URBAN FORESTRY AUSTRALIA - TREE MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING ARBORICULTURISTS6.3.6 Demolition Works within Tree Protection Zoneso Demolition <strong>of</strong> pathways and paved areas within the TPZ <strong>of</strong> trees to beretained shall be undertaken under the supervision <strong>of</strong> the Site Arborist.o The pavement surface and sub-base shall be stripped-<strong>of</strong>f either byhand, or in layers <strong>of</strong> no greater than 50mm thick using a small rubbertracked excavator or alternative approved method to avoid damage tounderlying roots and minimise soil disturbance.o The machine shall work within the footprint <strong>of</strong> the existing pathway toavoid compaction <strong>of</strong> the adjacent soil.o The final layer <strong>of</strong> sub-base material shall be removed using hand toolswere required to avoid compaction <strong>of</strong> the underlying soil pr<strong>of</strong>ile anddamage to woody roots.o Following removal <strong>of</strong> the pavement surface and sub-base, clean, friabletopsoil shall be used to fill in the excavated area and bring flush withsurrounding levels. Soil shall only be imported and spread when theunderlying soil conditions are dry to avoid compaction <strong>of</strong> the soil pr<strong>of</strong>ile.o Demolition <strong>of</strong> low masonry walls within the TPZ <strong>of</strong> trees to be retainedshall be undertaken under the supervision <strong>of</strong> the Site Arborist. Thewalls shall be demolished using equipment on the street side <strong>of</strong> thewall. Care shall be taken to avoid the root systems, trunks and lowerbranches <strong>of</strong> trees in the vicinity <strong>of</strong> the existing walls.6.3.7 Canopy & Root Pruningo Removal <strong>of</strong> any deadwood from the trees is recommended prior toproject commencement.o A minimum amount <strong>of</strong> live material should be removed from trees sothey have maximum photosynthetic ability to develop new roots toadapt to new conditions.o Pruning to lift or reduce the crown <strong>of</strong> any tree must be carried out by aqualified tree worker or arboriculturist, to ensure the works are notperformed by untrained contractors.o All pruning work required shall be carried out in accordance withAustralian Standard No 4373-2007— Pruning <strong>of</strong> Amenity Trees.o All pruning work shall be carried out by a qualified and experiencedarborist or tree surgeon in accordance with the NSW WorkCover Code<strong>of</strong> Practice for the Amenity Tree Industry (1998).o Care shall be taken when operating cranes, drilling rigs and similarequipment near trees to avoid damage to tree canopies (foliage andbranches). Under no circumstances shall branches be torn-<strong>of</strong>fby construction equipment. Where there is potential conflict betweentree canopy and construction activities, the advice <strong>of</strong> the Site Arboristmust be sought.o Where root pruning is required, roots shall be severed with clean, sharppruning implements and retained in a moist condition during theconstruction phase using Hessian material or mulch where practical.Arboricultural Audit & Development Impact Assessment– Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, <strong>Enmore</strong> <strong>Park</strong>February, 2009. 19 <strong>of</strong> 42
