2Message from the Head Referee:METLIFE IRONMAN <strong>70.3</strong> COZUMEL will operate under the “three strikes and you’re out” principle.Even though DRAFTING is the only violation that incures a time penalty (to be served in the nearest penalty tentat various spots on the <strong>bike</strong> <strong>course</strong> ); any type of violation counts toward your three strikes.For example:1. DRAFTING violation (four minutes served in a <strong>bike</strong> <strong>course</strong> penalty tent)2. HELMET CHINSTRAP violation3. LITTERING violation – a third violation results in disqualification (DQ)Again, any combination of the three rule violations will result in a DQ. To maximize your understanding of therules on race day, please take the time to read and understand the following summary of Position Violations.• Always ride on the right side of your lane to avoid an ILLEGAL POSITION or BLOCKING call• Keep four <strong>bike</strong> lengths (7 meters) between your <strong>bike</strong>’s front wheel and the rear wheel of the cyclist in frontof you to avoid a DRAFTING call• Always pass on the left of the cyclist in front of you, never on the right to avoid an ILLEGAL PASS call• Complete your pass within 20 seconds to avoid a DRAFTING call• If passed, drop back four <strong>bike</strong> lengths before attempting to re-pass to avoid an OVERTAKING orDRAFTING callA Triathlon is an individual event, and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules in order to avoidpenalties. In the case of Position Violations, the judges´ ruling is final and is not open to protests or appeals.The following are several other common rule violations:• HELMET CHINSTRAP—the chinstrap of your helmet must be securely fastened whenever you are onyour <strong>bike</strong> on race day!• RACE NUMBER—you must display your race number during the <strong>bike</strong> and run portions of the race, andyour <strong>bike</strong> number must be properly attached to your <strong>bike</strong> and be visible.• LITTERING—do not throw away ANYTHING outside of official aid stations!• UNAUTHORIZED EQUIPMENT—sorry, absolutely no cell phones, MP3 players, Oakley Thumps, iPodsor other audio listening devices!• OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE—do NOT accept any assistance from anyone other than a race official, and doNOT have non-racers ride or run alongside you!You must go to a penalty tent for any violation to have your number marked, and all violations counttoward your three strikes. There will be no penalty tents on the run. If you are penalized on the run,the official will mark your number on the spot.Please remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and your judges with respect and to be considerate. 6ATHLETE WRISTBANDA wristband will be fixed to your wrist at athlete check-in. This band will identify you as an official participantand must be worn during the event days. The wristband allows you access to the carb dinner, transition areaand post-race athlete recovery area. You will not be allowed to remove your bicycle and/or gear from thetransition area following the race without your wristband fixed to your wrist. Please do not remove yourwristband until after the awards ceremony.ATHLETEPERSONAL SAFETYAlways train with at least one other person (especially in the open water). While swimming, please wear abrightly colored swim cap and ensure that your family members and/or friends know where you are.When training, please <strong>bike</strong> and run on the hard shoulder without moving into the traffic lane. Please becourteous and aware that the people sharing the roads with you are people you will count on during race dayto fulfill your physical and emotional needs. RACE DAYINFORMATION


10RACE DAY PARKINGThe Chankanaab parking lot will be used astransition area 1 so there will not be any parkingspace availableinside the park. Parking on the road is strictlyprohibited, so please use the host hotel´stransportation or a taxi to get there.The only way for spectators to get to the Finish lineat City Hall and where transition area 2 is, will be totake the free event transportation departing from8:40 a.m. from Chankanaab or to take a taxi.RACE MORNINGCLOTHES BAGPrior to the swimming start on race morning, place any items(e.g., dry clothes, hotel room key, meds) you may need afteryou finish, in your race morning clothes bag. The racemorning clothes bag drop buses will be clearly marked andwill be located inside the transition area. Please do not placeany valuables in your race morning clothes bag. During therace your race morning clothes bag will be transported to thetransition 2 area next to the <strong>Cozumel</strong> City Hall for you tocollect after the race.RACE MORNINGCHECK-IN PROCEDUREThe transition area will open at 5:30 a.m. on raceday. Plan to arrive early. Be sure to take intoaccount the 15-minute walk from the transition areato the swimming start area.If you need to be marked with your number again,this will begin at 5:30 a.m. at the transition 1entrance. You will not be permitted into theswimming start area on race day without yourwristband, swim cap, timing chip and your bodymarked with your number. If you have misplacedany of these items, please go to the support tentinside the transition area for a replacement. Do notapply sunscreen, oil, Vaseline or lotion until afteryour body has been marked.


