Definition of cloud
computing ti
Cloud computing is Internet ("cloud") based development and use of computer
technology ( ("computing") computing ). It is a style of computing in which dynamically
scalable and often virtualised resources are provided as a service over the
Internet. Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the
technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them
Gartner defines cloud computing as a style of computing in which massively
scalable IT-related capabilities are provided "as a service" using Internet
technologies to multiple external customers.
“..the Enterprise Cloud offers our
customers more flexibility and agility over the traditional server based model,
allowing a o g for o a precise p ec se and a d dynamic dy a c aallocation ocat o of o computing co put g resources esou ces as
Is cloud computing really new? Yes, and no.
Cloud computing is a new consumption
and delivery model inspired by consumer
Internet services services. Cloud computing exhibits
Usage
the following 5 key characteristics:
•On-demand self-service
•Ubiquitous network access
•Location independent resource pooling
•Rapid Rapid elasticity
•Pay per use
While the technology is not new new, the end
user focus of self-service, self-management
leveraging these technologies is new.
 Key features:
– Scalabilityy
– Automatic/rapid provisioning
– Standardized offerings
– Consumption-based pricing.
– Multi-tenancy

Why use the cloud
• Flexible IT – from test and dev through to full product
• Dynamic requirements – seasonal and ‘peaky’
demand
• Take advantage of service providers economies of
scale
Best technologies at affordable price
• No access to capital – pay as you go/grow
• Cant do it internally – no skills or no spare resource
• Software + Services
