May-June 2005 | Perhaps Today | 11unreliable figment of the imagination.The Targum (Aramaic paraphrase of the OldTestament), the Talmud (a vast compendium of Jewishlaw and lore), and the Midrash (an interpretivemethod to penetrate the deepest meaning of aHebrew passage) all have concluded there will be aliteral thousand-year period when Messiah will reignon earth.For example, Rabbi Akiba wrote that the righteousMessiah will drink of the cup of life in the future age.Rabbi Isaac recited Psalm 45 which speaks aboutKing Messiah and His government of which therewill be no end.The rabbis of antiquity believed in the coming ofMessiah, or Moshiach, the redeemer who is destined tocome at an appointed time — to begin the millennium.This message of end-time hope and eternal promisecontinues to be taught in the religious curriculum ofJewish schools: “We believe the Messiah will gatherthe dispersed of Israel, and restore the government tothe house of David. We believe in the resurrection ofthe dead. We live in hope and expectation of thecoming of Messiah, and our return to our fatherland,the land of Judah. The Psalms of Solomon prayimploringly for the gathering of the elect Israel, theestablishment of the kingdom of mercy and kindness,Messiah’s smiting of the earth with the word of hismouth forever, and the coming of a king to subduethe scepters or the rulers of all the earth.”What the rabbis taught is often seen in biblicalpassages: Psalm 2:6 “I have set my king upon my holyhill of Jerusalem.” Isaiah 59:20 “The redeemer shallcome to Jerusalem.” Zechariah 2:10 & 11, “Sing andrejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I willdwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. And manynations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, andshall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst ofthee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hathsent me unto thee.” Luke 1:32 “He shall be great, andshall be called the Son of the Highest; and the LordGod shall give unto him the throne of his father David.”Because of Messiah’s reign “Jerusalem shall becalled the city of the great King” Matthew 5:35. Asfurther verification of this millennial teaching RabbiBechai stated: “When Messiah comes, the six thousandyears will be completed. Then the seventh day shallgo on, a genuine Sabbath and eternal life.”Rabbi Katina said, “The seventh millennium shallbe the thousand years of remission that God alonemay be exalted in that day.”The Jewish teachers have never believed that theworld would end with the advent of the Messiah.Instead, that would be a period when the affairs ofearth would at long last be governed with tranquility,blessedness, peace, and rest—the promised socialenvironment as Messiah appears and rules.Hosea 6:2 is a pivotal verse at this juncture. Theprophet states, “After two days will he revive us; inthe third day hewill raise us up,and we shall livein his sight.”Here is the significanceof thisScripture. In theyear A.D. 70Titus, the Romangeneral, marchedto Jerusalem,murdered a millionof God’speople, drovethe rest to thefar-flung cornersof the earth,thus disallowingthe Jews frompossessing theirhomeland forcenturies. In fact,almost two thousandyears passedbefore the Jewsof the diaspora became a nation.With that brief background we return to the text,“After two days will He revive us.” That day of “reviving”was May 14, 1948, when Israel became a nation —almost at the end of the “two days or 2000 years.”The rest of the passage reads, “In the third day HeSix thousandyears of history— four thousandyears from Adamto Christ — andtwo thousandyears from thehistorical Christuntil the years2015-2020.Shortly thereafter,theMessiah willappear.will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight.” That isthe Jewish resurrection that takes place in Daniel12:2: “And many of them that sleep in the dust of theearth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and someto shame and everlasting contempt.”RESURRECTION: A JEWISH THEMEHistorically, the theme of resurrection has been afamiliar topic for rabbis, and it continues to be arecurrent thesis in their teaching and in their schools.It is this resurrection of God’s people that will beamong the most significant of all events during the

Rabbi Eliazar said “Messiah’sdays shall be one thousand years, for it is written ‘aday in God’s sight is a thousand years.’”Rabbi Jose agrees when he underlines the messageof Rabbi Eliazar by adding that “Messiah’s days arethe days of restitution for Israel, and are one thousandyears.” Many do not realize how closely Pre-MillennialChristians are actually aligned in their theology withorthodox Jews and rabbis. For centuries, those of theJewish faith have believed in a literal, not-to-be-arguedagainst,thousand years of Messiah’s reign.For many Christians this theme is captivating, yetThis means therewould be twodays — or twothousand years— remaining tobring us to acomplete sixthousand years,which wouldculminatesometimebetween2015-2020.largely unstudied,especially byA-Millennialistswho reject thethousand yearreign because oftheir anti-Semiticstance. They arefound in fourmajor protestantdenominations.They foolishlyteach that Israelis the Churchand thatJerusalem isheaven. That’swhy I encouragethose with adesire to knowmore about theJewish historicalposition to get a copy of the Jewish Encyclopedia, orEncyclopedia Judaica, and look up the subjects,Millennium and