First-Year Conference 2011All University faculty, staff and administrators were invited toparticipate in the bi-annual Focusing on the First-Year Conference.Over 300 people had the opportunity to talk and strategize aboutacademic and student development issues relating to first-yearstudents. This conference was held at Coffman Memorial Union onthe University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus on Feb. 16, 2011.We shifted the date from October 2010 to allow more flexibility withan advising and career retreat. Keynote speaker and special guestShane J. Lopez, Ph.D. was research director and a member of thefounding board of directors for the Board of Directors for the CliftonStrengths School. OFYP CommunicationsThe new student experience is very complex,requiring numerous tasks to be completed andinformation to be digested well before the first dayof classes. Adding to the confusion is the absenceof one central point of communication. Thisincludes web, email, portal technology, socialnetworking, and print communication.OFYP works closely with all undergraduatecolleges and University departments to ensurequality communication that complements thegreater strategic communication efforts of theOffice of Undergraduate Education, the Officefor Student Affairs, and the University ofMinnesota, Twin Cities.39
