parents, girls with associated problems, and grandparents of drug users’ children. Theprogramme focuses on solving drug-related problems and promoting safe leisure activities.Chapter 4The results of a study on drug users participating in harm reduction programmes, who areclassified as problem drug users according to the definition of problem drug use, show thatthere was a significant increase in the use of drugs other than heroin in 2011 compared tothe previous year. This is probably due to the decreased availability of heroin and its poorquality in 2011. The most commonly used drug was cannabis, followed by heroin, cocaineand synthetic drugs; the use of alcohol increased significantly in 2011. Most drug users usedsubstitute medicines, and more than half also used other medicines (hypnotics andbenzodiazepines). Most heroin or cocaine users use drugs intravenously. In comparison with2010, intravenous use of heroin decreased in 2011, while intravenous use of cocaine, heroinand cocaine combinations, and medications increased.Chapter 59According to the data collected using the Treatment Demand Indicator questionnaire 3,021people were treated in 17 centres for the prevention and treatment of drug addiction (CPTDA)and the Centre for Treatment of Drug Addiction at the Psychiatric Clinic Ljubljana in 2011;2,500 of them were in continuous maintenance treatment, and 521 people entered a treatmentprogramme again or for the first time in 2011. The average age of drug users who were retreatedor treated for the first time was 30.58 years, and most of them were male (78%).The data on drug users who were admitted into a programme again or for the first time showthat, in most cases, heroin was the reason why users sought help in 2011. The proportion ofdrug users who sought help due to heroin decreased compared to previous years, and theproportion of those who sought help due to cannabis increased. In 2011, cocaine was themost common secondary drug, followed by alcohol, cannabis and hypnotics. More than halfof drug users used their main drug heroin every day; injection remained the most commonroute of administration in 2011. However, it is interesting that a large proportion of heroinusers smoked heroin. Two thirds of drug users who entered a programme again or for thefirst time were unemployed, and there was an increase in the unemployment rate amongdrug users compared to previous years. As regards education levels, most drug users hadcompleted secondary education.
