URBAN FORESTRY AUSTRALIA - TREE MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING ARBORICULTURISTSA tree’s SULE category is the life expectancy of the tree modified first by its age, health,condition, safety and location (to give safe life expectancy); then by economics (i.e. costof maintenance - retaining trees at an excessive management cost is not normallyacceptable); and finally, effects on better trees, and sustained amenity (i.e. establishing arange of age classes in a local population).SULE assessments are not static but may be modified as dictated by changes in treehealth and environment. Trees with a short SULE may at present be making acontribution to the landscape, but their value to the local amenity will decrease rapidlytowards the end of this period, prior to them being removed for safety or aestheticreasons.For details of SULE categories see Appendix B, adapted from Barrell 1996.Structural Root Zone (SRZ) refers to the critical area required to maintain stability of thetree. Only thorough investigation into the location of structural roots within this area canidentify whether any minor incursions into this protection zone are feasible.Suppressed In crown class, trees which have been overtopped and whose crowndevelopment is restricted from above.Topping or heading is a pruning practice that results in removal of terminal growthleaving a cut stub end. Topping causes serious damage to the tree.Tree Protection Zone (TPZ), generally the minimum distance from the center of the treetrunk where protective fencing or barriers are to be installed to create an exclusion zone.The TPZ surrounding a tree aids the tree’s ability to cope with disturbances associatedwith construction works. Tree protection involves minimising root damage that is causedby activities such as construction. Tree protection also reduces the chance of a tree’sdecline in health or death and the possibly damage to structural stability of the tree fromroot damage.To limit damage to the tree, protection within a specified distance of the tree’s trunk mustbe maintained throughout the proposed development works. No excavation, stockpilingof building materials or the use of machinery is permitted within the Tree Protection Zone(TPZ).Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) a procedure of defect analysis developed by Mattheckand Breloer (1994), that uses the growth response and form of trees to detect defects.Whole Tree Failure Where a tree fails at the roots, or at the root crown (where the rootsand stem of the tree meet).Arboricultural Audit & Development Impact Assessment– Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, Enmore ParkFebruary, 2009. 26 of 42