11WARM-UP AND START LINEThere will NOT be an opportunity to warm up in the water prior to the start of the race.All the athletes will have to warm up inside the designated area; every athlete must be out of the water atleast 15 minutes before their respective start. It will not be permitted to warm- up inside the swimming<strong>course</strong>; doing so can result in disqualification.All competitors will be called to the pre start holding area15 minutes before their start. From there, you willwalk into the water. All athletes must be marked with their number before entering this zone. If you need anew number marking on your body, you can have it done under the tents at the athlete´s area next to thestart-line holding area. Course summaryBIKE COURSE – 56 MILESThe <strong>bike</strong> <strong>course</strong> is flat and paved and it starts at the CHANKANAAB parking lot (T1), and finishes at T2 next to<strong>Cozumel</strong>’s City Hall in the heart of downtown. You´ll have to complete 1.3 laps along the Highway around theIsland in a counter clockwise direction. Every lap will go by the City Hall, between T2 and the finish line.Upon leaving T1 at Chankanaab Park, turn right on the <strong>Cozumel</strong> highway for about 12 miles towards the southside of the Island (Punta Sur). At this point you will continue towards the north for about 9 miles right next to theocean, with strong cross winds until you reach the junction with Juarez Ave. You will see a place called(Mezcalitos), where you will turn left and go straight until you reach 30th Ave. Here you´ll turn left and go straightto 11th street, turn right towards City Hall to complete lap 1 and then go towards Chankanaab park, pass it andgo straight until the Iberostar hotel where you will turn back to City hall and you will have finished this beautiful <strong>bike</strong>ride.The entire <strong>course</strong> is flat and the pavement is in perfect condition.Aid Stations on the <strong>course</strong> will keep the atheletes fueled.** Important: Due to the strong cross winds during a portion of the <strong>bike</strong> segment, the use of disc wheels will bestrictly forbidden, please take this into consideration to select your racing wheels. 15BIKE SHIPPINGThere is not an official service provider of <strong>bike</strong> transportationfor this event.If you decide to take your <strong>bike</strong> with you and in orderto avoid inconveniences with Mexican customs, westrongly recommend taking it as part of yourbaggage and NOT shipping it.Most airlines recommend that you use the followingprocedures when transporting your<strong>bike</strong>:• Pack your <strong>bike</strong> as if you were shipping a carton ofeggs. Do everything you can to ensure damage-freedelivery.• Label your <strong>bike</strong> case clearly with your name,address, etc., so it can be identified quickly.• If you plan to arrive in <strong>Cozumel</strong> immediately beforethe <strong>bike</strong> check in, you risk havingyour <strong>bike</strong> arrive after you do.Plan ahead!BIKE TECH SERVICESThe official <strong>bike</strong> shop and technical provider of theevent will open their event store and tech servicecenter at Punta Langosta Shopping Center, hosthotels and transition area. They will be staffed byexpert <strong>bike</strong> technicians and stocked with great dealson a variety of merchandise (tires, tubes, CO2, andmore).Please look at the event official program for servicedates and times.TECH TIPS & OTHERDETAILSBike tuning will not be provided at <strong>bike</strong> check-in, althoughtechnicians will be available. Athletes are ultimatelyresponsible for their own <strong>bike</strong>s. However, race officialsmay, at their discretion, make final judgment as to thesoundness of the <strong>bike</strong>s.Prior to mandatory <strong>bike</strong> check-in on Saturday, be sureyour bar-end plugs are in place and you have no loosespokes, brakes, headsets, stripped cables, etc. Adjustthe hubs and position handlebars correctly. Ensure thatcables and tires are in good condition and sew-up tiresare glued properly onto the rims. Securely fasten allequipment you may carry with you on race day.To avoid an unexpected flat tire, wait until race morning toinflate your tires to their proper air pressure. As there willbe a limited number of pumps available in the transitionarea on race morning, we recommend you bring yourown. However, you must give your pump to a familymember or friend before the race start, since pumps willnot be accepted with your pre-swim bags.For security and safety reasons, <strong>bike</strong>s will not be allowedout of the transition area once<strong>bike</strong> check-in begins on Saturday. No one will be allowedto enter the <strong>bike</strong> compound unless accompanied by arace official.On race day, <strong>bike</strong> tech vehicles will patrol the <strong>course</strong> toaid in emergency repairs, but itis the sole responsibility of every athlete to carry thenecessary items to make their ownrepairs and continue with their race.


