Light polesFurther research would beneeded to identify the installationdate of the existing periodlightpoles in the park, but this maynot be warranted.Available historic photos collectedto date do not show theselightpoles; however a photographfrom the late 1930s or early 1940sseems to indicate that there weredifferent lightpoles in the park atthat time.Rating: Not knownUntil more is known about theirprovenance, it is difficult toascribe a heritage rating tothem.They have an Edwardian periodstyle which would have suitedthe Park in the early 20 thcentury, although they mayhave been brought in fromelsewhere and installed later.It is suggested they be groupedinto one precinct of the Park –e.g. near the Enmore Roadentrance, and that other,modern lighting be installed inthe remainder of the Park..21. North-western entry gatewayThis sandstone gateway from thecorner of Llewellyn St andEnmore Rd was built in the late1930s as part of a substantialupgrading of the park.It appears to have been retainedin its original form, although thetwo blocks at the top of each‘pillar’ were not present in thephoto of the item taken after itscompletion.The brick paving in front of theelement may date back to itsconstruction, when brick edgingwas seen around this streetcorner.22. South-western entry archwayThis sandstone archway from thecorner of Enmore Rd and VictoriaRd was built in the late 1930s aspart of a substantial upgrading ofthe park.It appears to have been retainedin its original form.Rating: HighRetain as existing. Confirmoriginal location of two blockson the top of the gateway.Repair damaged sections asrequired and as advised by aconservation architect.Rating: HighRetain as existing. Crazy-paved sandstone zone –corner of Enmore Road andVictoria RoadLikely to have been laid out at thetime of the construction of thesandstone archway, this area wasprobably formed in this crazypavedconfiguration to drawpeople’s attention to the parkentry. It is typical of paving of theinterwar period.Rating: Low – ModerateRetain and repair as required.24. Enmore Road bus shelterBuilt as part of the upgradingworks on the mid to late 1930s,this substantial shelter appearslargely unchanged from its originalcomposition (apart from notcontaining the long slatted benchseats formerly underneath it).The green benches behind thestructure were placed there insubsequent decades.A pathway formerly extended offthe building to the existingpyramidal markers east of thestructure.The shelter is formed by twoashlar masonry pillars eightcourses high at each end betweenwhich was a faceted drinkingfountain (no longer in use).Rating: ModerateRetain as existing and repair asrequired with the advice of aconservation architect.Consider removal of greentimber benches along easternplatform behind building andthe re-establishment of slattedbenches under the roof as inoriginal.25. Former sandstone fountainAccording to the Godden MackayHistoric Resources Survey 1990this item is: “A small sandstonefountain, set on an octagonalplinth, built in rough-facedmasonry” The fountain shaft isoctagonal…..The fountain datesfrom pre-1958”.Its provenance is not known, butits simple, stripped down stylesuggests modernist influences,possibly of the late 1920s.Rating: ModerateRetain and repair as required.Mayne-Wilson & Associates29Conservation Landscape Architects
