General1.1 ApplicationThe DIGISTANT ® model <strong>4411</strong> is capable as a small manageable checkingand calibration device for process technology in field.The other applications in the metrology include e.g. the calibration ofindication instruments, recorders, the checking of amplifiers, transducersand so on...The interests of the control technology were included particularly. Thedirect calibration data entry by UP/DOWN keys, the use of ramp functions,simplifier the management of measurement tasks.The function SINK can simulate a 2 wire transducer in a current loop.Both current and voltage can be generated or measured.1.2. DescriptionThe operation is made by UP/DOWN keys for each digit, measuringrange and measuring functions are activated by rotary switches and orslide switches.The DIGISTANT ® <strong>4411</strong> generates and measures voltages up to 30 V DCand currents up to 24 mA DC.The output level can be changed up and down between 4, 8, 12, 16 and20 mA signals by one touch for the “4 - 20 mA” output, and between1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 V DC signals for the “1 ... 5 V” output, for efficient calibrationwork.The “20 mA SINK” function absorbs a current adjustable from0.1 … 24 mA in a LOOP with a voltage from 5 … 28 V DC.The “ramp function” increases and decreases the output level to thepreset level at a constant rate for the selected sweep time (16 or 32seconds).Page 9

OUTPUT ON/OFF keyTurns the output on/off in SOURCE mode (signal generation). InMEASURE mode (measurement), it returns measurement operationto normal status after the protective circuit is activated. Range selection rotary switchSelects a range for SOURCE mode (signal generation) orMEASURE mode (measurement). Note that the 4 - 20 mA and1 - 5 V ranges are step output ranges in signal generation andare the same as the 20 mA and 10 V ranges in measurement,respectively. For invalid ranges, terminal-to-terminal connectionbecomes open, causing "-nC-" and "OFF" to appear on thedisplay unit. <strong>Model</strong> <strong>4411</strong> DIGISTANT ®4. Replacing BatteriesWhen the + - mark is blinking on the display unit, the batteriesare exhausted. Replace them according to the following procedure: Check that the power is turned off (disconnect the lead cables). Slide off the cover at the back of the instrument. Replace all four batteries with new ones. Insert them according tothe polarity directions shown inside the holder. After replacing the batteries, return the cover to the original position.Page 19


DIGISTANT ® <strong>Model</strong> <strong>4411</strong>►Connecting the AC power (optional)Before connecting the AC power strictly observe thefollowing warnings to avoid electrical shock or damageto the instrument.WARNING► Before connecting the power cord, check that the supplyvoltage matches the rated voltage of the instrument.► Before connecting the power cord, check that theinstruments power key is OFF.► Do not use any AC adapter other than the dedicatedAC adapter.Connection procedure Check that the [POWER] key of the instrument is off. Connect the AC adapter (optional) to the instruments ACadapter connection jack. (Note that unless the AC adapteris connected to the power outlet, the power cannot beturned on).Page 20

Turning the Power ON/OFF► Operating the POWER keyWhen the instruments power is off, pressing and holding the[POWER] key for more than 1 second causes the power to beturned on. Pressing the key again causes it to be turned off.When the power is turned on, the instrument starts self-test anddisplay "CA11". Then the features selected using the range selectionrotary switch and the MEASURE/SOURCE selection switchstart functioning.► For battery-driven operations, disconnect the AC adapterfrom the instrument.► Automatic Power OFFIn the factory setting, all indications start blinking if the instrumenthas not been operated for about 9.5 minutes. Then, if the instrumentis not operated for another 30 seconds, it automaticallyturns off.To disable this automatic power off feature, see section 8 "OtherFeatures".If you wish to keep the instrument turned on after the indicationsstart blinking, press the [POWER] key (or any other key). Thiscauses the blinking to return to normal lighting, without changingthe previous settings.Page 21

SOURCE (generation)6.1 Connecting the output terminal Insert the plugs of the supplied lead cables into the output terminalsof the instrument. Connect the clips on the other ends of the cables to the inputterminals of the device under generation.OUTPUT V/mAHiLoHi– +CAUTION►►Do not apply any voltage to the output terminals except for the20 mA SINK range. If voltage is applied mistakenly, the internalcircuit may be damaged.As the instrument is calibrated without the voltage drop of thelead cables, error due to the resistance of the lead cables (approx.0.1 Ω for go an return) must be considered for load currentmeasurement.Page 23

In valid ranges, terminal-to-terminal connectionopens, and the display unit indicates "-nC-" and "OFF".►Normal setting: Switch the MEASURE/SOURCE selection switch to "SOURCE"(generation). This causes the display unit to show "SOURCE"and "OFF". Select the range to be generated using the range selectionrotary switch. The display unit shows an initial value and unitfor each range. Press the [▲] / [▼] keys under the lower four digits to set anoutput value (5ft digit: changes by carry and borrow of thevalue from the 4th digit). Press the [OUTPUT ON/OFF] key to output a signal. The displayunit shows "ON".To stop the output, press the [OUTPUT ON/OFF] keys again.This causes "OFF" to appear on the display unit and theterminals to open.Page 24