16BIKE COURSE RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS1. All <strong>bike</strong>s must display the <strong>bike</strong> frame number and it must be clearly visible. The <strong>bike</strong> number will be a stickerthat you have to fix to your <strong>bike</strong> seat frame.2. Tandems, recumbents, fairings or any add-on device designed exclusively to reduceresistance are not allowed. Any new, unusual or prototype equipment will be subject todetermine its legality by <strong>Ironman</strong> and / or the Chief Race Official.3. All <strong>bike</strong>s must be checked- in the Saturday prior to race day. Race officials reserve theright to reject any <strong>bike</strong> or helmet not meeting safety standards. If the <strong>bike</strong> does not meetsafety standards, the athlete will be required to correct the problem before participating in the race. Once your <strong>bike</strong>is checked into the transition area, only small covers on the seat and/or computer will be allowed. Large plasticbags that cover the entire <strong>bike</strong> will not be permitted.4. Position Rules:a. Absolutely NO DRAFTING of another <strong>bike</strong> or any other vehicle is allowed.b. Athletes must ride single file on the far right hand side of the road except when passing another rider. Side-bysideriding is not allowed.c. Overtaking riders may pass on the left for up to 20 seconds, but must move back to the right side of the road,after passing.d. Riders must keep 7 meters (~4 <strong>bike</strong> lengths) distance between <strong>bike</strong>s except when passing (10 meters for eliteor pro athletes).e. An overtaken rider must fall back 7 meters (~4 <strong>bike</strong> lengths) before attempting to regain the lead from a frontrunning <strong>bike</strong> (10 meters for elite or pro athletes).f. Athletes committing rules violations will be notified “on the spot” by an official.g. The official will:i. Call out your race number and notify you that you have received either a RED CARDfor drafting, or a YELLOW CARD for any other penalty. The official will show you the corresponding colored card.ii. Instruct you to report to the next penalty tent (PT) on the <strong>course</strong>. There will be six (6) PTs on the <strong>course</strong> (one atevery aid station) and one in the second transition area.i. Report to the next PT and tell the PT Official whether you received a RED CARD or a YELLOW CARD. If you failto report to the next PT, you may be disqualified.h. The Athlete Should:ii. Have race numbers marked by the PT Official with a “/” for drafting or a “P” for all other penalties.iii. Register, via the sign-in sheet.iv. Resume the race immediately, upon having your numbers marked with a “P” and registering, for all non-draftingviolations (YELLOW CARD).v. Remain in the PT for four (4) minutes for each drafting violation (RED CARD), the official at the PT will take apicture of you for proof that you attended.vi. Be disqualified if you receive any combination of three penalties. If you are disqualified, you may finish the <strong>bike</strong><strong>course</strong> but may not start the run.vii. Risk disqualification for not reporting to the PT.5. Shoes must be secured to <strong>bike</strong> pedals. Shoes may NOT be beside the <strong>bike</strong>.6. Each participant must wear the Metlife <strong>Ironman</strong> <strong>70.3</strong> <strong>Cozumel</strong> issued race number at all times while on the<strong>course</strong>. Folding or cutting race number or intentional alteration of any kind is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Race beltsmay be worn.7. CPSC-approved helmets are required during the entire <strong>bike</strong> ride, including in and out of the transition area. Anyathlete riding without an approved helmet or chinstrap not fastened may be disqualified. Alterations to a hard-shellhelmet, which affect its integrity, are not allowed.