Chiliasm. It’s all there — the teachingof a seven-day period. Six thousand years of history— four thousand years from Adam to Christ —and two thousand years from the historical Christuntil the years 2015-2020. Shortly thereafter, theMessiah will appear. It is a seminal part of Jewish history.And the Jews are not alone in their belief of thismillennial event.Now, how did the ancient rabbis and churchfathers come to the conclusion that the Messiahwould appear after 6,000 years?SIMPLE ARITHMETICJewish scholars arrive at this conclusion by interpretingPsalm 90:4: “For a thousand years in thy sight are butas yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in thenight.” Since the Rabbis, and other traditional Jewishscholars, believed that God created the world in sixdays, they reasoned the world would continue for sixthousand years. Simple arithmetic — and a carefulcalculation of the genealogical tables — shows thathumanity “used up” four thousand years from Adamto Christ. This means there would be two days — ortwo thousand years — remaining to bring us to acomplete six thousand years, which would culminatesometime between 2015-2020. That would be theapproximate time for Messiah’s return. Isaiah 63:4states: “The year of my Redeemer has come.”Now, while the present day calendar registers 2005years from Christ’s birth, the Jewish calendar is 235-240 years short of the necessary time to fulfill theabove prophecies. Why the discrepancy?Elieazer Schulman proved in an edition of theJerusalem Post that an error of 220 years was madein translating dates from the book of Numbers. Thus,he asserted that the predictions pointing to Messiah’sappearing, after six days, happen between 2015-2020at the latest.THE CHRISTIAN FATHERS AGREEThat the “Christian fathers” and historians ofChristianity are in basic agreement with Jewishscholars on the nature of the millennium and theMessiah’s reign for one thousand years on earth isconfirmed in numerous ways. Barnabas, in the Epistleof Barnabas — an apocraphal New Testament lettercited by Clemens, Alexandrinus, Eusebius, Jerome,and many ancient fathers — said that in six thousandyears, the Lord will bring all things to a conclusion,for with Him, one day is as a thousand years.Barnabas did not say this would then be the end ofthe earth as we know it. Rather, that it would be thebeginning of a thousand-year reign, beginning on dayseven. Saint Bartholomew taught the same truth basingit upon II Peter 3:8: “One day is with the Lord asa thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”Bishop Hippolytus was in agreement. As wasVictorinus, Bishop of Peteau, who penned a commentaryon the Apocalypse around A.D. 70. In it he wrote:“The true and just Sabbath shall be observed in theseventh millennium of years when Messiah with Hiselect shall reign.” Jewish scholars generally agree thatthe world shall last six thousand years from its creation,or eighty-five jubilees from the time of Elias. Then

May-June 2005 | Perhaps Today | 13the Son of David will come, and begin the world’s rest(the 7 th day Sabbatic rest).On January 12, 2005 the world’s media reportedthat the Sanhedrin — the previous religious lawmaking body within Judaism — reappeared after1,600 years, and 71 newly elected members agreed toimmediately begin working on the establishment of theThrone of David. That’s the Throne the Messiah occupiesupon His arrival. It’s obvious He is about to appear!In my article appearing above for the Jerusalem Postentitled: “Resurrection — A Jewish Theme,” onedefinitely notices repeatedly that the ancient rabbis aswell as the church fathers for the first 400 years ofChristianity dogmatically expounded that themillennial era would last one thousand years and thatit would arrive on the 7 th day after 6,000 years ofhistory. Both rabbis and Christian theological scholarscovering numerous centuries based this on Genesis1:31; 2:2; Psalms 90:4 and II Peter 3:8.With this historically documented background,one sees how ridiculous modern man made doctrinesbecome.First, Preterism, the nonsense that all the prophecieswere fulfilled by A.D. 70. How absurd. This woulddestroy hundreds of years of Judeo-Christian Theologybecause A.D. 70 would only be the beginning of the5 th day leaving the 6 th and 7 th days without fulfillment.Secondly, A-Millennialists teach that Christ’s reignbegan when He came to earth the first time. Again,this would occur on the 5 th day making the greatestrabbis and church fathers, covering hundreds of years,to look like deceived ignoramuses, bozos and blockheads.They were not. Instead it’s the A-Millennialistswho fit such descriptions.Listen to the following nonsense. I just copied thisfrom a famous T.V. Pastor’s pamphlet entitled: “TheEnd Time.” He states: “The thousand years of rulershipwith Christ cannot happen because this period of timeshould not be taken literally. It is a figurative symbolicalfigure just like the thousand hills of Psalm 50:10which states: ‘for every beast of the forest is mine, andthe cattle upon a thousand hills.’” He then explains thatthere could be hundreds or thousands of additionalhills, so it should be taken symbolically. The troublewith such reasoning is that every rabbi and churchfather for centuries proclaimed the 1,000-year theoryand it was to begin on the 7 th day after 6 days, or6,000 years of history. “Let God be true and everyman a liar” (Romans 3:4).The reign ofChrist on earthwill be for athousand years.