For the lower three digits, these keysare used to increase or decrease the value of each digit in incrementsof 1.4 - 20 mA step output rangeUse the range selection rotary switch to select 4 - 20 mA5-digit resolution, set dip switch 3 to "OFF".Use the [▲] / [▼] keys under the upper one digit to change the value inincrements of 4 mA: 4 ←→ 8 ←→ 12 ←→ 16 ←→ 20 mA.For the lower three digits, these keys are used to increase or decreasethe value of each digit in increments of 1.4-digit resolution, set dip switch 3 to "ON".Use the [▲] / [▼] keys under the upper two digit to change the value inincrements of 4 mA: 4 ←→ 8 ←→ 12 ←→ 16 ←→ 20 mA.For the lower two digits, these keys are used to increase or decreasethe value of each digit in increments of 1.24 V (20 mA) rangeIn the 24 V output (20 mA measurement) range, the instrument can beused as a source of constant voltage (24 V) to conduct a loop test of atransmitter.Select "24 V (20 mA)" and SOURCE using the respective switches.Press the "OUTPUT ON/OFF" key to set the output to "ON" (for 24 V DCoutput). The display unit shows the current measurement and "SOURCE"(for 20 mA measurement).Page 25


DIGISTANT ® <strong>Model</strong> <strong>4411</strong>► 20 mA SINK rangeThe instrument can absorb (SINK) a current with a specified value sentfrom an external voltage generator (distributor) to the "Hi" terminal ofthe instrument. As the instrument serves as a two-wire transmitter, itcan be used for a loop test. Select "20 mA SINK and SOURCE using therespective switches. Press the "OUTPUT ON/OFF" key to set the outputto "ON". The display unit shows the set value (SINK) and "SOURCE".Uses an external power supply for 20 mA SINK in the range of 5 - 28 V.The polarity of applied voltage should be as shown in the figures below.Be careful not to apply voltage in the opposite direction.►►Output limiterIf a load current in the voltage range or a load voltage in the currentrange exceeds the maximum value specified in the specifications, theprotective limiter is activated, turning off the output signal. To recoverfrom this condition, correct the load to normal status and press the"OUTPUT ON/OFF" key to turn on output.Sweep functionThis function increases or decreases the output level to the preset levelas a constant rate by setting DIP switch 1 to ON. For more information,see subcategory 8.1 "Sweep Function".Page 26


<strong>Model</strong> <strong>4411</strong> DIGISTANT ®7. MeasurementWARNING► When connecting the device under measurement, turn off the powerof the device. Connecting/disconnecting the lead cables for measurementwithout turning off the power of the device under measurementmay be extremely dangerous.► Special care should be taken to avoid connecting a current circuitto the voltage input terminals or a voltage circuit to the current inputterminals. Inadvertent connection may not only cause damage to thecircuit or device under measurement and this instrument, but mayalso be dangerous to personnel.► Always use the lead cables supplied with the instrument.► Maximum allowable voltage between all input/output terminals andground is 30 V DC. Any voltage exceeding this level may not onlydamage the instrument, but also cause injury to personnel. Neverattempt to apply such voltage.Page 27


DIGISTANT ® <strong>Model</strong> <strong>4411</strong>CAUTION► Do not apply voltage exceeding the maximum allowable input voltageto the voltage input terminals. This may damage the instrument.Maximum input voltage: 30 V DC► Do not apply current exceeding the maximum allowable input to thecurrent input terminals. If current exceeding this level is applied, buildinfuses for protecting the current input circuit will burn out. MEASURE lights up on the display unit. Select the range to be measured using the range selection rotaryswitch.► The display unit shows the measurement results and unit.Indication of the measurement results will be updated approximatelyevery second.► If an input signal is over range or not measurable, the displayunit shows "____".► For invalid ranges, terminal-to-terminal connection becomesopen, causing the display unit to show "-nC-" and "OFF".►Input limiterIf voltage is applied to the current input terminals or excessive currentis applied to them, the internal protective circuit is activated, openingthe terminal-to-terminal connection and causing the display unit toshow "OFF".In this case, check that the connection is correct and press the "IN-PUT ON" key (= "OUTPUT ON/OFF" key). This causes the OFF indicationto disappear and measurement to resume.Page 29

Set the MEASURE/SOURCE selection switch to SOURCE. Thedisplay unit shows "SOURCE", "OFF", "SP", and lower limit (initialvalue). Use the [▲] / [▼] keys to preset the upper limit for output in thesame way as for normal signal generation (status A above). Press the "OUTPUT ON/OFF" key The display unit shows "ON" and a lower limit (initial value) for 2seconds, and the instrument outputs that value. Then the reading on the display unit and the output level automaticallyincrease to the upper limit set in step at the constantsweep time rate set in step .The display unit shows the "ON" light blinking.In this case, if you press the "OUTPUT ON/OFF" key again, thereading and the output level will start decreasing from that valueat a constant rate. The output status changes to status E (shownby dotted-lines in the figure).Page 32
