<strong>International</strong> Women’s <strong>Day</strong>Foreword by Lord MayorGerry BreenI am delighted to lend mysupport to the <strong>2011</strong> <strong>International</strong>Women’s <strong>Day</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>.<strong>International</strong> Women’s <strong>Day</strong>is currently celebrating itscentenary year and I commendthe Working Group set up bythe City Council in July 2007.Thanks to their dedicationand commitment <strong>International</strong>Women’s <strong>Day</strong> has now been formally embedded intothe annual calendar of the city.Lord Mayor Gerry Breen<strong>International</strong> Women’s <strong>Day</strong>, 8thMarch, is a global day of celebrationwhere women from all countr<strong>ie</strong>sand of different political, economic,social, linguistic and ethnicbackgrounds can join together toreflect on the struggle for equalityover the past century, celebrate theach<strong>ie</strong>vements to date and identifythe challenges for the future.In July 2007 the Members of<strong>Dublin</strong> City Council unanimously passed a motion agreeingto initiate a City Council programme of activit<strong>ie</strong>s eachyear to “promote women’s participation in the political,economic and social life of <strong>Dublin</strong> City”. An all-partysteering committee was established to develop an annualprogramme from 2008.This year’s impressive and exciting programme of eventsbuilds on the success of the previous three years.I would like to thank all those who have contributed to theextensive programme of events for <strong>2011</strong>, the Membersof the IWD Working Group, <strong>Dublin</strong> City Council stafffrom <strong>Dublin</strong> City Librar<strong>ie</strong>s, Community Development,