14 | Perhaps Today | May-June 2005This is the same crowd that mocks the Rapture, theMillennium and the reign of Christ from David’sthrone in Jerusalem (Luke 1:32, 33). Their erroneousman-made doctrine called “Replacement Theology”replaces Israel with the Church 2,604 times andJerusalem with Heaven 813 times. Thus, they say thatGod is through with the Jew forever. Such men areThe reign ofChrist on earthwill be for athousand years.Not to believethis is to beout of syncwith the earliestof Christianwritings. Thetruth of thisbelief remainsirrefutable.not theologiansbut rather“GospelMagicians.”The Churchor Christianityhas not replacedIsrael. I haveproduced 120texts in my bookentitled,“Millennium —Beginning orEnd,” provingthat God’s promisesandcovenants withIsrael are eternalas found in theAbrahamic,Mosaic,Palistinian,Davidic and newcovenants. The following material is from my book:Delitich had this to say about the early church andits millennial teachings: “Chiliasm, the 1,000-yearreign of Christ upon the earth, was the faith of theearly church. Irenaeus the Great — like Justin, themost learned man of his time — categorized and heldas promoters of heresy and even of blasphemy allthose who denied the chiliastic faith which, in theirday, was the test of an orthodox church. In other words,if you didn’t believe that, you were an unbeliever.”The reign of Christ on earth will be for a thousandyears. Not to believe this is to be out of sync with theearliest of Christian writings. The truth of this beliefremains irrefutable.These are the words of the early church fathers,the leaders during the first four hundred years ofChristianity. If, in their day, you did not believe inchiliasm — the reign of Christ on earth for a thousandyears — you were considered a heretic. Therefore,those in modern times who teach this biblical truth arenot heretics as A-Millennialists say. On the contrary,we are simply espousing the teachings of some of thegreatest church fathers in ecclesiastical history —men such as Bishop Hippolytus, Irenaeus, Tertullian,Justin Martyr, and twenty-five others.There is another more recent historian, Dr. NathanielWest, who speaks about chiliasm — the 1,000-yearreign of Christ upon earth. He says, “Such is theJewish origin of our Christian faith, the faith of the earlyJewish Christian church, the faith of the pre-Christianrabbis, the faith of God’s people under the old covenant,the faith of the prophets, a chiliastic faith and a chiliastickingdom of glory on earth. The vestibule and preludeto eternal blessedness.”This is the premise of his book. Why is this fulcrumof faith so vital as we stand at the door of the nextthousand years? Because the faith of the early churchof Jesus Christ was chiliastic — holding fast to thebelief that there would literally be a thousand-yearreign of Christ. It is irrefutable. It cannot be arguedagainst with any seriousness. Yet, for hundreds ofyears many believers were confused and thrown offbase by some of the statements made by the fifthcenturyChristian leader, Augustine.Augustine held his ground when he said thatwhenever the word “Israel” is mentioned in theScriptures, it means “church.” And when the Bibletalks about “Israel going home to its own specialland,” he maintained that this really refers to a“Christian going home to God in heaven.” The newrevised Catholic catechism rejects this erroneousteaching.As I ponder the other significant writings of this manit becomes even more difficult for me to understandhow a scholar as brilliant as Augustine could concoctsuch an erroneous, nonsensical interpretation ofGod’s Word. It simply cannot be interpreted in thatlight without doing serious damage to other relevantScripture.Isaiah 2:3 reminds us, “And many people shall goand say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountainof the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and hewill teach us of his ways, and we will walk in hispaths: for out of Zion shall go for the law and theword of the Lord from Jerusalem.”This passage must be taken literally. It is when thelaw is being administered out of Jerusalem uponMessiah’s appearing that they (the world’s militaryleaders) beat their swords into plowshares and theirspears into pruning hooks (Isaiah 2:3 and Malachi 4:3).

