URBAN FORESTRY AUSTRALIA - TREE MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING ARBORICULTURISTS6.3.2 Underground Serviceso All proposed stormwater lines and other underground services shouldbe located as far away as practicable, or suspended beneath the floorof the building where possible, to avoid excavation within the TPZ oftrees to be retained.o For underground services, where the incursion to the Root Zone is lessthan 20% of the total TPZ, a chain trenching device may be used. Abackhoe or skid steer loader is unacceptable due to the potential forexcessive compaction and root damage.o Where large woody roots (greater than 50mm in diameter) areencountered during excavation or trenching, these shall be retainedintact wherever possible (e.g. by sub-surface boring beneath roots orre-routing the service etc).o Excavations required for underground services within the TPZ of anytree to be retained should only be undertaken by sub-surface boring. The Invert Level of the conduit, plus the conduit diameter, must belower than the estimated root zone depth as specified. This will dependon the soil conditions at the site. Where this is not practical and rootpruning is the only alternative, proposed root pruning should beassessed by the arborist to determine continued health and stabilityof the subject tree.o If trees show signs of stress or deterioration, remedial action shall betaken to improve the health and vigour of the subject tree(s) inaccordance with best practice arboricultural principles.6.3.4 Pavementso Pavements should be avoided within the TPZ of trees to be retainedwhere possible.o Proposed paved areas within the TPZ of trees to be retained should beplaced above grade to minimise excavations within the root zone andavoid root severance and damage.6.3.5 Fill Materialo Placement of fill material within the TPZ of trees to be retained shouldbe avoided where possible. Where placement of fill cannot be avoided, the material should be a coarse, gap gradedmaterial such as 20 — 50mm crushed basalt or equivalent to providesome aeration to the root zone. Note that roadbase or crushedsandstone or other material containing a high percentage of fines isunacceptable for this purpose. The fill material should be consolidatedwith a non-vibrating roller to minimise compaction of the underlying soil.o A permeable geotextile may be used beneath the sub-base to preventmigration of the stone into the sub-grade. No fill material should beplaced in direct contact with the trunk.Arboricultural Audit & Development Impact Assessment– Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, Enmore ParkFebruary, 2009. 18 of 42
