Light Cure AdhesiveTechnologyIssue 1

Light Cure Adhesives for PlasticsPlastic bonding adhesives can be curedby UV and visible light and achieve lowstress, ultra clear bonds, making themparticularly suitable for bonding modern plastics.• Transparency equal to the plastic substrate obtains invisible bond lines• Temperature resistance and deformation behaviour match that of plastics, providingfor a high degree of long-term durability• Capable of bonding transparent plastics, e.g. PC, acrylic, PBT, PVC and plasticised PVC,most opaque plastics, e.g. PA, as well as most non-transparent or coloured plastics• Various light cure technologies for adaptation to the wavelengths passing through clearor UV-stabilised or translucent pigmented plasticsApplications• Bonding and sealing of housing assemblies, lids, shells, windows into frames, sunglasses …• Display cases and shelves, point of sale material …• Medical device industry – needles, housings, adapters, connectors …8

Light Cure Adhesives for Non Transparent SubstratesA large number of substrates are not transparent to light at all becausethey are made of a material that does not allow light to transmit (e.g. metals, ceramics, ferrites), or because they contain a non transparent additive(e.g. black, colour additives). The versatility of light curable adhesives for use in bonding and tacking, pottingand encapsulating, coating and sealing applications is further enhanced by products whichhave a secondary cure mechanism to ensure residual or complete cure in shadowed areas notreached by UV or visible light. For such joint confi gurations, light cure adhesives are availablewith secondary cure capability. This secondary curing options include heat, moisture, activator oras anaerobic cure.Light cure adhesives offer benefits even whennon transparent substrates are involved:• Precise positional fi xturing of parts to be bonded• Fast cure for high processing speeds and in-line quality control capability• Reliable cure of exposed excess adhesive fi llets or squeeze-out• Cure in shadowed areas over time by secondary cure10

ApplicationsWherever fast cure of adhesive in fi llets accessible by light offers a process benefi t, e.g. for• Fast fi xturing of magnets, ferrites, ceramic parts …• Fast positioning of parts in retaining joints …• Fillet or surface cure, e.g. of post-applied product outside the bond area …ProductAdhesiveTechnologyViscosity[mPa.s]ColourFixtureTime [s](@ 6mW/cm²@ 365 nm)Suitable forGlass Plastic Metal CeramicLoctite ® 352 Acrylic 15000 transparent, amber 10 b n b bLoctite ® 366 Anaerobic 7500 transparent, amber 15 n b bLoctite ® 385 Acrylic 4000 transparent, amber 15 b b bLoctite ® 661 Anaerobic 500 transparent, yellow 12 b bLoctite ® 3526 Acrylic 17500 transparent, amber 5 b b b bLoctite ® 3851 Anaerobic 5000 transparent, pale yellow 12 b b bLoctite ® 3920 Acrylic 10000 translucent, amber 12 n b bLoctite ® 4304* Cyanoacrylate 20 transparent, pale green 2 b n nLoctite ® 4305* Cyanoacrylate 900 transparent, pale green 2 b n nLoctite ® 5083 Silicone paste translucent, colourless >30 b n b bLoctite ® 5088 Silicone 65000 translucent, straw coloured >30 b n b bLoctite ® 5091 Silicone 5000 translucent, slightly milky >30 b n b bLoctite ® 128157 Anaerobic 15 pale green >30 b b*ISO 10993 certifi ed or USP Class VI approved. Equipment for Light CuringFour major factors must be taken into consideration when designing a successful light cure application: emission spectrumof the cure system, light intensity, transmission properties of substrate, and the required cure characteristics. As amanufacturer of both the chemistry and the curing equipment, Henkel knows how to match light cure adhesives to thecorrect dispensing and curing system.Flood Cure Systems1000 WLoctite ® 97055 / 97056Loctite ® 97055 high intensity light cure chamber system for manual loading.Loctite ® 97056 tunnel version designed for integration into automated lines.Different bulbs are available for appropriate emission spectrums.Bulb UV UV / Visible INDIGOLoctite ® 97346Loctite ® 97347Loctite ® 97348= Medium intensity= High intensity= Very high intensity400 WLoctite ® 97039 / 97063Medium intensity manual workstation for batch manufacturing processes.Loctite ® 97063 free of any UV light emittance, especially designed forINDIGO light curing grades.Cure System UV UV / Visible INDIGOLoctite ® 97039Loctite ® 97063 –= Medium intensity= High intensity= Very high intensity1000 WEnergy consumption of bulbLEDLED systemEmission spectrum contains UV lightEmission spectrum containsUV / Visible lightEmission spectrum containsvisible INDIGO lightExposure timerInterface for PLC connection,e.g. external startInternal intensity monitoringSpot cure systemFlood cure system12