H.Savage.He was the only pastor I ever had,a brilliant man with a great passionfor souls and a far-reaching visionfor missions. He was an articulatespeaker who could reach out andtouch one’s heart each time heentered the pulpit.He was one of the first ministersto start a Christian radio program inthe state of Michigan, along withthe “Radio Bible Class” in GrandRapids. On the air or in person, hewas able to make Christianity adramatic and exciting adventure.Because my brothers and I weremusically talented and begansinging at a very young age, I hadthe privilege of singing in the churchand on Dr. Savage’s radio programfrom the time I was five years old.He was such an encouragement andblessing to me. Yes, he gave me thevision of being part of God’s work.I have been so privileged andblessed from the beginning of mywalk with Christ to be associatedwith people of excellence and havingpure and godly motives. TrulyI believe that God chose Jack to beborn for this day and age, and Icertainly know that I was born to servewith him. How wonderful that is!Recently in my personal devotionaltime, I read and reflected uponMatthew 5:3-11, the part of Jesus’monumental Sermon on the Mountknown as the Beatitudes. It hadbeen some time since I’d read thispassage, and it struck me that noone else could have given such acompelling sermon as this — noteven Dr. H. H. Savage or Dr. JackVan Impe.This powerful message is notlegalistic or impractical idealism.Instead, it is a call for a new way oflife. Our Lord would not have givenit to us if it were not attainable andworkable. If He has called us to doit — and unquestionably He has —then He also has provided the graceand the help of the Holy Spirit toenable us to achieve it in our dailypractical living.Let’s take a look at these sevensimple but profound statements —the Beatitudes:Blessed are the poor in spirit: fortheirs is the kingdom of heaven(Matthew 5:3).Each of the beatitudes beginswith the word blessed, which means“to be highly favored, honored, orset aside.” It speaks of the deepsoul contentment that comes notfrom what we experience as muchas who we are. I want to be blessed,don’t you?In this first Beatitude, I believe“poor in spirit” refers to humility, theauthentic attitude of the heart thatrecognizes it is absolutely nothing— poor — without the Lord. It isthe kind of spiritual poverty that isovercome only by total dependenceHave you everheard the voiceof a dove?Their singingmay be softand soothing,but it ispersistent. Thevoices of doveswill not behushed.upon Christ. At the same time, theperson who is truly poor in spiritalso recognizes that everything ishis because of God’s great gifts.Jesus demonstrated true humilitywhen He knelt down and washedthe feet of His disciples (see John13:3-9). I can hardly imagine the Godof this universe kneeling to washthe feet of these men, includingJudas, the man Jesus knew wouldbetray Him. This kind of humilitycomes only from the Lord.The gospel account says that Peter’sinitial reaction to the humility ofJesus was to refuse to allow his feetto be washed. But Jesus said, “If Idon’t wash you then you have nopart with me.” So impulsive, reactionaryPeter then pleaded, “Lord,not my feet only, but also my handsand my head.”Maybe the essential point of thiswhole exchange was the Lord’sdeclaration that experiencing Hishumility is essential to relationshipwith Him. If we don’t have that kindof humility, we have nothing. But ifwe experience it, we are blessed ...and the kingdom of heaven is ours!What an amazing promise.Blessed are they that mourn:for they shall be comforted(Matthew 5:4).How can mourning be blessed?When it is for the needs and hurtsof others! Our mourning is blessedwhen we are moved with a tenderheart and compassionate spirit forthe lost and those who suffer. BobPierce, the wonderful missionarywho founded both World Vision andSamaritan’s Purse, once prayed,“Let my heart be broken with thethings that break the heart of God!”That’s the kind of mourning aboutwhich this verse is speaking. Andwithout it, it is almost impossiblefor us to give comfort — or toreceive it.During His earthly ministry, Jesuscertainly demonstrated compassionto people everywhere He went. Heonce ministered to a crowd of 5,000,and when they became hungry, Hefed them all. When He saw sickpeople, He healed them. When Hesaw lost sinners, He loved them. Doyou see the pattern? Pity costsnothing. But compassion feeds,heals, and loves!Have you ever needed to becomforted? Is there a chance youwill ever need it again? That blessingcomes only to those who weep andmourn for the suffering of others ...and give until it helps.Blessed are the meek: for theyshall inherit the earth(Matthew 5:5).Blessing comes to those with agentle spirit and a calm attitude.Meekness is not weakness — it isthe kind of strength that remainscalm in the face of calamity. It is theperson who can confront someonewho has done wrong and keep hisemotions under control, reachingout as a gentle servant of the Lordto lift up and restore the fallen.Jesus sent His disciples out tominister, telling them to be ye