Athletes who choose not torespect the policy will receive an automatic disqualification (DQ).EVENT SANCTIONThe Mexican Triathlon Federation (FMTRI) will sanction the 2013 Metlife <strong>Ironman</strong> <strong>70.3</strong> <strong>Cozumel</strong> and the event willabide by their rules and their officials.Any abuse of marshals, race officials or volunteers is grounds for immediate disqualification.RULES APPLYING TO ALL SEGMENTS OF THE RACEIt is the athlete’s responsibility to know all aspects of the swim, <strong>bike</strong> and run.1. Participants are expected to follow directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.2. Course marshals shall have the authority to disqualify any participant.3. Medical personnel shall have ULTIMATE and FINAL authority to remove a participant from the race if thecompetitor is judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury or death.Medical transport of any competitor will result in disqualification.4. No participant can use a Performance Enhancing drug or procedure. All doping processes and violations will behandled in strict accordance to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). A list of banned substances is availableat: http://www.wada-ama.org/en/ dynamic.ch2?pageCategory.id+370, also known as the WADA Prohibited List.Participants may be requested to undergo drug testing before and after the event. If you are requested to do so,you hereby agree to abide by such testing procedures.5. The Medical Control Rules set forth by FMTRI, in harmony with WADA regulations and policies on bannedsubstances, will be enforced for all participants. In addition, other rules and regulations even if not yet recognizedby the WADA, may be instituted, and if this occurs, you agree to abide by them.6. Should any participant have an Adverse Analytical Finding according to the WADA code, all procedures withregards to handling of the sample, notification, testing of the B Sample, adjudication and suspensions will beperformed in accordance with the WADA code.7. Fraud, theft, abusive treatment of volunteers or others and acts of poor sportsmanship are grounds forimmediate disqualification and will result in the competitor being suspended from competing in any IRONMANevent in the future.8. If an athlete decides to withdraw from the race at any time, it is the responsibility of the participant to report tothe timing tent located at the finish line and turn in their bib number and timing chip immediately. It is essential thatrace officials know where competitors are on the <strong>course</strong> at all times. Failure to comply after withdrawing from therace may result in the competitor being banned from competing in any IRONMAN event in the future.


229. Metlife <strong>Ironman</strong> <strong>70.3</strong> <strong>Cozumel</strong> reserves the right to make rule changes at any time provided all athletes arenotified in writing and/or at the pre-race athlete briefing meetings.10. As an FMTRI-sanctioned race, the Metlife <strong>Ironman</strong> <strong>70.3</strong> <strong>Cozumel</strong> will subscribe to FMTRI rules specifically,professional athletes may not win age group awards and age group athletes are not eligible for prize money.11. Communication devices of any type are strictly prohibited during competition. Use of such devices may resultin disqualification.12. IRONMAN does not allow the transfer of an athlete’s registration to another; no exceptions will be made to thisrule. Any attempt to transfer registration will result in disqualification and suspension from future participation in any<strong>Ironman</strong> event.PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED DIVISION RULESSupplemental rules and regulations pertaining to the Physically Challenged division are consistent with FMTRIrules.Swim1. IRONMAN reserves the right to seed the contestant at the swim start line (i.e., early start, late start, designatedwave, etc.).2. The athlete may use a wetsuit during the competition. Each athlete must obtain approval from IRONMAN priorto the race for all swimwear and accessories to be used during the swim. Any change thereafter will be groundsfor disqualification. The use of any flotation devices is prohibited unless otherwise approved by IRONMAN.Bike1. Cycling conduct and specifications are consistent with FMTRI rules.2. Handcycles are allowed. Race officials reserve the right to reject any <strong>bike</strong> not meeting safety standards.3. Equipment must otherwise conform to all other general rules for bicycles as it pertains to the <strong>Ironman</strong>competition, including no add-on device(s) that may reduce wind resistance or enhance aerodynamics of thebicycle/handcycle, regardless of any secondary benefit.4. Participants are required to maintain control of his/her bicycle/handcycle and to operate at a reasonable speedso as not to threaten the safety and well being of aid station volunteers, other competitors, race officials andspectators. Operation of a bicycle/handcycle in a dangerous or reckless manner will be grounds fordisqualification.5. A CPSC-approved helmet is required during the entire handcycle (<strong>bike</strong>) segment including in and out of thetransition area. Any athlete riding without an approved helmet or chinstrap not fastened will be disqualified.


