Honors SeminarHMNT 451 , HMNT 452 , a sequence of eight seminar sessions, one each month, September through April taken during the junior or senioryear.3. Project (2-3 hours, Directed Study)A significant scholarly project, involving research, writing, or special performance, appropriate to the major in question, is ordinarilycompleted the senior year. Ideally, this project will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the student's major field andsome other discipline. The project is expected to be of sufficiently high quality to warrant a grade of A and to justify public presentation. Thecompleted project submitted in duplicate must be submitted electronically and to http://turnitin.com. Projects must be approved by the HonorsCommittee in consultation with the student’s supervising professor four weeks prior to graduation. The 2-3 hours of credit for this project isdone as a directed study or in a research class.Graduation RequirementsDegree Candidacy: A student becomes a degree candidate when s/he enters the school term during which it will be possible to complete allrequirements for graduation. A senior contract for graduation must be given to the Records and Advisement Office by the end of October of the senioryear.Dates of Graduation: The date of graduation will be (a) the date of commencement for those graduating in December or May and (b) for others, thelast day of the month in which graduation requirements are met and an official transcript is received at the Records and Advisement Office. Currently,there are two commencement services annually, one at the end of the first semester and another at the end of the second semester.Transcripts: Before a student will be allowed to graduate, transcripts of all transfer credits and pertinent correspondence must be received at theRecords and Advisement Office.Participation in Graduation Exercises: Students are allowed to participate in commencement exercises only if they have completed all the coursesrequired for graduation.Deferred Graduation: Students ordinarily graduate under the requirements of the <strong>Catalog</strong> of the year in which they enter the <strong>University</strong>. Students whoare studying for a baccalaureate degree and fail to graduate within six calendar years (four years for an associate degree), must plan to conform to thecurrent <strong>Catalog</strong>.Residence RequirementsBaccalaureate Degree: Twenty-five percent of the total semester hours required for the baccalaureate degree must be taken in residence, including atleast 30 of the last 36 hours completed preceding the conferment of the degree. The total hours taken in residence must include at least 15 in upperdivision, 9 of which must be in the major (per major) and 3 in the minor (per minor), if one or more minors are taken.Associate Degree: Twenty-five percent of the total semester hours required for the associate degree must be taken in residency including at least 30 ofthe last 36 hours completed preceding the conferment of the degree. The total hours taken in residence must include at least 15 in the major (per major)and 3 in the minor (per minor) if one or more minors are taken.Certificate Programs: Eighteen semester hours of credit must be completed in residence immediately preceding the conferment of a one-yearcertificate.Transfer Credit: Prior arrangements must be made with the Records and Advisement Office to take courses for transfer credit at another college oruniversity during any session the student is simultaneously enrolled at <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>University</strong> and during any summer after initial enrollment.See department/school sections of the <strong>Catalog</strong> for classes which must be taken in residence.
