Conservation Management StrategyEnmore Park1.0 Introduction and PurposeMarrickville Council has decided to review and update the Plan of Management for EnmorePark, involving a review of the site, preparation of a Conservation Management Strategy, andrenewal of the master plan and the Plan of management. For the preparation of the ConservationManagement Strategy (CMS), Council appointed Mayne-Wilson & Associates, ConservationLandscape Architects, to undertake this task.The purpose of the CMS was to identify the significant heritage fabric of the Park so that thiscould be protected and taken into account when the landscape masterplan was being prepared. Itwould also enable the impacts on the Park from the proposed works on the Swimming Pool to beconsidered in a broad context. As Council required that a Landscape Analysis of the Park beproduced in conjunction with the CMS, Mayne-Wilson & Associates (MWA) have liaisedclosely with the appointed Landscape Architects, Environmental Partnership, in their formulationof the landscape masterplan.1.1 The Study AreaThe Figure below shows the extent of the Park in the context of the surrounding streets. Conservation Management StrategyEnmore Park1.2 Report Structure and MethodologyThe report commences with an overview of the history and context of Enmore Park, drawinginformation provided by Council, the Marrickville Local History Centre, the Mitchell Library,and a previous historical study prepared by Godden Mackay Pty Ltd. This was followed by a siteinspection and recording of all elements which appeared to have potential heritage value andcontributed to the Park’s essential character and significance. These elements, which includedthe overall Park layout, were then assessed against the historical research – and sometimesstimulated further specific research on them. Photographs of the elements were then placed in atable, with a brief description of their location and origin, followed by a heritage rating andrecommended action to conserve or enhance them. These were then used to formulate an overallstatement of heritage significance for the Park. This information was then summarized on a StateHeritage Inventory Form.Following that, the CMS identifies Council’s approach to, and requirements regarding EnmorePark, and draws attention to the principal elements to be conserved, and those that could bealtered to a lesser or greater degree. Exemptions under the Heritage Act are identified, andopportunities for historical interpretation briefly discussed. These findings were then discussedwith the Landscape Architects at the early stage of their formulation of the landscape masterplan.1.3 AuthorshipThis CMS has been prepared by Warwick Mayne-Wilson, Director of MWA, with assistancefrom Ari Anderson of his office, who undertook most of the research and data entry.1.4 LimitationsAs the history of the Park has already been substantially researched and written up, there are fewlimitations to the information we have been able to assemble on the Park’s historicaldevelopment. We have not, however, been able to obtain data from early workbooks or files onthe precise date or cost of early work in the Park, since it has not been possible to locate them(presumably because they no longer exist). In particular, we have not been able to obtain imagesof the original fountain and bandstand in the Park, but hope some may be located in future.Accordingly, we have had to rely on an analysis of early photographs, plans, and especially aerialphotographs to obtain approximate dates on which some park elements appeared and (in somecases) disappeared.
