De-industrialisation, re-industrialisation, newindustrial policy: they all reveal the same concern for maintaining anindustrial base in our region, essential for our future growth. We knowFrance’s weak points: a lack of specialisation by sector, lagging exports, and tenuous ties with the world of research and higher education, whichin turn leads to a lack of innovation… all in a world economy whereincreasingly competitive products from South Korea, China and Brazil areattractive to European consumers. The Lyon region has been able to preserve its industrial base by playingthe specialisation card (life sciences and chemistry), facilitating linksbetween industry and research (from the creation of lnsavalor andEzus in the late 1980s to the business clusters based in the area) andpromoting the advantages of its location.Three recent examples demonstrate this industrial dynamism and weinvite you to find out about them in this issue of the newsletter. Aderlyhas supported the concretisation of these three projects in the Lyonregion, confirming that the death of industry predicted by the doomstersis not inevitable. Industry is a priority for both the new Lyon CCIchairman Philippe Grillot and Aderly. Lyon’s industrial dimension is a realcompetitive advantage in its competition with other European cities!Jacques de Chilly, Executive Director ADERLY

BUSINESS [STORY]The Lyon region stimulates industryThe Lyon region would look very different today if it had not benefitted from the presence anddevelopment of numerous industries. The industrial sector is an historic marker of the Lyon area, recognised for the diversity ofits business portfolio and business fabric, robust with its large number of small and mediumindustries, the establishment of large French and foreign groups and young companies in strongdevelopment.Although Lyon has asser ted itself in a number of scientific and technological sectors, the city remains an industrialcapital of the highest order in Europe. Even today, 44.4% of jobs are in industry and industrial servicescompared with 40.8% on average in France. This is a position it intends to strengthen to promote its advantages in this sector and anchor its developments,in par ticular in the food processing sector, but also that of the chemical industries for which Lyon presents realadvantages that set it apar t, as well as all the industries that can benefit from the region’s excellence in ecotechnologies. With a trained workforce and ability to serve the entire European market, the Lyon region is favourable tothe development of new industrial units. Fur thermore, Lyon is a city with a highly balanced economy anda very diverse offer : the sector-based as well as the regional and real estate offer, which extends to its well-servedsurrounding areas (Beaujolais, east of Lyon, airpor t, etc). Thus every project can be executed easily and find the conditions it needs to boom, benefitting from the proximity of a dynamic European city at the heart of the Europeanmarket. This is why, like Aderly and the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the city’s economic playersexpect in the coming years to strengthen support for industrial projects to which Lyoncould be home (see inset below).ZOOMThe CCI commits to industryWithin the framework of the company round table talks organised in 2011 by theLyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Philippe Grillot (Chairman of the LyonChamber of Commerce and Industry) has launched the 2011/2015 Roadmap, which presents the CCI’s five commitments and five priorities. One of these priorities is as follows: «Reassert the area’s industrialvocation». Thus the Lyon CCI, a major economic player in the area, is stronglycommitted to acting to consolidate the industrial base, the main source ofinnovation, expor t growth and development of service businesses. Its ambition is notably to expandindustrial SMEs internationally by increasing the exchange of experience, coordinating networks andfinancing the acceleration in growth with innovation and sustainable development as second nature, butabove all by developing an area equipped for industrial development.Consult the «Roadmap» at www.lyon.cci.fr[2]