therefore wise as serpents, andharmless as doves (Matthew 10:16).Have you ever heard the voice of adove? Their singing may be soft andsoothing, but it is persistent. Thevoices of doves will not be hushed.The wisdom of the Lord enables us todeal with problems, with opposition,with the pressures of the world inmeekness — not with anger andviolence, but with gentle strength.During one of the huge crusaderallies Jack and I conducted severalyears ago, a crisis situation arose.Jack was still speaking to peoplein the auditorium after some hadalready gone to the prayer room forcounseling. Someone came to meand said, “Several motorcycle gangmembers are causing trouble in thecounseling room — can you comedo something?”As I entered the room I saw sevenor eight big tough-looking guys,mocking and laughing at what hadhappened as another counselorspoke with them. I said, “I’m Mrs.Van Impe, and in this room we askeverybody to stay in an attitude ofprayer.” One of them replied, “Aww,your husband spoke on hell tonight,and there’s no such place — it’s justa joke!”With that, the Holy Spirit cameon me, and I leaned close to theyoung man, looked him straight inthe face, and said, “You may notbelieve it, but one day you will feelit. Every word Jack spoke tonight isbacked up by the Bible, God’s Word,whether you believe it or not.”The biker and the rest of hisfriends looked startled — almostshocked. They didn’t know what todo with gentle strength. However,the Holy Spirit did His work andbefore they left the prayer room Iled them all to the Lord. Praise theLord! God blesses when we standupon the Word and show gentlestrength.I believe we need to be differentfrom the world. In the midst of therush, let’s not forget to be gentleand have time for people. I believeonce more we can experience whatSolomon described — The flowersappear on the earth; the time of thesinging has come, and the voice ofthe turtledove is heard in our land(Song of Solomon 2:12 NKJV).Walking in the gentle strength ofmeekness, we shall inherit the earth.Blessed are they which do hungerand thirst after righteousness:for they shall be filled(Matthew 5:6).I believe this Beatitude refers toour having a desire to see justicearound us, in our own country andaround the world. Those who areblessed by God, foreseeing the needsof others, do things to help justbecause it is the right thing to do.They speak up for the poor andneedy and for people in other landswho have not had the opportunityto live in freedom. Are we concernedenough about righteousness andholiness to be driven by these holycharacteristics as urgently as ourbodies respond to hunger and thirst?This verse also makes me a bitintrospective. I read it and ask, “Howcan I be righteous? How can I beright as I walk in this world?” Imust die to self and selfishness andallow Christ to live His life in andthrough me! The apostle Paul said,the life which I now live in the fleshI live by the faith of the Son of God,who loved me, and gave himself forme (Galatians 2:20).I believe that you and I can claimthis blessing only when we trulyhunger and thirst after holiness anddoing what is right. Then whathappens? We shall be filled ... withrighteousness and with His glory.Blessed are the merciful: forthey shall obtain mercy(Matthew 5:7).Mercy and righteousness areinextricably linked together. If wetruly want righteousness, we getinvolved, we extend help to theMay-June 2005 | Perhaps Today | 21needy, we assist, and we forgivethose who have sinned against us.If it is within our power, we mustshow this kind of mercy to those weencounter. Can we not share themercy that we ourselves havereceived?The writer of Lamentations cried,It is of the Lord’s mercies that weare not consumed, because hiscompassions fail not. They arenew every morning: great is thyfaithfulness (3:22-23).What a blessing to have thepromise of God’s mercy as we showtenderness to others. What a joy torealize that goodness and mercyshall follow me all the days of mylife (Psalm 23:6).Blessed are the pure in heart:for they shall see God(Matthew 5:8).Everything that we have seen andexperienced so far is by faith. Noneof us has ever had the joy of reallylooking at God. We have seen Hishandiwork, we have witnessed Hislove for us by sending His Son, andwe have seen the attributes inChrist that He wants us to have.But we have never seen Him.One day we will — if our heartsare pure. That is His promise. Tome, that will be the best thingabout heaven. I’m not really excitedabout seeing the golden streetsand magnificent surroundings. Andas much as I love and miss mywonderful mom and dad who arethere (and I do want to see themwith all of my heart), the first one Iwant to see in heaven is the Lord,my Savior and my God!How, then, can my heart be pure?My pretenses and masks must gobecause purity of heart cannot befalsified — it must be genuine andsincere. My entire being cries out,Create in me a clean heart, O God;and renew a right spirit within me(Psalm 51:10).This Beatitude, to my mind, is afoundation stone. It gets down to

