The Futuring Committee will engage ina future exercise that will start to builda foundation for UIW visioning and ourplanning efforts for <strong>the</strong> decade.It will receive support from <strong>the</strong><strong>University</strong> Forecasting Committee, <strong>the</strong>Strategic Plan Goal Chair WorkingGroups and <strong>the</strong> Dean’s Council.


The plan is for <strong>the</strong>Futuring Committee to present itsinitial report at <strong>the</strong> UPC retreat inAugust 2011.


On March 25, 2011 –<strong>the</strong> 25 th anniversary <strong>of</strong> Lou’sinauguration as <strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong>president – he’ll deliver a“re-inauguration” speech where<strong>the</strong> 2015 plan will be presented to<strong>the</strong> community.


Before moving forward to2015/2020, let’s review <strong>the</strong> fivemain points from <strong>the</strong> president’sinauguration speech in 1986 thathave driven Vision during <strong>the</strong>last 25 years.


Raising <strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong>’s pr<strong>of</strong>ile by utilizing media:In 1986, <strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong> had a low public pr<strong>of</strong>ile. Itwas best-known for its location next to Earl Abel’s.This began changing through <strong>the</strong> extensive use <strong>of</strong>media trade exchange - print and broadcast - thatallowed <strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong> to advertise in English andSpanish in newspapers, billboards, TV and radiostations.These media efforts continue today, and have beenenhanced through additional venues such as <strong>the</strong>website, blogs and social media.


Increasing financial aid to students:This year, UIW will award more than$100 million in scholarships, grants,loans and work-study.Our demographics now reflect BexarCounty. Nearly 60 percent <strong>of</strong> our studentsare ei<strong>the</strong>r Hispanic or African American.


Enrollment:Enrollment had declined for years and haddipped to less than 1,300 by <strong>the</strong> mid-1980s.<strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> smallestprivate universities in Texas.And in a heavily Hispanic city, Hispanicstudents made-up only 32 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>enrollment.

EnrollmentHispanics comprise nearly 53 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>student enrollment in 2010. UIW has, by awide margin, <strong>the</strong> highest number <strong>of</strong> Hispanicstudents among <strong>the</strong> 40 private universities inTexas.We also have students from more than 60countries that make-up almost 14 percent <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> total enrollment.

EnrollmentUIW manages <strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong> High Schooland St. Anthony Catholic High School, whichhave a combined enrollment <strong>of</strong> nearly 1,000students.In 2010, UIW launched UIW Prep, an onlinecollege preparatory high school. It has anenrollment <strong>of</strong> approximately 200 students.


Improving/Increasing Programs:In 1986, <strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong> <strong>of</strong>fered 56 fields <strong>of</strong> studyat <strong>the</strong> undergraduate and master’s levels but nodoctoral-level programs.Today <strong>the</strong>re are nearly 80 fields <strong>of</strong> study at <strong>the</strong>undergraduate and graduate levels. These include aPh.D. in education, pr<strong>of</strong>essional doctoral degrees inpharmacy and optometry, and a new doctoralprogram in physical <strong>the</strong>rapy.


Improving/Increasing Programs:Since 2007, <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faculty hasincreased by more than 30 percent while <strong>the</strong>number <strong>of</strong> non-faculty employees hasincreased by 20 percent.Our plan is to add 28 new faculty positionsover <strong>the</strong> next four years.


Improving/Increasing Programs:Our delivery methods have also increased,thanks to ADCaP and <strong>the</strong> Virtual <strong>University</strong>.Our educational mission has expanded to includemultiple sites throughout San Antonio and alsosites in Corpus Christi, Guangzhou, China andMexico City, Mexico.


Facilities:In 1986, <strong>of</strong>fice and classroom space wasinadequate. For example, <strong>the</strong> library had 38,000square feet <strong>of</strong> space and was linked by onecomputer terminal to a single on-line databaseservice.Today, <strong>the</strong> library has more than 80,000 squarefeet <strong>of</strong> space. And <strong>the</strong>re are more than 100database search services available.Facilities have increased from 400,000 square feetin 1985 to over 2.2 million square feet in 2010.


Facilities:Factoid: Construction projects over <strong>the</strong>last 25 years have amounted to morethan $130 million in today’s dollars.


As with <strong>the</strong> goals from 1986, <strong>the</strong>2015 and 2020 plans will focus onseveral areas.


Expanding <strong>the</strong> Brand


These five universities have wellestablishedbrands inTexas and <strong>the</strong> USA.


Our goal is to expand <strong>the</strong> UIWbrand statewide, nationally andinternationally.


UIW BrandExpansion will occur through <strong>the</strong> following:1) Demographics -Face <strong>of</strong> Texas Today and Tomorrow2) Football3) Online programs – make <strong>the</strong>m much moreaccessible nationally and internationally4) Global campuses and sister schools

UIW BrandInternal Marketing Campaign:Don’t Hide Your Cardinal Pride!Through various mediums, <strong>the</strong> campus will beblanketed with messaging consistent andcomplimentary with our current ad campaignfeaturing The Degree.Goal is to encourage students and employeesto take pride in <strong>the</strong>ir association with UIW.

Succession PlanIn order to work toward <strong>the</strong> future, <strong>the</strong>President will meet with each member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Executive Team to determine how muchlonger <strong>the</strong>y plan to be at UIW.The expectation is that each Executive Teammember will <strong>the</strong>n work with his or herrespective deans and/or directors to see whatopportunities exist here for <strong>the</strong>m to grow.

Lou’s 25 th AnniversaryWe’ll celebrate Lou’s 25 thanniversary as president withspecial events throughout <strong>the</strong> year.


Lou’s 25 th AnniversaryFactoid 1: According to ICUT, Lou is currently <strong>the</strong>longest-serving president <strong>of</strong> a 4-year university inTexas (public or private).Factoid 2: According to <strong>the</strong> American Council onEducation (ACE), just 3.2% <strong>of</strong> college presidents in<strong>the</strong> USA have served at least 25 years.Factoid 3: According to ACE, only 0.6% <strong>of</strong> universitypresidents are under 40. Lou was 34 when he started at<strong>Incarnate</strong> <strong>Word</strong>.
