God he<strong>lp</strong>s <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Isra</strong>e<strong>lite</strong>s w<strong>in</strong> a ba<strong>ttle</strong>.Exodus 17:8-16The <strong>Isra</strong>e<strong>lite</strong>s traveled <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e desert toward<strong>th</strong>e land God promised to give <strong>th</strong>em. Moses led<strong>th</strong>is huge crowd of people and <strong>th</strong>eir sheep, goats,donkeys and cows. But some people called <strong>th</strong>eAmalekites lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>th</strong>is desert. They did not want<strong>th</strong>e <strong>Isra</strong>e<strong>lite</strong>s and all <strong>th</strong>ose animals to cross <strong>th</strong>eirland. They wanted to chase <strong>th</strong>em away.Moses asked his he<strong>lp</strong>er, Joshua, to lead a groupof men to fight <strong>th</strong>e Amalekites. Moses said hewould stand on a nearby hill, pray<strong>in</strong>g to God andhold<strong>in</strong>g up his special stick. Moses knew his mencouldn’t w<strong>in</strong> <strong>th</strong>e ba<strong>ttle</strong> wi<strong>th</strong>out God’s he<strong>lp</strong>.The next morn<strong>in</strong>g Moses, his bro<strong>th</strong>er, Aaron, anda man named Hur went up on <strong>th</strong>e hill. Mosesraised his stick and started pray<strong>in</strong>g. Joshua ledhis men out to fight <strong>th</strong>e Amalekites. After awhile, Moses saw <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Isra</strong>e<strong>lite</strong>s werew<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>th</strong>e ba<strong>ttle</strong>. His arms were so tiredfrom hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>th</strong>e stick up <strong>th</strong>at he lowered hisarms. But <strong>th</strong>en <strong>th</strong>e Amalekites started w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<strong>th</strong>e ba<strong>ttle</strong>! So quickly Moses held <strong>th</strong>e stick upand <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Isra</strong>e<strong>lite</strong>s began w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>.As <strong>th</strong>e ba<strong>ttle</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued, Moses got more andmore tired of hold<strong>in</strong>g up his arms. Aaron and Hursaw how tired Moses was, so <strong>th</strong>ey he<strong>lp</strong>ed him sitdown on a rock. Then Aaron stood on one side ofMoses and Hur stood on <strong>th</strong>e o<strong>th</strong>er side. They heldup Moses’ arms for him.F<strong>in</strong>ally as <strong>th</strong>e sun was go<strong>in</strong>g down, <strong>th</strong>e last of <strong>th</strong>eAmalekites ran away. The <strong>Isra</strong>e<strong>lite</strong>s had won <strong>th</strong>eba<strong>ttle</strong>! Moses, Aaron and Hur dropped <strong>th</strong>eir arms.Moses built a special place to <strong>th</strong>ank God. Moseswanted everyone to remember how God hadanswered <strong>th</strong>eir prayers and he<strong>lp</strong>ed <strong>th</strong>em w<strong>in</strong><strong>th</strong>e ba<strong>ttle</strong>!© 2007 Gospel Light.