22 | Perhaps Today | May-June 2005the crux of everything, doesn’t it? Ifyou don’t have a pure heart, whereis the authenticity to want to do theright thing? Without a pure heart,how can you be merciful?Indeed, without a pure heart, Icannot see Him. And oh, more thananything in this world, I want tolook upon His face!Blessed are the peacemakers:for they shall be called thechildren of God(Matthew 5:9).The Bible teaches that we are tolive peaceably with all men (seeRomans 12:18). The Lord doesn’twant us to harbor hate, animosity, orintolerance. There will be no placein heaven for racists or exclusionarycreeds. Humbly and gently, we are toseek solutions and to disarm hostility.The Bible says, A soft answer turnethaway wrath (Proverbs 15:1). Ibelieve that we should seek to bethe kind of person who — at home,at church, at work, or wherever wego — can simply enter a room andchange the atmosphere.Another way we can bring peaceis to help bring order out of chaos.Where there is clutter and confusion,simply stepping in to help organizeand restore order reduces stress andtension. And we can have the courageto do this by calling upon the wisdomand guidance of the Holy Spirit.The Word of God says that everywhereJesus went He did good anddestroyed the works of the devil —which produced peace (see Acts10:38; 1 John 3:8). And Jesus saidthat if we believe on Him, the worksHe did we can do also, and evengreater (see John 14:12). So as wego out and do what Jesus did, wewill make peace, because He was,and is, the prince of peace, thegreatest peacemaker the world hasever, or will ever know.If you give this a try, don’t besurprised if people start calling youa child of God. After all, that is theLord’s promise!I believe thatwe should seekto be the kindof person who— at home, atchurch, at work,or wherever wego—can simplyenter a roomand change theatmosphere.Blessed are they which are persecutedfor righteousness’ sake:for theirs is the kingdom ofheaven. Blessed are ye, whenmen shall revile you, and persecuteyou, and shall say all mannerof evil against you falsely,for my sake. Rejoice, and beexceeding glad: for great is yourreward in heaven: for so persecutedthey the prophets whichwere before you(Matthew 5:10-12).The idea of persecution beinga blessing seems very strange,especially for believers in America.We have never experienced most ofthe things that missionaries andother Christians around the worldhave been forced to endure for thesake of the gospel. Yet Jesus saidthat we would have tribulation andsuffering in this world. And for suchmonumental sacrifices, He said therewould be great rewards and crowns.I had great admiration for one ofthe girls in my home church. Shemarried a minister and they went toSouth America as missionaries. Theteam with whom they were workingwas attacked by primitive warriorsfrom the Auca Indian tribe, and myfriend’s husband was one of themen who was killed.The incident attracted internationalnews coverage, and I vividly recallseeing a television interview withthe father of the martyred youngman. He was asked, “If you couldhave kept your son from going toSouth America and being killed as amissionary, would you have done so?”I’ll never forget his answer. Heshook his head and said, “Would I robmy son of the martyr’s crown?” Ofcourse, that father felt grief for hisson’s death, but he expressed nobitterness or regret. He genuinelybelieved that his son would be blessedwith a great reward in heaven becauseof the persecution he endured forthe Lord (Revelation 2:10).I truly believe all those who loseloved ones in God’s work receive aspecial measure of divine comfort. Ibelieve God might well speak totheir hearts saying, “I understandhow you feel — I sent My Son intothe world, and they crucified Himalso.”The psalmist declared, weepingmay endure for a night, but joycometh in the morning (Psalm 30:5).My challenge to youI encourage you to underscoreMatthew 5:3-11 in your Bible andread those few verses often. Lifeitself is in that short passage. Letthe Holy Spirit impress each phraseof the Beatitudes on your heart andstamp them indelibly in your mind.Remember, this kind of living ispossible! Jesus would not havespoken these truths if they werenot accessible for all of us! I believethat when you and I hide these wordswithin our hearts and then open ourmouths to speak, the Holy Spirit willgive us the words that we shouldsay. And when these utterancescome forth from our mouths ... thevoices of the doves will be heard!
