, which isconducted very frequently.”Scientists across the U.S. are usingthe compound in place of certifiedsoil samples, including researchersat the Universities of Washington,Maine and Missouri as well as PennState, Virginia Tech, UAM, and theU.S. Forest Service Hydrologic Lab.According to Ficklin, the compoundis relatively easy to make andlow in cost in comparison with certifiedsoil samples. “With the interestin global climate change, measuringchanges in soil and plant carbon andnitrogen is a component of many researchprojects,” Ficklin says. “Also, the new interest in biofuels and biomassproduction for biofuel feedstockwill require the analysis of changesin soil chemistry, and carbon andnitrogen are two important elementsthat will be analyzed.“The creation of this compoundand its validation through a blindtesting process provides researchersand laboratory managers with the abilityto create calibration and qualitycontrol check standards with carbonand nitrogen concentrations similarto the concentrations found in thesamples that they are analyzing. Thesafety and low cost associated withthe compound also translates to lowcost and high efficiency.”

When UAM’s 47th Distinguished Alumnus enrolled atArkansas A&M, he was ready to hit the ground running. It was 1958 and GeraldMajors was a young man ina hurry. When they toldme I’d been selected DistinguishedAlumnus, I was surprised, but veryhonored.”Gerald Majors’ story is not unlikethose of many UAM graduates. ForMajors, the Monticello school representedopportunity.“I wasn’t the best student duringhigh school,” he says. “I did not applymyself as I should have.”Barely 17 when he graduated fromStar City High in 1954 and short onoptions, Majors looked to the military.“My father had died unexpectedlythe summer before I graduatedhigh school,” Majors remembers. “Ithought going into the service was mybest chance to a better future. I wouldgo to college when I got out.”Majors planned to join the Navy, but when he went to Pine Bluff to seethe Navy recruiter, he wasn’t there. Not to be dissuaded, Majors went nextdoor to the Air Force recruiter. “Mymother had to sign the enlistment papersbecause I wasn’t 18 yet,” Majorssays. After 46 months in the Air Force,Majors enrolled first at ArkansasTech, then transferred to ArkansasA&M after two semesters. It’s a decisionhe never regretted.“I owe much to my experience atA&M,” says Majors. “Everyone wasso willing to be helpful. The professorsreally worked at helping thestudents get through classes. Theywanted us to be successful.”Majors married his high schoolsweetheart, Marion Sue Morrison,in 1959 and received his bachelor’sdegree from A&M in 1961, graduatingwith honors. He began his career with the PineBluff accounting firm of Walter Theisand Company, becoming a certifiedpublic accountant. Gerald’s quick mindfor grasping a new or challenging situationis fantastic. We are extremelyproud of Gerald’s receiving recognitionfor his accomplishments.”Majors semi-retired from thecompanies in 2002 but continues towork a reduced schedule, primarily oncompany matters that do not requireattention on a day-to-day basis. Heis also involved with the companies’charitable organization, the TrinityFoundation, which he serves as treasurerand as a member of the board ofdirectors. He is also a member of theboards of both the UAM FoundationFund and the University of ArkansasFoundation. The Trinity Foundation recentlypresented the third of three $100,000gifts to the UAM Foundation Fund tocreate an endowed scholarship fund inthe name of Gerald and Sue Majors. The endowment will generate scholarshipsfor graduates of Star City HighSchool.“Gerald and Sue Majors mean alot to this institution,” says UAMChancellor Jack Lassiter. “Throughtheir generosity and the generosityof the Trinity Foundation, they havecreated a legacy of opportunity thatwill continue for generations of futurestudents.”Praise often makes Majors uncomfortableand he is quick to deflectthe attention to others. Now living inWhite Hall, just north of Pine Bluff,Majors is content to spoil his threegrandchildren and spend time outdoorson property he owns in LincolnCounty.“I have to give credit to others,”Majors says. “Any success attributedto me is the result, in large part, ofhaving worked and associated withpeople who have been very helpfuland supportive, and who have madethe opportunities available to me.Without question, the support andencouragement given by my wife hasbeen invaluable to me.”Spring-Summer 200811

As the programhas grown in stature, so has its roleas a Center for Excellence in theUniversity of Arkansas System, asa leader in forestry research, and inextension programs that reach everycorner of the state.“The University of Arkansasprogram centered at UAM includesboth the School of Forest Resourcesand the Arkansas Forest ResourcesCenter. The Forest ResourcesCenter also hosts field days at variouslocations around the state, designedprimarily to help private landownersbetter manage their timber. Last year,UAM hosted field days in Hope andBatesville to teach landowners howto recover land after a timber harvest. The University also offers shortcourses, both on campus and aroundthe state, for professional forestersand landowners in areas such as pointsampling, a forest inventory techniquethat is faster than conventionalmethods of inventory, and geographicimaging systems. Last year, UAMhosted a Teacher ConservationWorkshop for public school teachersin conjunction with the ArkansasForestry Association.UAM forest scientists are alsoinvolved in an Urban Storm WaterInitiative to help Arkansas communitiesdeal with storm water run-off, anurban environmental problem createdby water containing oil, pesticidesand chemicals. Dr. Philip A. Tappe, professor and associate dean of theSchool of Forest Resources, and Dr. Hal Liechty, professor offorestry, are conducting the research.Tappe’s research, conducted with faculty members Dr. MatthewPelkki, Dr. Robert Ficklin, and Liechty, examines the impactof turning post-logging forest residues, known as slash, intocellulosic biomass for biofuel production.According to Tappe, cellulosic ethanol, made largely fromlogging waste, has the potential to replace 30 percent of U.S. petroleumuse. “Pine plantations produce the majority of harvestedforest volume in the South,” says Tappe, “ and are projected toincrease 53 percent in area by 2050. Projections estimate thattwo-thirds of the national softwood harvest will occur on plantationsthat cover 20 percent of the U.S. forest base. Clearly, pineplantations have an important role in producing biofuel.”There are drawbacks, Tappe says. Whole-tree chipping, which includes the removal of all above-stump biomass, mayhave detrimental impacts on site productivity and ecosystems.“Forest harvesting can reduce the base saturation of soils and thisintensifies with the amount of biomass removed,” Tappe explains.“Whole-tree harvesting can also reduce cycling of soil carbon, which modify soil properties and reduce future productivity.”Liechty’s research examines the suitability of the Lower MississippiAlluvial Valley for large-scale biofuel feedstock production.Liechty says the Lower Mississippi Valley’s high rainfall, longgrowing season, central location, and well-developed agricultureinfrastructure make the region well suited for biofuel production. But not without tradeoffs.According to Liechty, production of common biofuel feedstockssuch as corn and soybeans require significant inputs of fertilizer, pesticides and water for irrigation while doing little for waterquality protection, wildlife habitat, or carbon sequestration.According to Liechty, a better method for biofuel feedstockproduction may involve reforestation of marginal agriculturallands in an area once dominated by forests and turning theseagroforests into flexible and innovative cropping systems andecosystems. “Agroforest systems composed of varying mixturesof feedstock species, such as cottonwood trees and switchgrass, have the potential to provide a suite of ecological servicesalong with the high cellulosic biomass production to meeta variety of management objectives, social constraints, andsoil and site conditions,” said Liechty.Spring-Summer 200813
