As <strong>the</strong> first hospice in Arizona, <strong>Carondelet</strong>has been <strong>the</strong> leader in providing hospiceand palliative care throughout Sou<strong>the</strong>rnArizona since 1977 with a tradition ofserving our community with compassion,comfort and care.<strong>Carondelet</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong> & Palliative CareTeam is multi-disciplinary and includesvolunteers.<strong>Hospice</strong> seeks to provide a community ofcare for both patients and <strong>the</strong>ir lovedones.The presence and contribution of volunteersas a core part of <strong>the</strong> team distinguisheshospice care from o<strong>the</strong>r healthcare services.Who are hospice volunteers?<strong>Hospice</strong> volunteers are people from ourcommunity; men and women, young andold, college students and retirees, fromall walks of life. They do share a commonbond– an unselfish desire to give of<strong>the</strong>ir time to improve <strong>the</strong> end-of-life experiencesof individuals and <strong>the</strong>ir lovedones dealing with a life-limiting illness.No medical training or medical backgroundis necessary, nor is any priorexperience with hospice.What do hospice volunteers do?Our hospice volunteers spend time withpatients and <strong>the</strong>ir loved ones. They providecaregiver relief, companionship, runerrands, and provide supportive services.They work alongside paid staff in everyarea including home care, inpatient, bereavement,spiritual support and administration.11th Hour ProgramA specially trained group of hospice volunteers,called 11th Hour Vigil <strong>Volunteer</strong>s,sit with patients and <strong>the</strong>ir families during<strong>the</strong> last hours of life to ensure that no oneneeds to die alone.<strong>Hospice</strong> <strong>Volunteer</strong> Training<strong>Volunteer</strong>s complete a 30-hour certifiedtraining program. The training covers variousaspects of hospice care including: anexploration of end-of-life issues, <strong>the</strong> dyingprocess, grief and loss, communication,spirituality, psychosocial issues, symptomcontrol, physical care of <strong>the</strong> dying, andself care. Our volunteers additionallycomplete 16 hours of training in our inpatientunit where, under supervision, <strong>the</strong>yput to use <strong>the</strong> skills learned in <strong>the</strong> classroom.Call 205-7567 for moreinformation.