23RUN GEAR BAG RECOVERYYou are required to reclaim your bicycle and running gear bag at the second transition area (T2) after the race(Sunday 12:30 – 4:00 p.m.). You must have your athlete wristband on for entry into the transition area.There will not be event provided shuttle bus services from T2 to host hotels after the race, you may get a taxi rightnext to the T2, please note that some of the host hotels are along the race <strong>course</strong>, you may expect delays to getto your destination.MEDICALThere will be medical staff and facilities throughout therace <strong>course</strong>. Trained individuals will be stationed alongthe swim <strong>course</strong> (in boats and on rescue boards) toassist you in case of an emergency.Additionally, there will be a primary medical aid station atthe finish line, as well as mobile medical teams roamingthe <strong>course</strong>. Over half of the visits occur afterparticipants have finished the race. Please do not leavethe recovery area after the finish line, until you and yourfriends are sure you are okay, until you can drink withoutvomiting and stand without dizziness. The medical aidstation at the finish line will officially close 8 hours afterthe last swim start. All athletes seeking medicalattention after that time will be referred to localemergency room facilities.All medical expenses incurred are the sole responsibilityof the athlete and not Metlife <strong>Ironman</strong> <strong>70.3</strong> <strong>Cozumel</strong>.Particular dangers include dehydration, hyponatremia,sunburn, exhaustion and injuries sustained fromaccidents. Please ask for medical help if you have theslightest symptom or don’t feel well. You will not bepenalized for receiving a medical evaluation. You will bewithdrawn from the race only if you requiretransportation, IV fluids or if medical personnel feel yourcontinued participation could result in serious harm ordeath.During events of extreme endurance, the body’s painthreshold is raised, and you may be in more troublethan you realize. The medical personnel will do all theycan to keep you in the race and assure a safe finish.Also, please be attentive when taking water, sportsdrinks or other supplies from volunteers when you’re onyour <strong>bike</strong> to avoid the possibility of accident or injury toyourself or another.Please trim your fingernails and toenails prior to the startof the race to avoid injury to other athletes. Beespecially careful to rinse your goggles of anyexcess defogger solutions to avoid eye irritation.If you spend three months prior to the event in aclimate cooler than <strong>Cozumel</strong>, we suggest youconsider an acclimation period in <strong>Cozumel</strong> beforethe race. The chances of dehydration and electrolyteimbalance can be reduced significantly by taking thetime to acclimatize.Stay with your familiar and proven routine regardingtraining, nutrition and equipment, especially justprior to the race. This also applies to pre-race dietaryintake and medications. It is recommended youavoid an extreme elimination diet. Adequate saltintake during training and during the event isespecially important.If you are taking any medications, or have anymedical problem that may influence yourperformance or your treatment in the event of aninjury, advise us of all necessary details well inadvance of race day. Failure to do so will result insuspension of participation in future IRONMANevents.You are solely responsible for avoiding medicationsthat appear on the list of banned substances asdetermined from WADA.Feedback from previous IRONMAN contestantsindicates we can never over emphasize theimportance of hydrating prior to and during theevent. Metlife <strong>Ironman</strong> <strong>70.3</strong> <strong>Cozumel</strong> chief physicianrecommends you begin hydrating heavily severaldays before the race and drink enough water soyour urine is clear, colorless and copious by raceday.


AID STATIONSThroughout the <strong>bike</strong> <strong>course</strong>, there will be aid stationswhich will be located at KM 10, 20, 34, 40, 50, 60, 70and 80 to supply you with Gatorade Regular Formula(lemon-lime and orange flavors) in ready-to-drinksport-top bottles, water and ice. Be sure to toss empty<strong>bike</strong> bottles and sports nutrition wrappers at the droptargets immediately prior to each aid station. Waterbottles will be exchanged at the aid stations.
