URBAN FORESTRY AUSTRALIA - TREE MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING ARBORICULTURISTS6.3 Tree Protection Zones and Minimising Impacts on Trees to be Retained6.3.1 The Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) is to be in accordance with the following:o Protection devices may include mulching, tree guards and otherdevices other than fencing.o TPZ must be in place prior to any site works commencing, includingclearing, demolition or grading.o The most appropriate fencing for TPZ is 1.8m chainlink with 50mmmetal pole supports. During installation care must be taken to avoiddamage to significant roots. The practicality of providing this fencing onthis site must be addressed by the arboriculturist.o Locate large primary roots by careful removal of soil within the fencingarea. Do not drive any posts or pickets into tree roots. Replace soilback over tree roots.o It is recommended that the arboriculturist provide written certificationthat the TPZ is installed and will satisfy tree protection requirements.o Nothing should occur inside the TPZ, so therefore all access topersonnel and machinery, storage of fuel, chemicals, cement or sitesheds is prohibited.o Signage should explain exclusion from the area defined by TPZ andcarry a contact name for access or advice.o The TPZ cannot be removed, altered, or relocated without the projectarborists’ prior assessment and approval.o Excavations within the TPZ of any tree to be retained shall be avoidedwherever possible.o Excavations for foundations and pavement sub-grade within the TPZ ofany tree to be retained shall be undertaken by hand or using anAir.spade® device to locate and expose roots along the perimeter ofthe foundation or pavement prior to any mechanical excavation.o All care shall be undertaken to preserve root systems intact andundamaged. Any roots less than 50mm in diameter shall be cleanlysevered with clean sharp pruning implements at the face of theexcavation.o The root zone in the vicinity of the excavation shall be kept moistfollowing excavation for the duration of construction to minimise stresson the tree.o Where large woody roots (greater than 50mm diameter) areencountered during excavations, further advice from a qualified arboristshall be sought prior to severance.o Where necessary, (to avoid severing large woody roots) considerationshould be given to the installation of an elevated structure (e.g. pier andbeam footing, suspended slab or floor on piers, cantilevered slab, etc)in preference to structures requiring a deep edge beam or continuousperimeter strip footing. The beam section of any pier and beam footingshould be placed above grade to avoid excavation within the TPZ.o For masonry walls or fences it may be acceptable to delete continuousconcrete strip footings and replace with suspended in-fill panels (e.g.steel or timber pickets, lattice etc) fixed to pillars.Arboricultural Audit & Development Impact Assessment– Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, Enmore ParkFebruary, 2009. 17 of 42
